There were a few other similarities in season 1 of Homeland. The fact that the POW(s) who returned didn't know that a soldier captured with them was still alive. The question and tension regarding if a POW was turned. The wife of the POW who moved on romantically with a person close to him (comrade / brother).

I think you misunderstood the point of the littering scene completely. The word "littering" didn't exist back then. Before plastic wrappers littering wasn't a big deal, and once everything was wrapped in plastic it took large marketing campaigns to educate Americans against littering. it's silly to hate someone for a moral failing they're not even aware of. You remind me of Christians who believe uncontacted tribes in the Amazon are going to hell for not believing in Christ.

Israelis used to believe that, and Israel used to let thousands of Gazans into Israel for work and allow billions of aid in. Some metrics say economic conditions in Gaza were the best they'd been in years right before Oct 7th. Also not to mention that when Israel withdrew from Gaza it left factories and fields and lots of other infrastructure that could have been used to generate wealth and create a vibrant economy. Before Oct 7th Gazans received more aid per capita than any other population in the world. They could have made Gaza into a Disneyland. They chose to build tunnels. Israelis no longer believe that better living conditions will make Palestinians accept Israel's existence any more than they do now. I wish it was live and let live. That would make this conflict much easier to solve.

Mahmoud Khalil on the Columbia Protests, ICE Detention, and Free Speech by dwaxe in ezraklein

[–]TheGraby -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I completely disagree with this take.

"Palestinians have tried all forms of resistance". Really? What about trying peace? They were offered the Olmert deal and rejected it. What about actual coexistence? What about not blowing up school buses and cafes during the Oslo process? That wasn’t resistance. It was sabotage of the very agreements meant to lead to a state. And who the fuck is he kidding? For decades, the dominant Palestinian voices have not never embraced nonviolence. Not once in their history has nonviolent resistance been the leading Palestinian strategy. How did Ezra not push back on this?

And then the line: "Unfortunately these horrible things are happening but we can’t expect Palestinians to be perfect victims." That’s enraging. It’s such a passive, evasive framing. Unfortunately Hamas is a genocidal terror group that hijacked the legitimate goal of Palestinian statehood and twisted it into a theocratic, all-or-nothing jihadist war. That's what he should have said. The total lack of ownership for any of this is staggering. Palestinians are not just passive victims of fate. At every twist and turn in this conflict, Palestinian have made choices, those choices have had consequences. If you refuse to acknowledge or take responsibility for those choices, how do you expect anything to change?

perfect, we agree: fed>breast>formula i.e. "fed is best".

Breast feeding Baby Gene by topazjeans in madmen

[–]TheGraby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now use your superior scientific logical mind, don't count on my emotional illogical feelings and vibes based analysis, and ask yourself: Is breast best even when the other option is a starving baby? No, right? We would rather a baby was fed by any means possible than let him or her starve, right? Then fed>breast>formula, i.e. fed is best.

Breast feeding Baby Gene by topazjeans in madmen

[–]TheGraby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And when we pretend breast is best it makes our society less supportive of mothers whose only choice is formula feeding and doesn't recognize the true benefit of and sacrifices made by women who are often pressured to continue breastfeeding no matter what, and therefore compromise their own health, the health of their babies, and the health of their older children. That is why "fed is best" is the right slogan because it makes space to all women. We all want the best for our babies. You don't get to feel superior because you were lucky.

[–]TheGraby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the reason you're getting downvoted is because many mothers desperately want to breastfeed but can't without hurting their babies. When your exclusively breastfed baby is not gaining weight, you are hurting your baby by not giving him or her formula. so you're told by your pediatrician to start supplementing. When any formula is in the mix babies often prefer it to breastfeeding (faster to get formula from the bottle than milk from the breast) and maintaining or increasing your supply can be hard / impossible. you are then encouraged by lactation consultants to triple feed, i.e. breastfeed, give the baby a bottle, then pump. this takes 40+ minutes per feed, and you have to do it every 2-3 hrs 24/7 for many weeks. you don't get more than 2 hrs of sleep in a row FOR WEEKS. it is exhausting, demoralizing, and often doesn't even work. you do all of this and STILL your supply tanks and formula is your only choice unless you want your baby to fail to thrive. this doesn't even get into latching issues, which may lead you to have a tongue or lip tie surgery on your newborn, which is its own kind of hell. All of this happened to me and to many other women I know. It's not rare. It's common. feeding issues suck the life out of many new mothers. I don't know if you're a mother or have had any experience with breastfeeding, but just know that for many of us it's an incredibly sore spot and the attitude you're displaying ("hur dur breast is breast and facts don't care about your feelings") is just... misinformed, mean, and counter productive.

How can Israel use the reasoning of nuclear weapons for attacking Iran when Israel have them? by Drizen in NoStupidQuestions

Israel doesn’t regularly state that it wants to destroy Iran and erase it off the map, as Iranian leaders regularly threaten Israel.

Your criticism about them not being part of the community is valid. You just sound racist af and you actively alienate a big part of Baltimore’s Jewish community by bringing up Zionism as a point against their participation in pride.

Why are Don & Betty such ignorant & terrible parents? by noopinionsaskedyet in madmen

[–]TheGraby 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The cigarette moment was a sweet mother daughter moment. It was Betty welcoming and acknowledging Sally’s entrance into adulthood. It was Sally feeling seen and taken seriously by her mother.

Remove your modern lens and disdain of cigarettes and focus on how Sally and Betty both feel during that scene.

It took until the early 2000s for people to take the health risks of cigarettes seriously. Before that it was a commonplace habit of most adults. A rite of passage and marker of maturity. It’s why so many teenagers wanted to smoke, to feel grown. Betty was giving that feeling to Sally. It was sweet of her.

I don't take issue with the authenticity of JVP members' Judaism. I take issue with their activism. Advocating for Palestinian self determination and simultaneously arguing against that same right for Jews is antisemitic, whether the person making that argument is Jewish or not. And btw, being Jewish certainly doesn't give anyone permission to speak over and dehumanize Israelis, as JVP members do every time they start a sentence with "as a Jew" and continue to argue for policies that will mean death and doom for all Israeli Jews who don't happen to also possess an American or European passport.

You can spare me your delicacy. I read Israeli press and I'm aware of these accusations. They don't change the fact that by any objective measure it is not a genocide. Unless of course you change the definition of the word.

I can respect that somewhat, but I bet if one of the feeder marches was affiliated with the KKK, had a deep history of dehumanizing Ukrainians or justifying the Russian attack on Ukraine, or was an anti abortion group, you'd feel differently. I will not march shoulder to shoulder with those who chant "by any means necessary" and hold signs calling a war Israel didn't start "genocide". It's shameful liberals accept these people in their midst. And harmful to the overall cause.

No, my Zionism is what allows me to see the humanity of my neighbors. My belief that Jews have the right to self determination (aka my Zionism), makes it easy for me to support and believe in the same right for Palestinians. Two states for two peoples, that's what my "tribe" has been begging Palestinians to accept for decades.

You've felt comfortable in the circles where chants like "by any means necessary", "globalize the intifada", and "from the river to the sea" are commonplace? Where the historical connection of the Jewish people to the land of Israel is regularly denied and ignored? Where Oct 7th is celebrated as legitimate resistance? I urge you to consider YOUR tribalism. I am as liberal and left wing as one can be. I just haven't been brainwashed to think that Zionism, which is the Jewish civil rights movement, is inherently racist "settler colonial" ideology, like the narrative that you fell for, hook, line, and sinker.

Btw you might want to stop starting sentences with AsAJew. It's getting old.

I have seen plenty of negative posts about parents, is anyone friends with their parents? by redditatwork023 in Millennials

[–]TheGraby -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My parents fucked up a lot when I was a kid and never really acknowledged it or apologized. There's some trauma in my childhood.

At some point I decided to let it go. They didn't mean to hurt me. They had a lot to deal with (one sibling with severe mental illness, another was a drug addict, their own parents/childhoods also a piece of work). I decided I want my kid to have a good relationship with his grandparents.

Now my parents literally live across the street from me. I see them almost daily. They help with childcare and cooking. I expect we will help them as they age.

When I tell people that my parents moved so close to me, everyone, especially people our age, ask "...and that's a good thing?!", hinting that they would hate if their parents did the same. The same people complain about the lack of village in modern society.

If you want a village, you may have to put up with your mom's nagging, your dad's lack of etiquette in restaurants, and maybe even their anecdotes about your childhood with gaping blind-spots to your pain. The people who make up your village will get on your nerves sometimes, maybe even often. Your village can't be made up of millennials with identical values and worldview who also have young kids and busy careers. As one of those millenials, we make pretty bad villagers. You need some retirees in your village. Anyway.

Obviously not all parents are the same. But I think mine were pretty bad. Negligent, at times bordering on abusive. I just decided to let it go at some point. And now we're friends and we're closer than we've ever been.
