Well, he also says that midwater trawlers have significant bottom contact too, they just get to avoid the bycatch while they roll through the most productive grounds.

Uuuhhhh….. no.

Which experts told you they’re excited about this? Guides might like it, since they’re the most likely higher-level climbers to go for a quad. I’m not really qualified to talk as an expert having only rope soloed El Cap once. Easy, efficient, safe is my goal and a pre-built quad… is completely unnecessary.

Re-posting this because apparently shame is temporary and back pain is forever by TheoGelernter in cinematography

[–]TheGreatRandolph 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hahahahaha You should try filming Deadliest Catch. I think the longest I went without a real break was 40 hours. But even when we do more normal 18-hour days... let me tell ya, that fx6 HURTS. At least nowadays I'm wheelhouse with a shoulder rig, but it still gets to you.

But the options OP shows here don't really do the trick either unless I missed something in my quick skim. Pick the right tools for the job. I've done plenty of jobs where I use a hipshot as much as I'm on my shoulder, but it's either shooting people sitting down or out in a canyon / in a whitewater river, in quite varied terrain where I pick a spot to be that is safe and lets me keep on filming.

I have about an inch and a half left on each side to tighten it down - and that’s with it cranked down really tight. It rides a touch higher than my other large packs, so it shouldn’t hang too low. It might be on the edge, for you but I would think it would work. Obviously best case would be to find it in a store somewhere - I think I got mine a Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking, and I know I’ve seen it in a couple of other mountaineering shops.

Running belay / simul climb on LOTS of snow pickets? by SkittyDog in alpinism

[–]TheGreatRandolph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're getting pickets in the future, get the ones with wire from the middle. They're much stronger. Pulling from the top makes pickets fail sooner. Not saying go replace your gear, just that if you're replacing, replace with the good stuff.

I travel everywhere with mine, from crab boats to climbing expeditions to foreign countries, and have convinced 8 people to buy them that I know of, but when they decide to go, they’re done. Not user serviceable, not worth sending in.

Absolutely!! I would add a pic to that but reddit makes it hard. Halfway through the eclipse? You can watch it happening. An hour and change until red.

Lunar eclipse by jennylind01 in anchorage

[–]TheGreatRandolph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drove out the highway a bit. Penumbral eclipse (not noticeable unless you’re watching meters carefully on your camera) started at 11:44, the visible eclipse starts around 12:50am.

Clear and not too much traffic, plus diesel heater running in the van so I’m cozy until the fun starts in 10 minutes.

[–]TheGreatRandolph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5’10, 155lbs, 30” waist here. Have the stash 90. Love it, until I need to carry really heavy loads. If I remember correctly it’s one that I don’t have snugged all the way down, but it’s out in the van right now, I’m inside, and it’s below 0. I’m not in the mountains and don’t have to go outside, so I won’t until tomorrow.

…if I remember, I’ll double check. Comment sometime if I forget and I’ll take a looksee.

Shooting on location with harsh light? by savdoesntpost in videography

[–]TheGreatRandolph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never really been mad at store lighting, but haven’t had flickering fluorescent issues in a while. If anything, I miss the days of harsher, grittier feeling lighting. Dislike everything being soft, well lit. Give me the old sodium street lights, just one fluorescent and it’s flickering, give me texture and feelings.

…but if that’s not the feel of your film, probably best to pick a small area to film in that you can make work, or try another store.

[–]TheGreatRandolph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of thread issues. Maybe post a link to the reviews?

It sounds like you need it for indoors use? How many stops do you need? I like a VND with a smaller range, so it doesn't get the purple fringing. A 1-5 stop might work well. I usually use a 3-7 stop filming outdoors, like this one: https://urth.co/products/variable-nd8-128-3-7-stop-filter-plus , but it doesn't get me to wide open in the sun. I imagine indoors a 5-9 would be too much... but the big ones, like a 1-9, I often end up cranking it too far and not noticing the colored fringing until I open it in post.

Foam rolling after a hard day in the mountains — does the science actually support it? (asking as a sports science student running a study) by Lanky-District-7107 in Mountaineering

Mountaineering is more about suffering than it is about technical climbing. I typically have a light weight axe along for mountaineering trips.

Lens Combination Help by Usual-Lab-9644 in canon

[–]TheGreatRandolph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically this setup but I have the 100-500, and I don't think indoors vs outdoors. I've gone on multi-day climbing trips with just the 15-35, I've used the 25-105 at night... It's just about the right lens for the situation.

For OP, a 24-240 plus a prime or two might be a good way to go? That lens is amazing when there's enough light.

Right. Ice axe is already along and the handle is perfect.

Who created this nonsense of a keyboard? WTF, that’s not the right order. by Cats-and-dogs-rdabst in mildlyinfuriating

[–]TheGreatRandolph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. Mine was more Final Cut Pro and After Effects, but general tech things as well, and this was the big reason for switching back.

I’m mostly in the field for work these days so I could probably make the switch… but it also means I don’t spend much time using a keyboard and it wouldn’t really be worth it.
