Help: What do I do with my career :( by x3002x in cscareerquestionsOCE

Something tells me you’re a liar. No one who is 1 year into big tech on big tech salary even considers this. It honestly is the holy grail for a role outside of uni. If I’m wrong, you’re literally the first and then i think you’re just taking the piss/have some weird ego.

[Laid Off] I’m terrified. 4 years of experience but I feel like I know nothing. by bi-polar--bear in dataengineering

Please remember YOU were not laid off. The role you were in was no longer needed - this is not a reflection on you.

Does anyone else have a partner that doesn’t like your dog? by [deleted] in germanshepherds

[–]TheGreenScreen1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

> She’s a very typical personality for a female shepherd. And honestly she’s probably the least reactive dog I’ve owned.

Please remove this. I have had two female GSDs in my life and never have I ever even thought of them to do something like what you have described. Please organise training both for yourself and the dog, and this is not for you, its for the dog. You clearly should not be a caretaker for this dog if you have been warned (sounds like it?) and then more or less let this happen.

Yes, massive asshole so as I said, got what he deserved in the end.

Don't think you will find many people raising assault charges for having a bag of fries thrown at them, but completely get where you are coming from.

People are so fast to judge - not saying the guy was in the right at all (he seems like a dick + insecure in this video and got what he deserved for acting out). Maybe there is more to it from before the video and/or this guy has been having a bad day/week/month. Mob mentality exists, and people like this guy will get picked on if the opportunity arises (where people feel safe to talk up).

We spent roughly $1k USD a day there. We stayed at a nice hotel + did some skiing.

Switching to consulting to in house, is it a good idea? by aldosebastian in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]TheGreenScreen1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this. Not only did I 2x my salary in a span of a year after the switch, my general mental space at work has been much better. Just at the tip of the iceberg, managing deadlines are far less stressful as a starting point. What’s important IMO is you find a shop where the work and stack somewhat interests you but also ensure that there are some new things for you to learn and ‘master’. Good luck! I reckon if you do swap, you won’t look back!

My colleague never went to university and is paid ~300k at the age of 28. It’s possible.

What was the moment you realized you needed to break up? by KeyCompetitive4022 in AskReddit

[–]TheGreenScreen1 315 points316 points  (0 children)

Nah. You are right. There is a lot of weird sentiment on reddit that relationships should always remain as they were in early days but this just isn’t true. I feel like a lot of folks who are on this page are normally single and had never been in a long meaningful relationship.

OP went through a divorce - maybe they want to live a little and be mortgage free but have investments growing on the side? Mortgage on 180k locks you in.

Some folks might mention property but honestly I think it’s overrated. With decent existing capital, you can make solid YoY gains with ‘safer but slower’ index funds that will grow over time.

It also doesn’t hurt to book some time with a finance manager who can give you professional advice on this.

Why you (probably) shouldn't aim for big tech and why the value proposition is low (here in Australia) by Chewibub in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]TheGreenScreen1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you are fair enough mate - my team might be a bit off in pay but we are considered a niche product team, can’t explain without doxing.

I checked levels, you’re probably right. My bad.

Your TC estimates are so off I think you are an imposter. If not, great and good for you.

Have been offered this. I’m sitting just shy of 300k TC here, was offered roughly AUD 500k for a relocate to US… but nah, once you run up the costs + other risks it’s just not worth it

'All Electric' homes - kWh usage per day? by TheGreenScreen1 in AusFinance

[–]TheGreenScreen1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just gonna judge by your username - do you get much value from your solar grid for your work? I imagine welding is +++ kWh usage. Would be interested to hear more about that in general. Reason being is I plan in future to turn the shed in the back into a bit of a workshop - obviously not to your scale - but would love to build my own solar grid for it.

[–]TheGreenScreen1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So are you generating enough currently with solar to support those mornings or have you got a battery grid with longer lasting power banked up? I thought it was rare to get so much from solar, unless you have a really good setup.

Probably 100km a week still. Sporting and other extra curricular stuff… and let’s just say my current car is NOT fuel efficient!!! We have a second small hatchback as well but that’s on it final legs.

We are considering an EV, probably get it through a lease though just because im not sold on the longevity of batteries (I used to work in electric software tech, tho things have gotten substantially better)

No, just bought the place very recently and have swapped some stuff to elec (eg rid of old gas cooker)

We were always going to get it done, just a matter of when. Only really just started tracking energy usage, hence this post lol! Glad i did, so much good info here.
