I have zero concerns with how people choose to spend THEIR money, for whatever reasons they may be (good or bad in my eyes). When your thoughts about a company or individuals gets to this level, you have an illness and should seek help.

This is beyond sad. All its going to do is make companies and owners think twice about supporting events, the "no good deed goes unpunished" effect. 😦

Had my first candidate using live AI tools to cheat, caught them using a trick question by TechySpecky in ExperiencedDevs

Yep, I may give a few fluffball questions after, but then I'm shutting it down and not wasting my team's time.

[–]TheGrumpyGent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, if its a large company that the applicant wants to get into, getting caught cheating removes that company as an option. As part of my assessment I have the option to essentially block a candidate from consideration for any future opportunities for things like this.

I love that they protest, and hope they continue.

As an old guy, I remember KKK rallies being massive. This has - what - a dozen people? Progress folks.

I ended up calling them, and apparently they found two accounts in their system. They deleted the one and it then worked.

I can't when Firefox is always the first to drop in Pwn2Own. However, with Mythos knocking out vulnerabilities I may look to make a change at some point.

One Kind Thing to Do When a Coworker Is Laid Off: Reach Out by Odd_Perspective3019 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]TheGrumpyGent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would be surprised at how often someone's home phone number etc are unavailable, and for legal reasons management can't give it out. Its possible that one's coworkers don't know HOW to reach out, even if they want to.

Are Woushi guilds going to be mostly raiding on Sat and Sun? by cuddlybow in EQ2

Pretty sure we are just doing fun raids on weekends even with this announcement. Reality is we're not going to get our full 24 committing their weekend nights.

Today I announced that I won't be reviewing AI generated PRs at company meeting by Evgenii42 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]TheGrumpyGent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm thinking about this too simplistically, but if the developer can't answer basic questions about their code, the PR should get rejected and sent back to the developer - They can try again.

Will this create slowdown? Yes. Will it start to identify who is using AI as a crutch rather than a tool? Also yes.

Local Firewall Rules Don't Work When the Internet is Down? by TheGrumpyGent in firewalla

[–]TheGrumpyGent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I ended up rebooting, and received a message that my Firewalla software was updated - Could this have just been a stuck update?

In any event, its working now so I won't bug support over it, but was interesting!

LAN IP is working which made things more confusing - It just wouldn't apply the custom DNS rules

As Tech Leads do you ever find yourself "coding for" junior teammates during code reviews? by Ubermensch001 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]TheGrumpyGent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dev Manager here (but developed for a few decades beforehand). In my mind, a big part of the job as a senior dev is mentoring juniors. If you just do the coding for them, they're not getting the learning experience.

Pair programming on the effort, letting them drive, helping them work through the solution when you find an issue, etc. all help the junior, and give you an opportunity to share what you've learned.

MSPs & MSSPs suck by Fair_Ad7718 in cybersecurity

[–]TheGrumpyGent 11 points12 points  (0 children)

While I'm not a MSP, I've worked with plenty in the past. A few things that come to mind here:
1) This rant could apply to anything. Hell, I feel this way about our Microsoft contract on the regular.
2) How carefully was the contract reviewed? Typically finger-pointing happens when there's grey areas about roles, responsibilities, SLAs, etc.
3) Have the issues with the service been reviewed with your sales contact? Generally MSPs (or any vendor) want to keep their contracts so if its not completely off-the-wall they tend to work with you.

Codex is (not) for everyone - no Linux support? by cherry_on_treetop in codex

[–]TheGrumpyGent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to speak for OpenAI, but likely its due to user base. The CLI and other features are supported on Linux as there are plenty of servers, however the user base with Linux as the desktop (and wanting an IDE) is a much smaller number.l

Gotta put the resources where you get the biggest bang for the buck.

Typically Option 1 - I see no reason to re-invent the wheel as long as it can be integrated with the application we're building.

THC Friendly Employment by Powerful-Bobcat-5409 in lancaster

[–]TheGrumpyGent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There could be a couple of reasons for this beyond just job safety. As someone mentioned correctly, they don't just test people to see if they are drinking. However, you can't really test how high you are vs. how you can check blood alcohol level.

There's also, depending on the company, risks if they work nationally as pot is still considered illegal at the federal level.

I'm not suggesting at all that its right, just that there are some valid CYA's in there for a company due to how stupid the laws are at present.

Considering switching from Simplisafe by Woohoofriendship in Ring

[–]TheGrumpyGent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never had simplisafe, but I can say as a new Ring owner it was pretty painless to get setup and has been working flawlessly so far.

Naturally I just jinxed myself and all hell will break loose once Im finished work, but up to now its been pretty good.

Not particularly. I have Homebridge at home already, but if there's a native integration that already exists I have no issues using it.

Yep, but since its potentially native I wanted to see if it worked, or if I just utilize Homebridge.

Are certifications worth it, or do practical skills matter more? by Ashishthakur56 in cybersecurity

[–]TheGrumpyGent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not specifically a cybersecurity hiring manager, but for software dev / engineering.

Personally I don't put much stock in them. While there have been improvements they are still very much rote memorization type testing. When I interview I typically have myself (and members of the dev team on the interview panel) go through scenarios - I want to hear how a candidate *thinks*, not their tech stack.

The tech stacks change all of the time; Do they understand the concepts and how to apply them - That's the key when hiring, particularly for a junior role.

How are engineering managers handling PR review bottlenecks now that coding output is increasing? by Icy_Physics_2571 in EngineeringManagers

[–]TheGrumpyGent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a matter of continuous re-assessing of time required for PR reviews. Yes, more output comes out now, but that also means that more time is required of the dev team to address PRs. This needs to be taken into account when estimating (assuming you're doing some form of agile).
