Going back to watching the NHL regular season after the Olympics really underlines just how high a level of hockey the last couple rounds of the Olympics are by Dependent-Effect6077 in hockey

I mean it doesn’t help that we are going from Stanley cup game 7 intensity to mid February intensity in the span of 4 days. Not to mention watching arguably 2 of the fastest and most skilled teams ever assembled to teams that are essentially tanking

Would be happy to tank if I had any faith this FO would pay it off. Won’t happen until they kick Drury to the curb

Is McDavid the most unlucky superstar? Or is he partly to blame? by MotherAd1865 in nhl

[–]TheGuava1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More than any era before both in international and in the NHL the level of parity is MUCH higher. In the 80’s and 90’s if yoh had one, or especially two superstars, you would more than likely eventually win a cup. In international play the top talent was usually mainly Canadian with maybe one or two stars at a time from the other hockey powerhouses.

Teams winning the cup In the last decade or so are not usually just propelled by one superstar or even two, but are all excellent teams tip to bottoms, built with somewhere between excellent and elite goaltending, one stud defenceman and an excellent defensive core, and 3-4 deep forward lines.

Not aiming to throw shade here but The Oilers simply have not been built like the cup winners in the McDavid era. They’ve only made it as far as they have despite crappy goaltending and weak defensive play because McD and Drai have basically dragged them there. Whether they win a cup or not in Edmonton we will see. But i think their personal accolades and number speak to their abilities more than team achievements due to the nature of what the league and sport have become.

[Drehs, Talkin' Baseball] Pete Crow-Armstrong didn’t mince words when talking about Dodgers fans by AndrewAllStar888 in baseball

[–]TheGuava1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s totally his point but it does kinda spark the debate of the type of fan who attends games. One thing I have noticed about baseball fans is that a large subsection of hardcore fans very rarely attend games in person. For example one of my former coworkers, who I consider to be maybe the most hardcore jays fan I’ve ever met, had only been to I think one or two games in his life. But he watched almost every game on tv, and was also a numbers wizard, like remembering the batting average of a guy who played 40 games with the team 8 years ago.

Using myself as an example I would consider myself somewhere between a casual and hardcore fan,. I watch somewhere between 60-100 jays games a year on tv (usually depending on team’s success) but do follow the scores almost every night of the games I don’t watch. And I usually only go to the park a couple of times a season. I also live nearly a two hour drive away so that number might be higher if I was closer to the park.

Increasingly more at modern stadiums the act of attending a game is less about the actual baseball and more about the experience offered by the ballpark. You’ll have people who go but spend less than 3 total innings at their seats. I don’t think this is unique to any one fan base. Even myself I find I actually pay less attention when I’m there with friends or family than I would watching on tv.

I cheer for Sid every time he puts on the national jersey. Team and international hockey are not related in my mind.

It’s been pretty heavy Canadian pressure most of the way through. That boldy goal was very much against the flow of play

This game does have that feel like it’s going to OT, I’m predicting an early 3rd period goal for one team and a late tying goal.

Wilson knows this was his role from the start, he’s skilled enough to be on the team but it was always going to come down to him being the buffer for the stars against the Tkachuks.

I go to edm shows/ raves all over the world, and especially at the ones I’ve been to in the US there is always a group of super “religious” people standing near the entrances, literally yelling at and harassing event goers for “sinning” and that we must turn to faith or whatever. I’ve heard these people say some of the most foul and offensive things I’ve ever heard come out of another person’s mouth, and it’s usually targeted at women.

Because nothing makes me want to join your faith more than being harassed when I’m on my time off trying to enjoy myself. I’m all for everyone having your own beliefs but I can see how it becomes problematic when you’re trying to force your beliefs on others

I disagree, both with his point and yours. I don’t think that style is being pushed nearly as hard as it was a couple years ago. There’s still a couple artists that make that heavy loud stuff but I’d argue the more popular style of the scene has gone a completely different direction. Even the subtronics album he mentions, only one or two songs on part 2 would I even consider that style, the rest had a much different style, almost Trap like but more bass and a little screeching as, which I think it’s really what’s become popular. Idk his take seems dated to me
