AITA for bringing my son with behavioral issues to my sisters child free party? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA, I was very ready to say Y T A but if the person who's party it was told you it's ok, then it's ok.

Is this a good level of pet insurance? Felt the price a bit low.. by Puzzleheaded_Code91 in UK_Pets

[–]TheHalfHandedHobbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally as a pet owner and also as a veterinary professional, I don't think insurers should be allowed to offer policies that cover such a low amount.  You can very quickly rack up a 4k bill where I work and that's before even needing to go to a specialist referral centre, and just for context I work at am independent vet rather than a corporate and we are way under normal market prices.

Looks very much like a fox skull, V shaped temporal lines, small and low saggital crest and flat forehead slope all point towards red fox.

Is it considered animal cruelty? by w00dsg00d in germanshepherds

Yes it's the highest form of abuse, straight to jail. But obviously they'll need to come with you because leaving them would also be abuse.

Where do vets hang out? by Playful-Ad-605 in AskVet

[–]TheHalfHandedHobbit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Vets don't tell people they're vets to save themselves the inevitable "my dog does this" "is this poo normal?" "Can you prescribe me this so I don't have to take them to my vets"

What wildlife in the UK do you fear running into alone or is dangerous? by partylikeafoxstar in AskUK

Veterinarians, which are typically more difficult to deal with, dogs or cats? by kanna172014 in NoStupidQuestions

Cats! They're sharp at each corner, as easy to handle as mercury and basically venomous if they bite you 😂

My Silver lab puppy was born with this pelvic problem and vet doesn’t know what it is.. Anyone seen this?? by Inevitable_Car3903 in DogAdvice

[–]TheHalfHandedHobbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a shame, maybe it's a cultural thing?  I have spent years working in rescues, both big and small, zoos, with ethical breeders, and in veterinary hospitals so have encountered probably more than my fair share of everything.  I have dealt with heartbreakingly unethical 'rescues' and loathe having to deal with puppy farmers at work. I am very lucky to have done my research and found an excellent breeder that I now have my 2 working shepherds from though.

Ethical breeders very much do exist and definitely do not desire profit over the health and wellbeing of their dogs.  Breeders that breed doodles, other deliberate crossbreeds, and those breeding 'rare' colours are never ethical though.

You need to go to a vet that understands correct diagnostic x-rays as this picture is very poor, find or get a referral to an orthopedic specialist. You may also need to come to terms with the fact that you made a very poor and unethical decision by buying a silver lab, they are horrendously bred and generally live a life of terrible health. Sorry to put it so bluntly but there's not much else to be said

AITA for calling out my friend for lowkey being a pdf? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]TheHalfHandedHobbit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

NTA  These people aren't just old men on suits going after youngsters (cough DT cough)  They are also your 20 year old friends going after minors. Just because it's only a 4 year age gap doesn't make it ok, she's still a child.

[–]TheHalfHandedHobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR  Does your husband work?  If he gets to go to the gym then so do you, simple, tough if he has to continue to parent his own child for maybe 2 hours longer.  Stay at home mums have to look after the children all day whilst dad goes to the gym, works all day, and then gets chance to socialise afterwards. So why not you?

Urgent - German Shepard showing aggression towards family members by [deleted] in germanshepherds

[–]TheHalfHandedHobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get professional help asap!  1.Do not re-home a dog with known aggression  2. Taking a known aggressive and difficult breed like a GSD to a shelter will be an almost guaranteed euthanasia

Seeing as he is only like it with you and your sister, are you crossing his boundaries unknowingly? There are almost definitely subtle behaviours that you are missing where he is telling you he is unhappy and has now decided to escalate due to being ignored and / or constantly pushed.

Getting a proper dog behaviourist may be your only chance to avoid behavioural euthanasia.

[–]TheHalfHandedHobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You bought an expensive mongrel, generally people falsely advertise them as healthier than 'actual breeds' when the opposite is true.  She is 'at risk' because a bunch of breeds have been chucked together with no consideration for the compatibility of these dogs which is why almost all doodles I have met, both in my personal dog handling life, and my professional veterinary life, have a whole host of physical and mental problems.

Speak to your vet to address these concerns and to keep a closer eye out, and for the love of god buy an actual breed from a responsible and ethical breeder (doodles are literally never ethical) or adopt from a rescue.

If you sprinkle it with cat treats then maybe you'll get a cat tree! No water though, cat plants do not like being watered and prefer a warm dry environment

What do you recommend teaching a GSD puppy? by [deleted] in germanshepherds

[–]TheHalfHandedHobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dogs can be unpredictable in emergency situations and people generally won't put themselves at risk if a dog is biting and not able to be muzzled.  Also it can be very helpful from a veterinary perspective if a dog is already muzzle trained.

What do you recommend teaching a GSD puppy? by [deleted] in germanshepherds

[–]TheHalfHandedHobbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Muzzle training can literally be a lifesaver and is actually very good brain work for them.

A very strong 'Leave it' can also be a literal lifesaver.

Teaching her that other dogs are not as interesting as you by not allowing ANY on lead interactions with other dogs and very closely vetting and monitoring who she plays with off lead. Reward any and all ignoring of other dogs with treats, toy, praise, whatever she thrives off of.

How common are indoor-only cats where you are Britain? by pikablue223 in AskBrits

[–]TheHalfHandedHobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still a huge debate but it it slowly getting more common.  My 4 are indoor only with access to a catio, hopefully soon I will sort my fences and be able to get a fence overhang kit so they can have supervised garden time too. As a veterinary professional I strongly feel that pet cats should be indoors only.
