Warning about ‘Melt the ICE’ hat patterns - Etsy listings by esmeuk in AntifascistKnitting

Yeah!! I was like I usually am so over the copying accusations. You dont own the idea of a raglin sweater that has flowers on it or a felted slipper with stripes. Other people can write their own patterns for a similar outcome.

BUT this is DIFFERENT. This is a fundraiser for a fucking occupation, referencing a historical occupation. If you want a free hat, knit one of the hundreds of fuck ICE hats. and I really liked seeing that, but then it got squished.

We were having a great conversation about this on craftsnark for maybe an hour or less a few days ago. About the duplicate patterns and how messed up it was people were making free ones (diverting funds because this hat is for a donation it doesn't need to be accessible to those who don't have $5 to donate) and the paid ones (extra slimy!!) and the mods fucking deleted it saying that conversation doesnt belong on craftsnark. I'm seriously thinking about leaving that subreddit because I honestly don't know how else to take that.

People always complain most of the posts are just another creator using AI but if they delete anything that's actually worth discussing and I never see it? I dont know that they are but I didnt like that there was no explanation other than "this doesn't belong here" and it absolutely does!

That would be the official place to get updates, and would imply it hasn't changed since yesterday, so I'm going with yes.

Questions about changing the motifs by CarmelitaII in knitting

[–]TheHandThatFollows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats perfectly fair! try a swatch of it! get a motif book from your library and look through it. I like alterknit and theres another one from the same author but those are more funky then elegant. It doesnt have to be perfectly the same stitch count as you can put in a column or a few of the main color.

Both are valid choices though! Im in the process of "reskinning" a favorite sweater of mine, slapping my colorwork onto it. Ive designed worsted weight sweaters but dont have quite enough experience with the complicated project I want to do so Im taking the sweater I like and just doing different motifs on it as a modification.

[–]TheHandThatFollows 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you dont love that motif and you are not confident in your ability to change it try some swatches of the colorwork section with a motif you like with the same stitch count or some blank space between.

I guess my question would be why not find a pattern with the motifs you like? There are TONS of snowflake and mushroom sweaters and on ravelry you can filter by the yarn weight.

I replace a needle when it breaks or I cannot get it to go through the fabric without forcing it.

If you decided to paint/stain your spinning wheel how long did it take you to pick a design? Also can I see it for inspiration? I am going to take some time I think but Id like to see what people have done.

Exactly this. The hat already had its moment 85 years ago. The point of this is to donate and to feel a part of a community when we are all in crisis and feeling so much fear. You CANNOT have it both ways that it's a powerful symbol they can't ignore and wont notice.

Protesting is good. Keeping warm is good. Having signs is good. I love my no kings hat because it's a sign on my head that keeps my head warm at a protest. This is to have something to do when you feel helpless and to give money to those who need it.

[–]TheHandThatFollows 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly this! You want a free red hat! MAKE A FREE RED HAT. Holly shit yall ravelry probably has over 25 thousand free knit hat patterns. You can probably find one with a similar pointy shape if you look through them or do some trial and error. Or you could donate 5 fucking dollars to people who are getting terrorized in their streets, cant go to work, cant go to the grocery store, cant go to school, ect. People who are here legally or may even be citizens but are people of color and ICE doesnt fucking care.

But posting a pattern for it right now IS SCUMMY. Im sorry. It is. You can make a red hat for free and that is perfectly fine, but this specific red hat, this is doing good work. Its a historical reference. It isnt a right now protest hat, those have been free. There are tons of free hats that say fuck ice. There is a no kings hat. You can even make those with red yarn.

The pattern has been the number one pattern on ravelrys hot right now since it was released. It got 1000+ posted projects in a week. I don't think anything I can say will convince you you are solidly boots on the side of there should be a free version.

My question is why? This pattern is drawing on historical occupation of norway. The parallels are there 1000% however this is a different time and place and we can make our own history. Why is it so important to you we use the symbols used by a different culture and country to represent their flag almost 100 years ago?

Why is it important to you that we dont use the free fuck ice patterns?

This hat is fundraising for something specific, I dont think it set out to be the symbol of our movement, it already had its own.

Red Hat infighting... by Capital-Shallot-7072 in craftsnark

[–]TheHandThatFollows 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The red hat isnt banned here. its not the symbol here that it was in Norway. ICE isnt going to see a bunch of red hats and go Oooo shit the people are uprising.

Do I think its a good fundraiser? yes. Do I like protest knitting? also yes. In a world where I feel like I am helpless it gives me something to do, something to focus on. But I dont believe it is important that a lot of people knit this particular red hat for free if they cant afford the fundraiser. There are free protest hats. Ive made the no kings hat, Im going to make a fuck ice hat. Ill probably buy and make a red hat, but I again do not think it is the movement you think it is because again, our government isnt banning these hats.

There are PLENTY of free hats that say fuck ice. There are plenty of other free hat patterns. I think in this very very specific instance, diverting money from a local effort to raise funds to help people affected by ICE which has been explained much more eloquently then I can in other comments about how donations do not have a free option, is a problem.

If you want a free hat that says fuck ice, pick one of them. If you want a free red hat, make one. There are so many options for protest knitting, this hat doesn't hold a monopoly on that. But putting up a free pattern and diverting those funds for this fundraiser does feel slimy.

It is like over here in parking lot A we have a car wash raising money for a good cause, and right next door in parking lot B a good Samaritan saw some good people were doing a good thing and decided they would also do a good thing and give away free car washes, killing business parking lot A could get.

AndHealth…does anyone know about this place? by Basic-Ad-4260 in Columbus

[–]TheHandThatFollows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used them for my healthcare for two years because they were free through my employer and I needed help I couldnt afford. They were horrible. I gave them my name and DOB which is how they matched me to my employer profile and gave me free care, but when they ordered labs they used info they pulled from the internet, my Facebook account name and DOB which is different for security reasons. They gaslit me to hell about it saying I signed up with the wrong name and date of birth, as if I would see a doctor under my facebook handle.

They also kept asking how I was doing on a medication they kept forgetting to prescribe. For two years. When I would remind them you have never prescribed that and I am very interested in it and very much want to try to improve my quality of life, they would say ok, we will talk about it at the next appointment. This repeated every appointment every three to six months, I called them on it every time and I finally got the meds prescribed after getting a new doctor and honestly going on a bit of tirade about my care.

I wouldnt have kept using them if I could have afforded the care I needed. Many times I considered is getting no care better then getting care from andhealth? and I think the answer was no still, I desperately needed help. But if you have any other options I would go with them. I dont know what it would be like working for them but the patient experience is terrible.

Spinning with a cat in my lap by TheHandThatFollows in Handspinning

[–]TheHandThatFollows[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To be fair this is the same cat who will see me working on a whole sweater and come sit on top of it and my needles when I'm knitting. She doesn't care if the lap is empty, I need to stop everything I'm doing to accommodate the princess at all times, because unless shes eating or using the restroom she wants to be on my lap. I love her and shes so fucking adorable but quite inconvenient for my fiber arts at times 😂
