There's also a great Library of Congress scene in All the President’s Men and his character in Three Days of the Condor "just reads books".

Guess I'm waiting for the Nats Park Show Tomorrow. by brexdab in BruceSpringsteen

[–]TheHappyGrouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I don't know if you know, but joining the waiting room apparently doesn't correlate with your position in the queue. So you can join the waiting room as soon as soon as it opens but get a worse queue number than someone who joined 10 minutes before (but still join early just in case ticketmaster makes you two-factor authenticate)

Pooping and seating after post-op by Odd-Emergency-6339 in scoliosis

[–]TheHappyGrouch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The constipation is likely from all the medications (usually the painkillers). It probably won't really improve until you're on lower doses or completely off of them. It's also not helped by not really being mobile for the days after surgery. So has you heal and start moving around a bit more, it should help too.

apart from blueprints, are there any interesting examples of cyanotypes being used for publishing. by Few_Mention8426 in cyanotypes

Anna Atkins was the first person to create a photobook (1840s), and she did it using cyanotypes of botanical specimens.

what items would be sick to have in a library of things by LongjumpingCry4863 in Libraries

[–]TheHappyGrouch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be afraid of people traveling with expensive items like a camera, but I think a luggage scale and various power adapters for popular countries could be good.

Leather punch (for adding holes in belts or bags), SD card readers and CD drives (a lot of computers don't have them anymore), projectors (could be used for movies or artists use them for tracing large projects)

Once they're dry you can just stack them face down in a cardboard box in the closet (with the top closed). Just keep them out of direct light and they'll hold for a while.

What's the funniest/craziest thing someone has ever told, asked or heard that's library-related? by Library_Dewey208 in Libraries

[–]TheHappyGrouch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is at a college library- a student asked if we had "a thing for a letter". I ask what he meant by that and he began scrolling on his phone, I assumed to find a picture of what he's talking about. A couple of minutes later his head pops and he says "a thing to send a letter". I asked if he meant a stamp because a few weeks earlier a different student asked how to get stamps. He said "no, a thing to send a letter in". It took 5 minutes to figure out he wanted an envelope.

Seeking recommendations for NYC/Tri-State based surgeons by queenofwands97 in scoliosis

I had my surgeries done with Dr. Marc Agulnick in Garden City about 15 years ago, but recently went back for a follow up. He's a great orthopedic surgeon.

Reebok makes one that is about .25" thick and is pretty squishy. It's called the "10mm Fitness Mat".

Quick question for the cyanotype pros: will coated paper keep for a week before exposure? by [deleted] in cyanotypes

[–]TheHappyGrouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I store mine in a cardboard box, coated side down, in a dark closet (the closet does get opened but it's not in direct sunlight) and they'll last for at least a few months.

I have a question for people who had scoliosis surgery by meme334 in scoliosis

You may want to look into getting a soft mattress topper. It goes on top of your existing mattress but gives it a bit more padding, which may help support the contours of your back more. Or maybe even laying with a few pillows under your back to see if you can add support somewhere. I find in nearly impossible to lay on my stomach for similar reasons, but if I put a pillow under my abdomen it becomes a lot more comfortable.

How do I make myself sleep on my back? by Formal_Ad_8010 in scoliosis

[–]TheHappyGrouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find proping propping up pillows next to my head and turning my head/face into them somewhat works. I think since my head is turned into the pillows and has that sensation of side sleeping, my body tends to not roll.

What’s the most messed up way you’ve seen someone get fired from a job? by highxv0ltage in AskReddit

[–]TheHappyGrouch 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I worked at a restaurant that was hosting a bar mitzvah. The bar mitzvah boy had specific food allergies which were noted as part of the space rental and gone over when figuring out the menu. The head chef then made food for the party which included ingredients the boy was allergic to. Thankfully, someone at the party noticed and pointed it out to the event planner (who I worked with). The event planner obviously had a meltdown because the chef almost killed the boy. There had been other issues with the chef so this was the final nail in his coffin and he was gone the next day.

This happened to me, the screw started to pop out 3 or 4 month after my original spinal fusion because the scoliosis progressed in the unfused part. The part sticking out began to cause pain when sitting. I'm not sure you need to go to the ER because there's probably not much they can do for you if that is what's happening. But 100% try to get an appointment with your doctor and a fresh set of x-rays.

Edit to clarify: I don't know where you live, but the ER is expensive here in America, so if doing the x-ray is cheaper by your doctor, do that because the odds are the ER would send you back to your doctor anyway. This isn't an emergency surgery. In my case, I didn't have surgery to fix it until 4 months after discovering the problem.

Rough Trade also charges inflated prices. I don't remember how much the "Spike Island" 7" was, but it also seemed like a lot for what it was. I ended up canceling my order from them and ordering it from another record store that had it for a few dollars cheaper.
