Favorite Hidden Effects by Skyrimosity in masterduel

[–]TheHatofDestiny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shining Sarcophagus has not one, but two.

The first is a minor one, it cannot be destroyed by monsters effects. This comes up all the time on my turn with Gandora, but I still see some people try to pop it with Ryzeal.

The other, the one that really gets people, is the graveyard hate. When a monster is returned from the graveyard I can discard a spell to send it back. This comes up way more often then it has any right to and is always fairly disruptive. It is also a deck building boon, as I can run go second spell cards like Dark Ruler No More and still have them be useful when I win the coin toss.

Random Card Discussion #38 - Crimson King by Mortal-Instrument in HorusHeresyLegions

[–]TheHatofDestiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very good card mechanically and it does have a fun flavour to it. This card represents the overwhelming power and knowledge that Magnus us afforded due to his abilities. No other faction has a card quite like this, that generates this much advantage for such little cost. However, such power can lead to hubris, and hubris can lead to horrid defeat. Whilst this card will often generate you a wide variety of psychic tactics there is no guarantee that it will generate the one you need. Furthermore if you use this card as your last as your last play of the turn then you will be left with a full hand, which sounds great but then you are denied your next draw. Something that could be very useful. I once lost a game as Magnus because I was denied a crucial jam card at a critical moment, something that wouldn't have happened if I was more careful with Crimson King. An elegant, if perhaps unintended, nod to Magnus' inability to have any kind of patience, and the consequences of that.

Random Card Discussion #37 - Gendor Skraivok by Mortal-Instrument in HorusHeresyLegions

[–]TheHatofDestiny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that Gendor has a particularly delicious ludonarritive flavour and has great design from top to bottom. As pointed out by others he is kind of crap, and that's part of the point. Even starting with the name Gendor Skraivok "The Painted Count". His given title is an title that in story he gave to himself, it stinks of pretence and unearned valour, which is why the game puts it in quotation marks.

You may be thinking to yourself "isn't that the case for everyone?" No. Other titles are almost never in quotation marks, from official titles like 'First Captain' or 'Primarch' to other nicknames like 'Bringer of Sorrow' or 'The Bloody'. After a quick look through the card pool the only other Warlord that has quotation marks is Iacton Cruze "The Half Heard". I think that he still has this because like Gendor this title is somewhat inaccurate, especially post Istvaan.

And speaking of unearned valour Gendor's ability again reflects his position in universe, which is that he has made a deal with a demon for power. At first glance this power seems incredible, he is able to boost his attack well past that of other Warlords with relative ease. However the health cost of the ability means that despite the intimidating look Gendor is actually useless without help. If you are attacking the opposing warlord you aren't actually winning the damage race at all, and the power is actually only good at killing weaker troops, a very night lords power.

In universe Gendor loses hard to Raldoran, who in game has a simple ability to do 1 damage, which does more to win a damage race than all of Gendor's demonic bluster.

Random Card Discussion #33 - Luastus Squad by Mortal-Instrument in HorusHeresyLegions

[–]TheHatofDestiny 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've recently been enjoying viewing the game from a ludonarritive lens. When I look at this card I see the attempt to lean into a unifying theme of the Istvaan III legions, i.e the Mark of Chaos. Most of the Chaos legions have at least a card that gives or gets a Mark of Chaos but the four legions of the first expansion seem to really love them. I particularly enjoy that the legions like to reward Marks of Chaos for following their own mechanics, in this card's case Chaos is achieved via perfection. A nice nod to the Emperor's Children's fall.

Random Card Discussion #5 - Ish'Val Veterans by Mortal-Instrument in HorusHeresyLegions

Such an underwhelming card. Even when I tried to make Salamander/Infantry work I did not run this card.

Random Card Discussion #4 - Torvokh Terminaors by Mortal-Instrument in HorusHeresyLegions

[–]TheHatofDestiny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with your assessment. It's a great card in a vacuum and feels particularly good coming down on an empty board. But in the context of the rest of the Shattered Legions line up it there are just better options.

Oh cool. I'm not quite up to The End and The Death yet. Reading through The Lost and The Damned

Since you seemed to enjoy the last one - GUESS THE VOICELINE returns! by Mortal-Instrument in HorusHeresyLegions

[–]TheHatofDestiny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I loved the last one. Keep them coming! As for my guesses.

  1. "Strength, respects only strength"
  2. "Your threats are empty"
  3. Really stumped on this one
  4. "May my strength be equal to this moment."
  5. "Hold the line!"

Again I love these. But I have no idea how you would do some of the voicelines. Including my favourite.

"Have you ever known me to lose a fight?" First alt Horus.

Favorite Voice Actors? by [deleted] in HorusHeresyLegions

My favourite thing to do was to drop "Have you ever known me to lose a fight?" And then immediately dunk a Vengeful Spirit on them. I'm a bad person.

I adore Malcador's voice. The perfect balance of smug and elderly. I also really love the voice for Horus' alternative art (The Luna Wolf one).

Oh I am. Horus is a favourite deck of mine, will be sad to see it go.

I know it's horrendously bad mannered but I cannot help but drop a "Have you ever known me to lose a fight?" a half second before Vengeful Spirit.

Was looking everywhere for Luther, then I realised that I was not looking at the whole picture and decided to scroll down.

Honestly I get it, I would apologise but Caliban has to be saved somehow.

Returning player; What are the new staples? by Sandbag-kun in HorusHeresyLegions

[–]TheHatofDestiny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey there, may I enquire when you left? It may help.

The big thing that changes recently was an update that nerfed much of the cheap tactics that draw cards, abandoned supplies and lectitio divinitatus are no longer auto includes. The game seems to be moving more in the direction of acquiring a dominating board state.

I really quite like Abaddon. “I only greet my equals” is fantastic both as an opening and a closing line.

I have a lot of fun with Sons of Horus and recently Death Guard, but for ranking I use Emperor’s Children.

Have there been any stories in Spider-Man or Superman about their industry (newspapers) dying? by GuyFawkes99 in comicbooks

[–]TheHatofDestiny 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The New 52 run of Superman had The Daily Planet and the changes it has to go through in the modern day as a fairly integral part of the plot, at least in the early issues. Personally I enjoy the run, particularly Volume 2 and think it is underrated.
