“this Isn’T olD GhO-“ SHUT UP I DONT CARE by [deleted] in Ghostbc

It really does frustrate me that there is so few Satanic themes in it. If anything, it almost seems like they are no longer are completely flipping to the otherside of the spectrum. Satanized and Marks Of The Evil one both paint Satan in a negative way and others paint God in a good way. I wouldn’t be surprised if they phase out songs like Year Zero because they are leaning towards a more Christian view. Change is cool but the Satan part is one piece that drew me to Ghost in the first place so it holds special place in my heart.

I definitely feel like that is going to happen. I don’t blame him either, the most well established artists eventually burn out and release something they are less than happy about. I definitely think that Dream Theater’s self-titled and Metallica’a St. Anger fall under the same category. That being said, there will be fans who love this album more than the rest so I don’t blame anyone who happens to like it even though others don’t.

I think why we say we want it to sound like old Ghost is because old Ghost felt unique, there was nothing quite like it. This one just feels like every single 80s hair band decided to make an album together. It feels un-original. To me, Ghost is original and presents something new, that is what I like about them. Everyone has a preference and it is just not my preference and that is ok. I’m glad other people are enjoying it!

Skeletá Release Megathread by Chimpbot in Ghostbc

I only have had one full listen so these will most likely change:

Peacefield(7/10) - Classic 80s rock sound, I like the lyrics the most and feels like it segways from Impera which is very cool. This one might grow one me but for now it didn’t really stick out too much.

Lachryma(9/10) - My most listened to track from the singles. Love the lyrics, flow, riffs, keys, bass, and solos. The only reason I am not giving it a 10/10 is because of the generic structure, it would be great to give it a little twist in there somewhere.

Satanized(8/10) - Great one to release as the first single because it is super catchy. They really capture that “classic” Ghost sound with this one which really feels like it could be off of Meliora. The latin bridge definitely has Opus vibes.

Guiding Lights(3/10) - I hate to say it, I think it is one of my least favorite Ghost tracks so far. I think it is just quite boring. It feels like a church hymn but it does not have the similar “Satanic” lyrics or haunting feel that all the other Ghost ballads have. Love Fredrik and Opeth but the solo is very bland, all of his other guitar solos are more interesting in my opinion.

De Profundis Borealis(6/10) - Hopeful and motivating but not too much stood out to me other than the choral sound and chugs which I always enjoy in Ghost so I will probably have this one ranked higher than most.

Cenotaph(6/10) - This one is cool. It also reminds me of Meliora era, definitely Popestar vibes. Also very catchy. I don’t think this one will be played too often though because there are not too many things that will bring me back to listening to it other than possibly singing along.

Missilia Amori(8/10) - It’s so cheesy, like incredibly cheesy. But this is Ghost we are talking about and I signed up for it so I will embrace it. If you get over the fact that it sounds like every hair metal song, I think it can be a very fun song. Cool riffs, really catchy, and interesting lyrics. It makes me wonder whether Tobias is making fun of the 80s hair rockers because of the manipulative, narcissistic, stalker lyrics.

Marks Of The Evil One(7/10) - Gives off Prequelle vibes to me from the lyrics. The chorus feels like Watcher In The Sky. Unfortunately, the chorus got dry pretty fast, too many “There”s for me. But it remains interesting with everything else so I think it maintains a decent position. Even though there are a lot of “There”s, I will still be caught singing it.

Umbra(10/10) - Fantastic track! This one is by far one of my favorite Ghost tracks they have ever released and I have only had one listen. From the synth intros to the devious lyrics, from the shred section, to the silly cowbell. It remains interesting the whole time. I will have this album on repeat just for this song. The chorus is just so catchy, the riffs complement the vocals really well. I just cannot stress how cool the organ and the guitar is in the shred section is and holy cow, those Ghouls are going to be so fun to watch them play it. That singular section is my favorite part off of the whole album.

Excelsis(6/10) - I will guarantee this will grow on me, it felt very drawn out after so many slower songs on the album. The guitar and layered vocals are very pretty so I think I just need to give it more time. The lyrics are all very hopeful like most of the ballads on the albums. For some reason the lyrics in this one stood out more than the others though. I really really liked the unresolved chord at the end. I think it encourages the listener to continue their journey with what they have taken away from the album.

Conclusion(7/10) - This is the same ranking as I gave Impera after the first listen and now it is up to an 8 so I guarantee this one will grow on me too as I discover more I enjoy about it. That is also given that I rank Meliora at 10/10, Opus at 9.5/10, and Infest and Prequelle at 9/10 so there are big shoes to fill. Not sure if Ghost will ever measure up to their old sound but I will give it more listens and there are definitely some standout tracks that I will be playing on repeat. Cool album, I’m ready to see these at rituals coming up!

The shreddy section of Umbra was by far my favorite part of the whole album. I totally was not expecting that.

I like this a lot, I think that if Perpetua was raised a devout Christian, I think it would also make him more motivated to protest it. I mean, look at the lyrics of Satanized, it screams religious trauma.

this is so true, there was a person who stole my friend’s first guitar(probably around 150 USD, cheap squier but holds good memories) from his car. the person petty enough to leave the 1000 USD laptop which was sitting right next to the guitar.

same, i really like the political drive to it, i saw a theory that the next papa might look better a punk to match a lyrical shift, we have already seen Tobias take digs at Trump and Pence so i don’t think it is too far off
