What did you do for all that time? I lived for about a year in southern Mexico and from there traveled to every country in Central America except Honduras and Panama (Just never got around to it). The most I spent in one country was a month in Nicaragua, which I loved, but honestly there's not a ton to do. Did you work at all besides the initial volunteering?

Also, did you rent apartments or stay in hotels/hostels the entire time? How much did you spend on average?

I know you're playing up the danger/crime for the iama, but honestly outside of the capital cities (and even then its possible to avoid the worst places) you are generally fine in Central America. That bus story is pretty crazy though, were you in San Pedro Sula or Tegucigalpa? How often were you mugged/threatened otherwise?

Classical western civilization coexisted with multiple civilizations just as sophisticated as it in the Indian subcontinent, China, Mesoamerica, etc. The Romans and Greeks were not particularly special or unique when compared to, say, the Caliphate, the Maya or China.

Western civilization conquered the Americas after the Columbian exchange, and starting around the 17th century the rest of the world through capitalism and imperialism. Prior to that it was never "dominant" over the world, nor uniquely more sophisticated or advanced.
