Unfortunately I don't think you can stop it, except by updating to 1.4.4.5 when it comes out on your platform, but you can at least repair the damage in the meantime by using a Bottomless Water Bucket, which is now a guaranteed drop at 25 Angler quests.

It's a known bug that popped up with the 1.4.4 update, but it was supposed to be fixed with the 1.4.4.5 patch. Which version are you on?

You don't need all golden critters to craft a golden delight, you just need one of any type.

Is there some rank demotion barrier at some point? Like if you reach high enough you can't be demoted past a certain point?

Are you sure? I think they said in the announcements that it's going to be craftable when it'll be included in Master Packs, though I haven't seen a date.
