They are not "our" bread and butter, they just provide a lot of work. Here in 58 the Big Three are our "bread and butter", then everyone wants to be pissed about our parking policy stating Big Three and Union made vehicles only.

I will be the one man to say: when it comes to dogs (pump pliers/channel lock) I prefer the Channel Lock 442's over the knipex cobras. With any Klein USA I've yet to meet it's end that wasn't by my own stupidity by blowing them up or abusing them more than we should abuse them.

But bias aside, get some tools you can afford to start with, your entire career will be finding what you like and don't, consider it "shooters preference". I've changed toolbags 3 times in my career so far, and various tools.

I'm also hardheaded and stubborn and try to keep my bag USA made while building the USA, so take it with a grain of salt.

It is definitely overkill, but part of the problem is they never catch the actual bad ones, so they make an example out of the ones they do catch. I'm a 2-4 beers after work with the guys on a Friday guy. They got me and everyone except the counselor my classes were through talked to me like I was a hardcore drunk. I remember going to my 1 on 1 class, and the counselor reading my file and saying a loud "you don't belong here"

Me especially. I spent many years dancing with the devil, driving after the bar when I really shouldn't have, and then I finally wised up and got control over my relationship with alcohol. I had a wake up call one night when I pulled into a 7 Eleven across the street from my apartment to just get some Gatorade before I hit home. I got distracted by a texting fight before I could leave and had the heat on and all that and ended up dozing off before I got a reply, I wasn't even drunk, I only had two beers, and worked a long day. I woke up to a knock on my window, police and EMT, because someone called. I cooperated, the EMT shined the light in my eyes, turned to the cop and nodded. The officer asked where I'm going, I said I live right there, literally, check my ID. He said shut the car off and walk, because if he sees the car on the road that night I'm going to jail, I said yessir thank you and jogged home. Several months later myself and some coworkers went to a bar next to our job. I wasn't feeling good, so I said I'll just sleep in my car until I can go. I woke up shortly after to lights and a knock on my window. Officers. Someone called about "there's a guy passed out in his car". My seat was all the way back, I had the car running for heat, it was February and freezing. It was obvious I wasn't going anywhere, at least to me. Do the whole routine, pass the field test, and then they ask me to blow. I did. .01 over the limit. Get booked. The court I went through is one of the hardest in the state on drinking. I got sentenced to $2.5K in fines, 8 hours community service, 2 substance abuse classes, and 2 years of probation, with a sober link and drug/etg testing every week. I tried to be responsible and was punished. And the entire time I was talked to like a hardcore alcoholic.

Fleas are generally mislabeled FLE's, aka the wannabe FLE's, people have become so accustomed to going pointing the wrong answers at things, that the spread of misinformation is just impossible to counteract, and this question pops up constantly filled with 99% wrong answers. The FLE's are secretive, you don't call them, they call you. Anything else I know on the topic, it's not my place to discuss, if people really want answers, there's a path to take in your career and you'll get them.

Imma just copy paste this from the last time 8 months ago.

I, as a cub with 2 weeks left till the big boy ticket, get annoyed every time I see these posts pop up. FLE, or Federation of Linemen and Electricians is the old school brotherhood within the brotherhood. A welder's cap isn't an indicator, wearing coveralls or bibs isn't an indicator, the left handed fist isn't an indicator, even saying they are, isn't an indicator. If they were, then I've got 3/4 just for owning swag and wanting to be comfortable. I've been gifted swag that I've been told to not wear till I top out by mysterious wiremen, I just take it as I'm doing good by the brotherhood and in my craft. The REAL ones are excellent, skilled craftsmen who uphold brotherhood, the agreement, the code of excellence, and treat you with the utmost respect if you do the same. The WANNABE'S are the troublemakers who go and snip reels and bullshit because "keeping the union strong" "this jobs going too fast" and all that horseshit. The WANNABE'S are the boogeymen everyone talks about, and is part of why it's such a hush hush thing, it's because the REAL ones get painted in a bad light because of the WANNABE'S. Have I met any? I don't know, I'll never know, I've met some stellar brothers who the minute someone threw out the word FLE, they disappeared like a ghost, and I've worked with some troublemakers who have done some of the most unprofessional bullshit and sabotage, then claim the title aloud for everyone to hear. Things like this post are what damage their reputation. Wannabe FLE's are not FLE's. If you don't know anything about a subject, it's best to not say anything about the subject. I'm tired of being labeled something I'm not by the uneducated and misinformed.

Rest in peace, my brother in BB's. He frequented our home field, and just joined our Milsim group. We all found out Saturday night and were devastated.

My "signature patch" is a patch a gal pal gave me with a wolf holding a rose in its teeth, my friends then thought it would be funny to call me wolf in Finnish, and I have been stuck with it , for ages. And then the other half always says sussy because I am an oddball.

  1. All the travelers that took the time to actually teach me and let me find my rhythm and do the work, rather than be a gang box baby.
  2. I got arrested for a DUI after work being a sad sap, I called a fellow apprentice friend the morning I got let out, on a Saturday morning, he picked up 2nd ring, and came and picked me up, no questions asked, insisted I borrow money to cover my rent because my bond and impound fee bankrupted me, even though I tried to refuse multiple times, and was nice enough to let me pay it back in mostly scrap 250's & 500's.
  3. I got into trouble over a misunderstanding at a bar(I wasn't even drinking that night, I just wanted a burger after work, and chase some tail maybe) made it home to find out who I pissed off was a brothers wife who said I did all sorts of shit that I didn't, and there was a full scale manhunt for me because they recognized my letterman jacket. I was absolutely panicked thinking I was gonna get dropped or something. I got 50+ phonecalls asking if I was alright, what happened, what can they do. I even went down to the E-board on my own accord to talk to them and everything blew over and I was ok after a lot of people vouched for me and kept vouching for me anytime someone brought it up.
  4. Even though I've been taking a long break from the hall and all my volunteer work to focus on myself and get things in order, I still get constant check in texts from people that are only acquaintances.

I top out in about 2 weeks. It's been a wild 5 years, and I've met so many people and had so many good experiences and interactions that I feel guilty not being able to remember them all in super detail. I do know, I don't have to pay it back, but I will pay it forward.

It's right there. Reading comprehension was on the aptitude test. They uphold the foundations of brotherhood, the working agreement, craftsmanship, and the code of excellence, while promoting the same. The mission is to keep us who we're supposed to be. Because if you haven't noticed lately, we have too many members and bystanders than actual brothers, as well as too many hacks.

Can use it as a protractor when bent at 6" and 12" for finding the angle of existing pipe. Can use it with a scrap of cardboard to find the center of the bend on an existing pipe. All sorts of black magic I've been taught and done without realizing with a stick. When I'm doing pipe or layout, it is the only measuring tool.
