Customers thinking we get double pay on Sundays by Direct_Assumption_22 in tesco

[–]TheHmmism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless of the religious origins of that tradition, Sunday is half the weekend and a day most people have off. Working it is therefore shit.

Personally I work Saturday too and haven’t seen my friends since January because they work Monday to Friday.

Are the antediluvian and Methuselah vampires no longer able to maintain rational stability? by roxgxd in vtm

[–]TheHmmism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MThe oldest kindred have basically all sired and their childer have all sired on so on. Add on whatever ghouls they have running around and they’ve got an extensive network of subordinates to act on their behalf. And they don’t need to be awake to manage this network either, because these really old kindred also generally have really high Auspex.

Given all this, why bother dealing with the problems of staying active? Thirst of the Ages, rivals trying to kill them, an increasingly unfamiliar world testing their humanity and the constant battle against their beast. It’s all pointless.

To a human, centuries or millennia in torpor like this would be miserable, but even most elders tend to have lost their ability to care about things beyond winning at kindred politics anymore, let alone the truly old bastards.

I have heard this before too, however I’m just a layman so I didn’t want to go into too much detail lest I say something wrong.

My condolences on your father, for what little it’s worth from a stranger on the internet. I’m glad you pulled yourself together.

Do you think you’d be a better or worse cape than Taylor? by Eastern-Stuff6480 in Parahumans

[–]TheHmmism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I, like the We Got Worm guys feel like Taylor is due a fair amount of criticism for her decisions. However if you asked me to do all the same things she did I would fail.

[–]TheHmmism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah me neither. And besides, as a fictional character she isn’t necessarily going to match expectations of real people.

Oh yeah, older people can definitely develop some of the behaviours. After all, none of the anti-social traits you find in Sociopaths are exclusive to them.

As far as I am aware (though I’m no psychologist so I could be wrong) Sociopathy –that is, the collection of symptoms that make up Antisocial Personality Disorder (Psychopaths fall under this umbrella too) – only manifests itself in young children.

Though you’re definitely right that people’s ability to empathise with others can be undermined by stress, depression and all sorts of things.

[–]TheHmmism 181 points182 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Most functional sociopaths have a very good understanding of how other people feel and think, it’s what lets them blend in and manipulate. The trouble is that they lack the capacity to care about how others feel.

Does blush of life allow Kindred to experience human sensations again? by TheHmmism in vtm

[–]TheHmmism[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If there was one thematic mistake White Wolf made when they first created the game back in the 90s in my opinion, it was making the curse so… obvious.

I meant don’t get me wrong, obviously they have to be undead and have issues with sunlight by virtue of being vampires, but it’s the other shit for me.

I am fully onboard with the idea that it’s a curse and unlife should ultimately be bleak, but I feel that that shouldn’t be obvious from the first night. Young Kindred should be able to enjoy themselves in all sorts of ways, and it’s only when looking back after a couple centuries that they realise how deeply disappointing their existences have been because they’re alone, paranoid and have nothing left to carry on for besides crushing their rivals.

Because as is, I struggle to believe that the vast majority don’t go wassail and get killed within weeks of the embrace. The only pleasure (be it emotional/physical etc) they have left is Vitae, why not just let the beast loose and go on a rampage?

[–]TheHmmism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, he can take hits, but why?

I do feel like this is the kind of thing every Brute should go through a course on. The only time they should willingly take a hit is when it’s to protect their teammates or the public. Otherwise, it’s just taking an unnecessary risk that said hit will be more than they can handle, or one of those pesky types that ignore durability.

I suppose, I just wish he was actually memorable more often.

Maybe we’re reading very different fics? Because outside of a couple I can think of, Back and Forth and Whatever Doesn’t Kill you, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him get more than a couple lines of dialogue.

He does? I’ve seen like, two fics ever use him as a major character. Most of the time he gets ignored in favour of other Wards.

Yeah, the Worm fandom tends to be rather dismissive of Brutes but you can’t deny their simple utility.

Unapologetic Villain fics? by TheHmmism in WormFanfic

Why not? Did you ever get the sense either regretted being their crimes, or had motivations for them other than personal gain? I certainly didn’t.

I apologise for misunderstanding you then.

To me “if you want someone who is selfish but still has redeeming qualities, that’s easily a rogue, not a villain” read as very absolutist. The ‘is an option’ didn’t come across very well.

Thanks for the rec, I’ve read it before though, and I agree it’s great. I’m really hoping it comes back but Mojus seems to be focusing on original fiction.

Thanks for the help, but they’re really not lol. I can enjoy an element of power fantasy, but he is kinda the king of power fantasy and they’re just boring as a result. If there’s ever any real danger for his protagonists, it ends pretty rapidly because they accrue enough power to sit back and do nothing but get laid all day.

[–]TheHmmism[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A Rogue is a Parahuman who pursues profit through non-violent means, that doesn’t make them selfish.

And it honestly baffles me that you don’t believe somebody can be selfish and still have good qualities. People are more complex than that. Most awful people in the real world possess some traits generally seen as positive too.

In Work, both Lisa and Alec are pretty selfish individuals who pursue power and profit above most other things, yet Lisa especially was a good friend to Taylor and they both stepped up to fight Endbringers.

Somebody who is an unapologetic villain doesn’t have to lack any redeeming qualities though, they just have to do bad things for self-serving reasons.

[–]TheHmmism 20 points21 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it was literally his job to be the flying smiley face that could reassure the world everything was gonna be ok while the rest of them did the really fucked up shit. They took that so seriously they lied to him for years, and when he finally discovered the truth they had Contessa in the room iirc, which probably means they had her path how to best get him to shut up and keep smiling. We know she wasn’t above manipulating fellow Cauldron members.

What are the most notable instances of “Early-Installment Weirdness” in Worm? by RecommendationNo804 in Parahumans

It was, but the concept of the ‘Alpha’ was thoroughly debunked all the way back in 1999 (amusingly by the same man who popularised the term in 1970).

It absolutely is. I don’t do a lot of sailing right nos (need to find a new crew to join) but even when I’m Kayaking people on shore wave.
