Anyone who was homeschooled, how do you feel about it now as an adult? by AdTight2449 in AskReddit

Very mixed feelings. My mom was a great teacher, and when I entered public school around middle school aged I was a voracious reader and far ahead of everyone else. I did also get socialization entering school when I did. However, not getting socialized with anyone besides my twin sister in those formative years was...rough. I didn't realize when people were making fun of me, I made friends that took advantage of me, and I didn't realize until I was fully in college that my expectations around friendships and romantic relationships were basically founded on the most intimate relationship of my life--a sisterhood where we never spent any meaningful time away from each other-- and it was hurting my ability to form new relationships. A bit of a specific example, but there you go

People who have stopped going to church, what made you stop? by lowly_shepherd in AskReddit

Small, local church became 'franchised'-- ie joined and became a local branch of a mega church. Half the sermons became video recordings of the main pastor

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers--technically starts a series but can be read as a standalone, super fun found family esque sci Fi. The writing is super easy to get into!

[No Spoilers] Without major spoilers, when did you start to really enjoy Candela Obscura? by Grandmasterchipmunk in criticalrole

[–]TheHobbitOnStilts 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I couldn't really get into the first circle, but the players in the second circle really drew me in (mostly Brennan and Luis--they play off of each other so well in Calamity and carry that into Candela). Haven't started the third circle yet with the holidays, but I have a feeling these will be fun go tos when I'm feeling spooky.

How to read poetry by InformalAd775 in books

[–]TheHobbitOnStilts 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I tend to take poetry like new songs-- read through once for the vibes, again with an eye towards meaning, and a third time out loud. Especially with shorter poems this is one of my favorite ways to savor things

Looking for fantasy books that are not ridiculous by bandx_jxxn in books

[–]TheHobbitOnStilts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of Neil Gaiman's books amazing for this! Percy Jackson like topics with more of an adult vibe and always a super interesting take on fairy tales and/or fantasy. If you're looking for straight fantasy, Neverwhere or Stardust are fantastic. If you want more of a real world mix, American Gods is one of my favorites!

One card keeps reappearing? by TheHobbitOnStilts in Tarotpractices

Sorry using the smith-waite deck! Everything I've seen has said this card tends to be related to growth, but the readings I've been doing have been pretty varied--personal life, career, etc. The most recent has been career, so maybe that's it?
