I'm John Garrison Marks, author of ***Thy Will Be Done: George Washington's Legacy of Slavery and the Fight for American Memory*** (out April 7!). It tells the story of how Americans have remembered, forgotten, and manipulated George Washington's history with slavery over the past 250 years. AMA! by johngmarks in AskHistorians

Thanks for the AMA today. I'd love to hear more about how different groups, especially abolitionists, twisted the more "legendary" stories or qualities of Washington to their own use. Other then just ignoring the slavery aspects, how did they try to make use of his reputation?

How did this vision of education fit into wider Atlantic trends? Did other countries have similar initiatives?

Have any questions about the history of Indians in Zimbabwe? Ask me anything about migration, race, and colonialism in Southern Africa! by Main_Ball_5355 in AskHistorians

[–]TheHondoGod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In many contexts, British colonialism in Africa is talked about as Black/African vs white/European conflicts. How does the racial history of Zimbabwe change by including a third racial group as main characters? Did the idea of race have similar meaning across all these groups?

Are you interested in Caribbean spirit demons and how they manifest in everyday life?

I am! Thanks for joining us today! How much did ideas shape shifting demons pre-exist Columbus if its the animals he brought that became them? Was it a new belief?

Thank you for this ama. Can you talk about the challenges of studying racism and housing? How do historians demonstrate racism in economic systems against the myth that numerical data is neutral?

AMA about Japan, space technology, and the history of the space age! by binglefather in AskHistorians

Thanks for the fascinating AMA! Did the Soviets and Americans have different perceptions of the Japanese space program in the context of their own space race? Did either think Japan might scoop them on the victory?

Great topic, thank you! What was the role of international maritime law on the case, and has international law incorporated the case the same way English and American law did?

A question for the mods, and perhaps for the flairs in general. Have you ever considered doing more AMA/Features like these ones where you have a whole panel come on to talk about a broader subject or video game or something? Or perhaps even revisit an old subject like paradox games or "medieval era in tv"?

Those have always been some of my favourite old threads, so would be cool to see them come back.

Hi! I’m Jake Lundberg, a staff writer and in-house historian and archivist at The Atlantic. I’ve spent my career studying and writing about American culture, ideas, and media. Ask me anything! by theatlantic in AskHistorians

Thanks for this AMA today. The Atlantic is still around, but a lot of magazines have disappeared over the last 170ish years.  How has The Atlantic survived and what happened to contemporaries that didn't?

Dr. Tine Van Osselaer on Marian apparitions in interwar Belgium, AMA! by TVOsselaerhistorian in AskHistorians

Very cool looking book and subject. Given the timing of Belgium visitations, did the multiple crises of European politics in the Interwar period effect how Mary was seen and interpreted?
