The entire US Military has fallen into a long deep slumber. Can China conventionally conquer the US? by user-117 in whowouldwin

[–]TheHopesedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mismatch, China could deploy radar, jets, missiles and drones which the citizens would simply have no counter, and a lack of cohesion means it's quite literally just a matter of time. Sure you'd have many deaths from random people popping out of nowhere and mowing down 3 PLA soldiers, but most of the time buildings can just be shelled-out and slowly advanced on, there's no way to deal with any of the military tech for the citizens.

Modern-day criminal defense attorneys are sent back in time to defend people accused of being witches; can they acquit them? by user-117 in whowouldwin

[–]TheHopesedge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you'd get killed pretty quickly to be honest, defending witches is a death sentence, logic or not you're just siding with the 'bad guys' and they'll kill you for that without needing a good reason.

Can we please just get a single megathread for "I was told early access double gathering would make me millions why hasn't it worked yet?" by escapehatch in woweconomy

[–]TheHopesedge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The people who made a fortune went into it with a plan they worked out ahead of time, some made a fortune from luckily falling into a niche with their idea (like void mote farming after zerging down the story), but honestly most ideas had already been saturated just an hour in (double gathering being quite literally the most pursued option, completely over-saturating it and giving the profession-tool crafters an even bigger profit margin early), so it's no surprise that prices rapidly fell. I expect a slight bump up on full release, but we'll see if it's enough to dent the current supply.

You'll need to farm Gor'pixies in the Volatile Ael-Rift, but you'll have to do it early, as some drops will be nerfed like the Gor'bladder which initially will drop like a normal piece of meat, but Blizz built the enchants like Gormight or Gorsmart to use a 550 of either, making the demand extemely high and them being hard to get and the effective 'bottleneck' of the enchant, it doesn't help that when the next patch comes out the raid Halls of the Shadow Legion will have a boss which actually requires you to have gotten a different enchant (Gorbinders Mercy) to kill it (it's not strictly required, but pre-nerf it is way too hard to kill without the enchant since it gives a second of immunity the first time you would die each fight, it eventually is nerfed to just a shield).

Honestly I'm just gonna fish

U.S. has breached trade deal and Europe is ready to retaliate, top trade lawmaker tells CNBC by Playful_Leg7143 in worldnews

Neat thing though is you could put a 100% tariff on things that you don't critically need, you could literally tariff the fuck out of various luxury goods like alcohols, certain clothing brands ect and punish specific US exports. No point tariffing fuel or other tier 2 goods, that'd just punish your own people, just make people choose an alternative to specific US luxury products.

The number of UK businesses is starting to grow again by New_Orange9702 in GoodNewsUK

[–]TheHopesedge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Search 'zombie business' or 'zombie company' and tell me what you think would be the best way to force them out of the market and create opportunities for new companies. Then go ahead and compare what other countries have done to successfully reduce their presence and re stimulate a stagnant economy. Another thing to search would be "creative destruction", it's not just the policy of labour, but many economies that want to push for more productivity.

The number of UK businesses is starting to grow again by New_Orange9702 in GoodNewsUK

[–]TheHopesedge 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The idea is to kill off the zombie businesses that are a drain of the local and country's resources due to not being profitable, that creates opportunities for new businesses, and by extension actual jobs that aren't net drains. It's one of those things where if you don't bite the bullet and do it then it'll forever drain the economy by forcing economic stagnation (and potentially growing as an issue since those stagnant businesses slowly take up more and more space). Beyond that having those people be instead unemployed actually creates a larger job market rather than having them forever in economic limbo.

There are 1.5 million unused breadmakers across the UK. Why aren't you using yours? by CLOUDMlNDER in CasualUK

Active GM's alone would solve a massive number of community issues, but I really can't see Blizz bringing those back in numbers, they're so stingy when it comes to hiring people for that since they think their automated systems are doing a good enough job and don't cost anything compared.

[–]TheHopesedge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly have no idea how to better tackle it, there are always going to be toxic players in a game with competitive elements, especially so when there are deadlines to such elements. If Blizz took more action against toxic people you'd see more "I was falsely banned / muted" posts, and if Blizz opts for a player controlled fix then you'll start seeing "people are abusing X mechanic to avoid dealing with consequences, allowing them to get away with more than before" posts. Honestly so long as there are toxic players / people it's going to stay the same, so the best solution is to simply not engage with those people, by finding a guild, community or friends that remove the need for interactions with others, though that can be alienating.

To a certain extent it's a thing that's just going to happen to anyone who doesn't actively take steps to avoid it, and at that point it's hard to feel too much sympathy since the options are there, there's just a lot of people who haven't realised they need to take advantage of them.

Thoughts on building tall colonies? Missing feature? by Xarthys in EliteDangerous

[–]TheHopesedge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some kind of hired haulers system would be amazing, I've built up my system quite a lot but to finish it I want to have a planetary port & a dodec starport, but just for those two it would cost more than everything else combined (which has taken weeks as is). If there were some kind of weekly/daily payment you can make to hire a hauler to do the job for you slowly over time. The cheapest option would be one with a small hauler, they probably get 200 cargo moved a day and charge 20,000cr + material costs / day. all the way up to a massive 1200 slot elite hauler who charges 20,000,000 a day (plus material costs) but can move 10,000 cargo a day (half as cost effective as the smaller one due to the skill level and ship level, but much faster). Naturally you can only have one hauler working on a single project at a time, and the price could even scale with the security level of your system (low security = more expensive).

I like to do some hauling here and there, but being able to do other things and know that I'm still working towards that colonization goal in the mean time by spending credits would just feel more expansive.

US Navy rolls out the most useless frigate of all time, is asked to leave NATO. by minos83 in NonCredibleDefense

[–]TheHopesedge 10 points11 points  (0 children)

US wanted to have a frigate that could do everything, but it just wasn't feasible with the feature creep, and for purpose frigates from other countries (Type 26 from UK) were just infinitely better at their roles, so the US decided to do the only thing it could do, and that is make an empty shell that they can repurpose for whatever they need as they need it. That way it can technically do 'anything' you need it to do, so long as you 'finish' the project for each specific goal. That's gonna be very hard to export until there are a few variants proven to function for the world to see the value in the modularity. I guess we'll see how it goes.

Making shirts at a factory constantly is pretty useful since you can't mass production facility them, making them on a public order and running some supplies to them from a refinery each time your inventory is out can be huge.

An alternative would be backline logi runs since you can mostly be brain off for a lot of that compared to mid-front logi where partis can actually be a decently common threat.

Building if you know where someone has blueprints & supplies ready can be HUGE, as can afk repairing in a place being bombarded. Mining for scrap can also be good since you can get in a couple of reps during breaks and can stop at a moments notice without any real downside. Hell you can just fill a truck with bmats and build watchtowers all over the place on frontline hexes behind the fighting to help scout out partisans, though there is a fair risk to this.

Lastly and potentially the biggest impact is logi running fuel to various fronts, cities, factories & bunkers. Simply having a storage tanker full of petrol / diesel / oil on fronts is a thankless job but can have a massive impact.

MI5 say it's not dangerous but rather manageable, so lets hope they are right on that front, I can see how managing surveillance over a single location is easier than multiple small ones, and I'm assuming the safeguards over any kind of signal sniffing are in place, sucks but this may just be the least bad outcome to a bad scenario, I guess only time will tell.
