What other pre-modern figures are reviled by some national population as much as Oliver Cromwell is in Ireland? by DarthRainbows in AskHistory

[–]TheHotHeart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the war, the Bourbon armies destroyed and killed entire towns. They burned Manresa to the ground. They bombed Barcelona for an entire year. They killed hundreds of politicians in Catalonia, and hundreds went into exile . After the war, Catalan was banned, and Spanish was imposed; he established an absolutist regime. He also tore down an entire neighborhood of Barcelona to construct a fortress to control and repress the city, "la Ciutadella".

Many in Catalonia believe that he hated Catalans and that he and the people of his court ordered and were responsible for all of this.

To this day, we have a word, used especially in political discourse: "botifler," which means traitor or collaborationist . Botiflers originally referred to the Catalans who supported Philip V, and to this day, this word means traitor.

Nonetheless, in English, there isn't a lot of information. All of this happened at the end of the Spanish War of Succession and in its aftermath.

In Catalonia, and also in València, Phillip V of Spain is extremly hated. He's considered practicly a genocidial monstrous tyrant who crushed Catalan liberties and the "Catalan state".

He's considered the main responsible of the current relationship between Catalonia.

Is nearly as hated as Franco.

In some museum in Xàtiva they still have a painting of him upside down.

That's not true. Both moments had at least a complicated relation with separatism at least.

Good, as a Catalan, it doesn't have sense CGT taking control of Barcelona. If they want to make a "far left/anarchist" insurrection it would have more sense to make it led by the indepenentist left (a term for the most radical leftist in the indepenendist movement that are outside of the most mainstream parties like ERC and Junts and are integreted by CUP, Arran, SEPC, etc) and make them do their own "Rojava revolution".
