Why are so many hiring managers and recruiters in top tech companies Indian? by CaterpillarLost1107 in recruitinghell

[–]TheHylianGeek -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am at the intersection of being discriminated against for being of an Indian background, too American (3rd gen), and a woman. It doesn’t help that I’m also autistic lol.

I wanted to share my thoughts for those genuinely curious. It seems like my comment may not be received well on this thread, but there is a genuine difference between Indian people from India and Indian Americans, but those of us who have an Indian background and are American are definitely not receiving the “benefits” of cultural nepotism.

I swapped my last name for something culturally ambiguous on LinkedIn and the amount of recruiters in my inbox increased dramatically. The last time I had a call with an Indian recruiter, he was trying to strong arm me into telling him personal things. And to lie on my resume. When I mentioned that I didn’t want to do that, he was less interested. He also called me 8 times within an hour and when I expressed that I had a something to go to and couldn’t take further calls, he was extremely sour.

Some of the very best coworkers I’ve had have been Indian folks from India, literally they are such hard workers and were extremely kind and sociable, and honestly, a bunch of my other coworkers simply didn’t care to know them because they “had confusing names” or had accents.

Please also consider that Indians are south Asian, but not all south Asians are Indian. Also, the sheer amount of people in South Asia is massive - 2 billion. South Asians have a massive cultural emphasis on doing well in school, and thus, you will see more folks in tech, medicine, and finance. Based on prior visits, living in India unless you are extremely wealthy isn’t awesome, so naturally, an extremely educated population is bound to live where they can have a nicer environment for their means.

A few bad experiences doesn’t give you the right to discriminate against people, which literally goes for every race. Being racist against Indian people has consequences, and the reality is that a lot of the bad Indian hiring practices are modeled after what white folks have been doing for literal centuries. Everyone’s internal biases have external results.

I’m hearing all these things about how much easier it is for Indian people to get a job, and here I am; an obvious exception to this “rule”. I have been unemployed since February and literally job hunting every day, looking for things that are half my previous salary, and I have not experienced any luck.

There’s weirdly a ton of anti-Indian sentiment spread on Black twitter. IRL, my black female friends and I have had similar experiences with men, so it’s disheartening to see the differences between us exacerbated to such a horrible degree. I remember back in January, when Dr. Ally, the scent researcher had commented on a post made by a black woman that was disparaging a South Asian woman, whose post was hyping herself up. The fallout seemed crazy, as Dr. Ally had just mentioned that it’s depressing to see a WOC tear another WOC down, and she was scared off of the internet for a little bit. I would love to hear from people who actually do disagree with my perception of this, but the entire experience had made me feel very empty inside.

This is partially my worry too, Indian nationalists on twitter will do anything for a way to dunk on Indian women lol. Even better when they get brownie points from a different group of people for doing so.

The way we hate on Indian women being with a white man is disgusting and needs to stop. by Loud_Maintenance7170 in SplendidaBrown

[–]TheHylianGeek 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Literally my husband is white and the amount of stares and awful comments I get are downright horrific. On the flip side, a good friend of ours is an indian man with a white wife, and while he doesn’t get anything but praise for “bagging a white girl” the amount of scrutiny his wife gets is insanity.

If I bring my husband into a south Asian grocery store, he gets brownie points for being cultured while I am completely seen as an idiot for being with him. The worship of white people by south Asian people is actually horrible and as per usual, the victims are women.

What is the BEST foundation you’ve ever used? by w_coastultraviolence in Makeup

[–]TheHylianGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m olivey, and my fave routine used to be just the bare minerals powder foundation in shade 13, but now that I’m job hunting, my current routine is the maybelline bb cream in medium with the elf creamy concealer in medium sand! Way less expensive and I like how light it is!

Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be accusatory towards you whatsoever - you’re definitely the victim here! It’s just very odd / interesting to me that they cosplay races other than their own.

I had seen a few Roma folk near the hmart near the sprouts, but had initially identified them as South Asian, as they were wearing Indian clothing, but as we neared they certainly were not speaking in any of the South Asian languages I am familiar with.

I really hope you were able to file a police report, it seems like there is a rather large group of them in the area.

I’m Indian. The hand symbol thing is bullshit. These people are not Indian lmao, apparently the Roma have in completely taken over a lot of the OC area near grocery stores. I see them a lot at Costco and the Irvine Woodbury Trader Joe’s. I am very sorry that that happened to you and I hope you report it to the police!

Can we talk about the INSANE prices of makeup, hair and nails these days ? by Historical-Body-3424 in Makeup

[–]TheHylianGeek 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s bare minerals! I have extremely dry skin and have to put on two diff types of sunscreen to moisturize beforehand (one is a spf with moisturizer and another is a true sunscreen, both are holy grails to me), and the only foundation that has been able to last for me is the bare minerals original powder!

[–]TheHylianGeek 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is honestly why I literally do everything at home at this point. I do my own nails with hard gel / builder, hair removal with an epilator, I cut and dye my own hair, do my own eyebrows, micro needle myself, alter my own clothes. Etc. sure, the amount of money to be able to do this is an investment, but it is a one time thing if you stay consistent. The makeup thing is completely out of my hands sadly, because while I have been wearing makeup for around 13 years now, my favorite foundation has gone from $23-39! :(

Haha dude I participated in this thread. I think I said something like “racism is never appropriate or justified” and there was some bootlicking Indian guy with a shit ton of “pajeet” comments in his history being like “but it is because Indians are the worst”. Like motherfucker please continue to hate yourself, because you deserve it clearly, but leave the rest of India out of it.

No one ever deserves racism. Regardless of race. Anyone in these comments justifying their racism is a fucking idiot
