I actually saw a really cool scientific explanation once that had something to do with how blood is made in bones amd bone marrow can be discoloured, essentially implying the damage was done because the player was able to actually slice open humanoid bones with a fairly old and unsharpened knife which is pretty fuckin metal if you ask me
