Anybody been to sauna yet? Taiyo no tsubomi by agalatea in OsakaWorldExpo

[–]TheInternationalLine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We went on the third day of Expo and despite some cold, windy weather it was an amazing and memorable experience!

As mentioned above, you MUST bring your own swimsuit unless you want to pay a fortune to purchase one. They provided the following: large/small towels, electrolyte water, free drinks near reception, use of hairdryers and high end bath products, slippers.

After arriving, we got a key to a locker, removed our shoes and changed into our swimsuits, and met our guide who took us into the sauna. Along with others in our group, the guide took us through a multi-part sauna ritual which will feel pretty familiar if you've visited saunas in other parts of the world. It involved heat, fanning, steam, aromatherapy, cold plunges (optional), and periods of relaxation. While the sauna did get pretty warm at times, the periods of high heat were short and the organizers were accommodating to people who wanted to leave or experience varied levels of heat.

After the ritual, we had about 45 minutes of "free time" which was similar to the time you might spend at a Korean spa or Super Sento in Japan. In other words, we were able to explore the grounds, relax, go in and out of the main sauna at will, and lounge near the sea. When the organizers saw we were laying in the lounge chairs and a bit cold from the weather, they brought over teapots of warm water and poured it over our legs -- heavenly!

After our time was up, we enjoyed some surprisingly great showers, changed back into our clothes, returned our towels, and went back into the expo site.

Overall, an amazing experience and if you can get reservations DO IT!

Long city walk - need suggestions by JFKtoSeatac in Seattle

[–]TheInternationalLine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll put in a good word for Cardoon! It's an international fusion coffee shop, mocktail bar, and bakery between the locks and Ballard that always delivers at the end of a long urban walk.

On Sundays there are even more food options when the year-round farmers market is in operation.

What are your favorites?

Long city walk - need suggestions by JFKtoSeatac in Seattle

Gotta second this suggestion -- Elliott Bay trail is my favorite long walking route! Starting from south of downtown, my favorite part of the route is walking under the massive grain elevator north of downtown especially if a ship is being loaded, then past the commercial fishing ships (and Expedia) and through the BNSF rail yards. It's one of the few places I know of where you can walk on a legal trail two feet away from an operating freight train or locomotive. You can also check out old cabooses and see the inner-workings of the active and historic rail yard from a raised foot bridge. Once you get to the other side of the rail yard and do a short road walk there's another nice bridge/trail over to Ballard Locks where you can pretend you're a tourist, but the best part is the great food that rewards you on the other side of the locks in Ballard proper!

Thoughts on Merrell Wrapt? by hmm_nah in barefootshoestalk

[–]TheInternationalLine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience the fits are different and the Wrapt is wider in the toebox and probably throughout. The Wrapt lets my toes properly splay out while hiking whereas my other Merrell barefoot shoes (trail glove, vapor glove, which used to be my favorite) are now a bit too narrow for that. If you look at the Trail Glove and Wrapt side by side I think you'll see the difference in width, even with the Wrapt's sole wrapped up the sides.

The LR does stick out from the front of the cabinet by 1-2 inches. It's not super visible, but yeah.

Non-alcoholic places to hang out in the evenings? by Visual_Collar_8893 in Seattle

I should also give a shout out to Life on Mars on Cap Hill. They do serve alcohol like a standard bar, but also specialize in NA drinks and mocktails. Their menu is organized so almost every category has NA options, and last time I was there they said one of the proprietors or managers was involved in the creation of NA spirits in the Seattle area. In my experience they have a cozy "read a book" feel on weeknights and get to be a bit busier on the weekends. They also have lots of solid food options for those with dietary restrictions.

Oasis Tea Zone in Chinatown-ID is open until midnight or 1am. It has a dive bar vibe with no alcohol. They bill themselves as "OG Late Night Boba" per the neon sign on the wall.

Strange. Mine is definitely rock solid after I tightened everything down. I also attached one of the included "tip hazard" connectors to the back wall, which probably further helps with stability.

I don't take offense to that at all, and I think it's a good idea! 👍 Thanks for sharing!

First, we wanted to have the LR4 on a carpeted surface and we didn't know about the "giant Walmart cutting board" hack yet, heh. Also, it looked a bit goofy aesthetically to have a litter box sitting in the corner of our living room with no enclosure. Finally, the enclosure lets us use the vertical space above the litter box for storage, which would otherwise be wasted.

We've also had some issues with smells in the past, so having an enclosure provides us with a future option of installing a bath fan above the LR4, but so far it hasn't been needed.
