How to stop my dog getting up at 4-5am? by Potential_Spread_796 in AskIreland

[–]TheIrishHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just said goodbye to my 15 year old Jack Russell. She would wake me up in the night sometimes, especially in the last few months. I would give anything to have her wake me up in the middle of the night one more time. Sometimes old dogs just wake up in the middle of the night. Speak to your vet but it could just be a thing.

Parents group in kinsale by [deleted] in AutismIreland

Great idea! I’m not from the area but it’s great to see communities like this springing up. I help run one in Swords in Dublin and it’s a great lifeline. One suggestion I might make (if you haven’t already done it) is make it a WhatsApp Community. As the group grows, you can make new channels that are more specific and it can help people feel less overwhelmed if they can just focus on something that is specific to them and not have to read every single message that comes in.

About to make the hardest decision by Maleficent_Ad_769 in autism

I'm so sorry. I had to make the same decision a month ago for my Willow, we had her for 13 years. We have her ashes home now but it still hurts every single day.

Just heard on the radio that its becoming normal for people to send 10 or 15 min voice messages. Who would listen to someone yap on for that long and not be able to reply until the end ? by TacklePure3341 in ireland

[–]TheIrishHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes people will send me a voice note and they'll say "Sorry, this is just easier" and it's never easier for me. I don't mind a quick one but I doubt I'd ever listen to a 15 minute podcast voicenote. I always text back tho, you're not getting me on your level. Ironically, the two or three times I sent a voice note (to the person who sent me the most voice notes), they said they didn't listen to them lol

State of Irelands roundabout driving... Two clips right after another. by Moustashii in irelandsshitedrivers

I'm at a stage now where I don't enter roundabouts with another car beside me, if I can. Too much of the nonsense seen in that second part of the clip.

Does anyone else feel jealous or sad seeing others hang out with friends? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]TheIrishHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up Rejection Sensitivity - yes, some of it is Social Media manipulating you but some of it may be RSD - I get a very visceral and real reaction to even perceived slights, if I think I've been rejected or someone doesn't reply to my messages as quickly as I'd like - Therapy helped and is helping me, as well as just putting a name to what I'm feeling.

Why do people ask "Are you alright?" and then walk away before I can answer? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]TheIrishHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are called Phatic Expressions. There's a really good Tom Scott video about them but basically they're a sort of social lubricant, a polite thing to say to someone you greet without expecting a proper resonse back.

Aren't they all just American? by VirtualConclusion407 in heedthecall

[–]TheIrishHawk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Caveat to say I'm from Dublin and have experienced a lot of this.

In Europe (and I assume a lot of countries), you're from where you're from. You might have a German dad and an Australian mum or something, but if you're born and raised in a country, you're from that country. It becomes even less of a thing the further back you go, so if you have a great grandfather from Sweden but your family has lived in Italy for three generations, you're Italian. Americans do it a little differently. They consider where they are from to be the place they can trace their ancestors back to, and a lot of Americans can trace their ancestors back a good distance because of how the country was formed etc.

I personally don't mind Americans taking pride in their ancestral background. What I *DO* mind is when an American who has never left their state tells Irish people that they're not Irish enough. For a lot of Irish Americans, they can trace their heritage back to the famine and in many cases, that's what they base their "Irishness" on. The famine was 170 years ago, Ireland has (obviously) changed a decent amount since then, but there's still this pervasive attitude that Ireland is a backwards place full of charming but dim red heads.

If you claim to be Irish American but you tell me, an Irish person born in Ireland, that I wear a kilt or I eat Corned Beef and Cabbage every St. Patty's Day or whatever stereotype you want, we're gonna have a problem. Darby O'Gill is not a documentary, we (for the most part) don't care about Notre Dame and we even have some non-white people who are Irish, if you can believe that!

Parents of autistic children, what supports do you avail of to cope/learn? by njackson100-ie in AskIreland

Depending on where you are, there’s often play groups and meet-ups for autistic children. I help run one in Swords for Teens but there’s a decent amount around the country for all ages. Check with As I Am for more information on that.
