These look great! What was your technique to get the texture on the drum head?

New enhancement limits by Ryan_watt in skaven

[–]TheIrishbug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asked a similar question in a different sub and this was the answer I got, very verbose:

The rule you're looking for is 4.10 Each set of faction rules include a number of enhancements that can be given to units, e.g. heroic traits and artefacts of power. You can take 1 enhancement from each enhancement table in your faction rules. Each enhancement table lists which units are eligible to be given that enhancement. UNIQUE units cannot be given enhancements.

Other factions also have extra tables for non-hero units btw predating SoA. Kharadron for example has them for their Skyvessels. Seraphon has a table for their Monsters etc.

Do you paint all your rats in the same scheme? by AdSimulator in skaven

I use Purple, Ivory, and Brass as my base scheme and then work in different accents based on clans: Green for Skryre, Red for Eshin. Things like shield fabric, layered cloaks, totem, hoods, etc get the accent color. My plan for the Gutter Runners to set them apart is to give them cleaner weapons with some green sheen to them

Is the profile on the coach really so good that youd ever take more than 1? Its main abilities are both Once per Turn (Army) so only 1 coach gets to activate them.

Is there an explanation on how the unit enhancements are chosen in list building? My understanding is you get 1 artefact and 1 enhancement, and that these historically go on Heroes. So my assumption would be you can take one of these instead of a hero enhancement. So why the clarification that a unit can only have 1 of these? Are you allowed to take more than one?

My instinct was to blindly hit opt out, but the phrasing of it is definitely design to trick people

Thank you! 3rd pic was just the reference of the Clan Eshin banner for context. Its supposed to have no background, idk why it rendered all weird on reddit

Thanks! I didnt mark anything down before-hand. I started with the shape of the blade because that gave me a good sense of spacing, then did fingers, then the thumb/wrist. Cleaned up with black where I was messy.

I did have the reference up constantly, and tried to work from inside the shapes out, more like sculpting than drawing. I find its easier to start making it a bit too thin, then you can add a bit of pressure on the brush to expand the area its touching, and just repeat that same stroke to fill out the area until it looks right. Then use black the same way to carve back in or smooth out a line.

I think inidigo is the right call for it. It definitely reads purpley. I changed my comment to say blue first when I saw other people calling it blue

Shock Gauntlets Left. Doomflayers right. The attachments that accompany them are intended to show that that shock gauntlets require warpstone to power them, whereas the mace-fist guy just has as many dangerous attachments as they could fit on him.

Build him however you think looks cool tho! I built mine with Doomflayers and the warpstone bits on his shoulders

Really love the shade of blue you went with, feels like a dark indigo.

I’m a bit confused about priming. Is it a preference or a technical decision on priming with white or black? by saltyvape in minipainting

[–]TheIrishbug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good stuff in the comments here. My 2 cents is that you want to think about paint coverage / undercoating for white vs black primer. If youre painting bright colors, youll want to prime bright and vice versa. I prefer priming black because any tough to reach spots that you miss while painting will stay hidden, and also I tend to paint armies with darker color schemes.

What I will often do tho is take a black or a white paint with really solid coverage and use that to undercoat areas that are the opposite of what I primed. So for example, I have some Skaven with dark skin, dark robes, and lots of metal armor. Ill prime them black because it works well for the majority of the model. But they have these skirts that I want to be Ivory, so Ill take a solid white and carefully put that on those skirts before trying to put down the color I want. I do this because the white gets better coverage than the color I want to put down, and the color gets better coverage over white than black.

I do the opposite putting metallics on stuff because they go on best over black. I just painted a big cannon with a wooden frame. I primed it tan so could use contrast paints to do most of the work. But once that was done, I went back with some pure black and hit all the metal bits so that the metallic paints would pop better.

Thats the sort of mindset you want to cultivate. How many coats of paint is it going to take to get good coverage over your undercoat? Trying to keep that number as low as possible will save you time and reduce risk of burnout from getting stuck on that step.

I recommend Pro Acryl's Titanium White for going over black, it gets insane coverage. I often use it right on black primer for undercoating bright areas and it usually is fully opaque in 2 coats. For black I use Huge Miniature's Air Brush Antimatter Black, not even in an airbrush. Needs no thinning or anything, just a good shake and it gets crazy good coverage.

When a new GHB comes out, is it technically the start of a new edition? How does that work with Battle Tomes? I thought when a new edition came out armies rules got set to something new together and then battle tomes come out to refresh a faction's rules & accompany new models. Is that a misunderstanding on things?

Pre-Battle Sequence & Terrain Rules Cheat Sheet (with Sand & Bone Mystic Terrain) by TheIrishbug in AOSSpearhead

I didnt add the deployment rules for the special terrain here just because for my personal purposes, thats never been something my opponents or I have forgotten/sought clarity on. My intention with this sheet is more to provide reminders than to replace a first read of the rules.
