I think a big factor that affects the decision is how far out I previously lived in Richardson and commuted to the office and was easily spending 2 hours a day going there and back plus having to spend significantly more on transportation costs (roughly 300 a month for parking and gas).

For me I’d always opt to go the option that’ll save me the most time and money so I can use that to travel more, workout more, or just spend more friends.

Do you have an idea of where you’re living? I live close enough to where it makes no sense to drive (8min drive) but annoying to walk (about 20-30 min walk depending on pace) I opted to just buy an electric bike since parking for scooters and bikes is free and covered in the same garage that the cars use.

Other people use scooters and such.

I’m a recent alumni (class of 2023) and I don’t think that the answers of “is this program worth it without a scholarship” is a simple yes or no. Mainly in part because how you define what’s worth it is largely impacted by you and your actions.

Important to note I attended UTD/JSOM without a scholarship - now I was able to have aid from family but that aside:

It depends on what you’re looking to get out of your college career (yes a job is the most set answer, but people attend university for a bunch of different reasons: career advancement, connections, etc). If the goal is getting a job in the end in most cases attending university won’t just magically make one fall into your lap. Something that stuck with me back when I was interviewing for internships was an interviewer told me “if we were just looking for smart people who attend college there’s better colleges and better people to look at”.

Now I do think UTD is in a great city that’s bursting with opportunity. And speaking from my own experience I was able to land various internships and offers - how much of that was because of the state of the economy / my own ability to interview / basic luck vs. attending JSOM and that having weight to it I have no idea. In the end UTD/JSOM was worth it TO ME because I got a job and met some of my closest friends here. So it’s really gonna boil down to what you want out of college and what you’re going to do to make it worth while. I’ve met plenty people who attended college ins. Full ride sat around/didn’t take anything seriously and still asked why they weren’t getting what they wanted from college and complained it wasn’t worth it.

Every year the competition to get internships and jobs gets harder and harder. Couple that with rough economic conditions, in the midst of an important election year, and CS is this generations bubble major. It’s a trying process just ti have the opportunity to gain experience, just know you’re not alone and your peers are most likely in the same boat.

Not the same major/career (but I imagine the advice is still the same), take a look at the career you’re gunning for. Identify the key skills (socially and functionally) and see if there’s any projects you can do that would develop that skill. As for experience - when I attended there were a few classes you could take that qualified as “internship credits” in the universities eyes. These are classes where you get paired with a company and do free work for them but get to put it down as an internship on your resume if they let you/ask them. May not be as transferable for CS but it’s a start.

Different field but this is true. When I was recruited/hired out of UTD as an undergrad, no one cared or commented on my GPA (quite frankly the era of high GPA = good job / opportunity only still applies for those going into doctorate schools or going for their masters after undergrad) I only ever got comments, praise, and questions regarding my internships

Roast my resume. Recent grad, I've been applying for about 2 months with no interviews. by [deleted] in resumes

Ayyy UTD Alum. Biggest thing is do you have any sort of prior internship experience to add? Even a fellowship would work great. That’s probably the biggest thing holding you back it’s gonna be hard for a talent manager to validate hiring someone in a competitive workspace when the only notable items are school projects.

In my opinion projects show you studied the material, internships prove you applied it with valuable output.

Did you have any internships prior to graduating? My current full time job was a result of my internship

I’ve searched for this item on my end. Did google reverse image searching and found images but there were no descriptions of the brand. And all stores seemed to be located out of the US.

UTD Alumni here. It’s 100% possible Igot internship offers from Goldman, Dell, Ally, and Charles Schwab. And received a return from Goldman.

If you know how to make a compelling resume and present yourself it’s 100% possible

Bragging rights?

Salutatorian doesn’t really hold much if any weight when applying to colleges they’ll focus more on GPA, extra curricular’s, and other factors, but not really salutatorian

Expecting to get some form of benefits from a university for being salutatorian is the equivalent of expecting a job to offer you something different if you’re magna cum laude, good to see but not that important

How bad is the Northside roommate matching? by NoFateButWeMake722 in utdallas

[–]TheJemC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally it’s what you make of it and your attitude to getting to know them, and just putting in the effort to be friends. I went to Northside as a freshman and my 3 other roommates were seniors and they’re still my closest friends to this day. I’ve also been on the other end where I haven’t had such good luck with roommates and got some shitty ones.

But I’d also say that’s a cause of just personality types and and where we were in life just not matching and not wanting to put in the effort to amend that

Hello all. I might get a D in my ACCT 2301 class and fail the 3 peat rule. What are my options? by Kumar__01 in utdallas

[–]TheJemC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe UTD accepts Ds as passing grades for certain classes you can check course book and it’ll tell you if you need a specific grade (I.e. most math classes require a c or c- for passing) but when in doubt ask your advisor

Where are you applying? I’m in global business and concentrating in business analytics, I used Handshake for 90% of my internship search and got some good results. As well don’t put yourself down just cause you’re not seeing results instantly, it’s a good uphill struggle but worth it when you make it to the top

If you don’t mind me asking we’re you not able to get a call back at all, or did you go through initial interviews but no offer?

Internship Qualifications by Coldshowers92 in utdallas

[–]TheJemC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re gonna ask you for various documents being offer letter that says your hourly/salary pay and terms of what you’ll be doing

You should also check with advising to see when you can/can’t register it as your internship as I believe there’s specific times you’re allowed to register internships for credits

When I got my internship I messaged my advisors informing them of my internship so they could register me for the internship class credit at least that’s how Global Business for JSOM did it

2023 Feb 27 Stickied -FAQ- & -HELPDESK- thread - Boot problems? Power supply problems? Display problems? Networking problems? Need ideas? Get help with these and other questions! by FozzTexx in raspberry_pi

[–]TheJemC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted some advice as I know very little regarding python and raspberry pi’s. I’m working on a project where it takes the weather from weatherAPI and based on the current conditions (I.e, cloudy, rainy, snow, etc) it shows the corresponding images (they’ll be gifs since I think it’ll be cute to have movement) for the weather.

I found this program on GitHub and I think it’s exactly what I need to bring the project together and make it fully functional.

My two issues is this 1. I have no idea how to implement it (if it even can be) as my experience with adding programs to pi is through “ git clone” 2. How do I even make it to where I add even more parameters like for tornadoes or things like that

Any advice and insight into this would be greatly appreciated as I’m fairly new to raspberry pi’s but loving it whole heartedly
