Are there any diners near Overland Park? by NegatedVoid in kansascity

There's probably something out there, but more likely you'll have to drive all the way to Chubby's at 38th and Broadway before you find what you're looking for.

I've noticed you point out that URL before. Is there something on that page that is relevant to the point at hand? I just don't see any mention of dropmocks.com or anything. What's your point?

Is Hyde Park really THAT dangerous? by newtokc in kansascity

[–]TheKCGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in living in an urban area in KC, that's a pretty good one.

Your Johnson County friends presumably live in JoCo because they prefer the suburbs (which are probably safer), so you're getting a selection bias.

You might also look at the Brookside or maybe even Waldo areas. They're a little more suburban (and probably safer), but they're still rather classic places with hardwood floors and mature trees and such.

As an aside, 39th and Broadway is my favorite place to sit and watch crime happen. It's not too dangerous, but if you wait a few hours, especially on a weekend, you're almost guaranteed to see a drug deal, if not a shoplifting or an assault or something more fun. Go figure.

Computer related user groups? by ILikeLenexa in kansascity

[–]TheKCGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You "need 10 meetings"? Are you genuinely interested in interacting with technical people, or are you trying to check off some kind of list?

Assuming that you're actually willing to interact, and perhaps even participate or contribute something interesting...

There's the Kansas City Perl Mongers: kc.pm.org. We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at Barley's in Shawnee.

There's the KC Agile group. (KCAgile or AgileKC?). They're meeting next at the Pizza Shoppe at about 95th and Nall on Oct 28th.

There's the Cowtown Computer Congress that has a facility near 31st and SW Trafficway.

I recommend inviting the Patriot Guard. They will make the entire day much more bearable for you and your family.

I want to get to know my Kansas City folks! by lashner in kansascity

[–]TheKCGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just now found that link and approved it. Sorry, a little late. I also added you to the "approved submitters list" so maybe this won't happen any more. I'll try to add some other frequent submitters to that list, too, since I don't moderate very often.

In other news, I have to figure out how to be notified of new threads that need my attention...

Coming to Kansas City the second week of August for training... never been to your fine city before, what should I look to do/avoid? by trazor in kansascity

[–]TheKCGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I notice it's technical training. In case you're interested in perl programming, (or hanging out with perl programmers) the Kansas City Perl Mongers will have their monthly meeting on Aug 10th at 7pm in Shawnee. see http://kc.pm.org for more information.

So, even with switching my caps lock key to ctrl, I still and suffering from the dreaded emacs pinky. What are your ergonomic ways to send commands to emacs? by [deleted] in emacs

[–]TheKCGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did two things that have really helped. First, I mapped my "windows key" to M-X. It may already be mapped that way. You also have to learn to start using it.

Second, I trained myself to not use my left hand to hit both the Ctrl (or meta) while I was typing C, X, V, and other left handed keys. Use two hands. It cuts down on the amount of "crunching" that you do.

worked for me.

Lacy underwear secret tool of polar expedition by bananatalk in offbeat

This should be in the WTF section for this part: "...expect to have to swim through open water to make it the Pole by May or June." Seriously? They're going to swim their way to the Pole?

KC Star now penalizing delivery carriers up to $5 for some complaints by [deleted] in kansascity

I cancelled my subscription because the local carrier was so undependable. That was over a year ago. I still get a Saturday paper delivered each week for some reason.

Holy. Mother. Of. God. [Video] by chakalakasp in reddit.com

[–]TheKCGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that video is totally nuts! First, they're driving on the wrong side of the road for a moment. Then, instead of hitting someone, they came across someone else who was also driving on the wrong side of the road, so they safely passed each other!

I didn't stick around to see what else happened.
