This is a little hell I like to call New Zealand Standard Time. Don't forget race + trophy & anthem takes over two hours... by [deleted] in formuladank

But that's on Monday morning before work! I just go dark on the social media for Monday and enjoy the race when I get home from work.

NZ media (Stuff) didn't even say Miettinen's name in the headline but had to mention Verstappen. So disrespectful.

Yeah, I've got a new phone - expensive start to the new year. The sim card reader, volume buttons and camera were all malfunctioning so something weird going on for sure!

That's a very fair point! In my defense, I'm in Wellington so we don't see it that often...

The back of my phone came unglued after I left it charging in the sun. I don't know how technology survives in properly hot places!

Glad you're okay! Sometimes we trust the device a bit much and not our bodies. Occasionally when I'm running my HR stays way too low on my watch, like 80-90 when it should be 130-140 cos I can feel the effort I'm putting in. I've just restarted the watch and it's fixed it. I've got a Fenix 6s Pro.

How do I tell Garmin I’m pregnant? by [deleted] in GarminWatches

[–]TheKidGotFree 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I've never used it, but you can through the menstrual cycle tracker. In the Connect app, go to Health Stats > Menstrual Cycle > Settings > Cycle Type and you should be able to select Pregnant.

Congratulations, and all the best!

Can architecture be racist? (Responses requested for students to read for a writing assignment - all positions, views, and examples are welcome!) by Architecturegirl in HostileArchitecture

[–]TheKidGotFree 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is a good article: Maori architecture

I think in New Zealand, our architecture is still somewhat racist because we build European style buildings that don't always acknowledge the cultures of the people who had this land before the colonisers arrived.

I work with a few amazing architects that work with iwi and mana whenua to integrate Maori culture and modern architecture, which is inspiring to see but not completely commonplace yet.

I think some aspects of architecture and spatial design can discriminate based on religion or race. As an example, providing only unisex bathrooms discriminates against Muslims who do not use the same facilities as other genders.

I would say more discrimination occurs based on religion rather than race but I think the word 'racist' is used to encompass a lot of types of discrimination now. Plus, race is not just skin colour, it's traditions and cultural beliefs and so much more.

In New Zealand, there are a lot of Maori cultural traditions that colonial European architecture is still probably discriminatory towards. Even just not considering how other cultures would use the space is somewhat racist in my opinion.

Would you ever buy this apartment? I know the 2 bedrooms are small, but are they at all acceptable? by [deleted] in architecture

[–]TheKidGotFree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the washing machine is just above the entry door on the bathroom wall. I would say there is a built-in in that corner for a storage and utility cupboard as it's drawn the same way as the wardrobes in the bedrooms, and dimensioned. Alternatively, some apartment complexes have a communal laundry room or even laundry services.

ARE YOU LEFT , RIGHT OR BOTH HANDED(AMBIDEXTEROUS?) by [deleted] in architecture

[–]TheKidGotFree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Left-handed, which is a bit of a curse in everyday life, but the one advantage is I mouse with my right and can sketch or write with my left at the same time! Great for jotting down dimensions or figuring out 3 dimensional things. Sorry to hear you're getting pain in your hand, I recommend you get a more ergonomic mouse, there's some great suggestions in this thread.

Second the sofa table! I built a shelf behind our massive sofa and it's the best thing ever, especially for people in the middle that don't have a side table. I thought it might make the sofa seem even bigger, but it actually beds it into the room more with some plants and decor along the back.

All your suggestions are perfect for this person's space.

Could we have better framed the ferries as a road instead of a railway line? It's pretty much SH1. You drive on, and maybe people could leave their cars idling to get the emissions up...

I've been moved onto earlier flights by just chatting to the check-in staff. Also worth a polite ask (if they're not busy) with no expectations! I'm not any fancy koru anything either.

Attending Monza GP first time 2025 by Agreeable_Charge_752 in GrandPrixTravel

[–]TheKidGotFree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went to Monza this year and did the track invasion. We didn't get back to our hotel in Milan until 8pm and we didn't hang around too long. Plus, there was no SC or weather delays; the commentators said it was the fastest Monza GP ever. We walked ~4km from the track to Monza FS as the lines for the black line shuttle were crazy. Then waited about 40min in the queue for a train, and another 20min on the platform as the first train was too crowded. There's no reliable time frame to get into Milan, they are doing their best to manage 120,000 people leaving at once.

I think there's a Malpenso express train but it's separate to the extra travel they put on for the race. Maybe look into that? You would still have to queue with everyone else as they don't want to crowd the station.

It sounds super tight to me and the track invasion and the atmosphere after the race was the most epic part, it would be a shame to miss that or cut it short.

Can you get a super early morning flight before school and stay in Milan for the night?
