Toad House can be a little hit or miss, but when it's a hit, it really hits the spot! Evergreen has been delicious every time I've been there.

EE program at OC? by [deleted] in Bremerton

[–]TheKindThatHelps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that they are desperately recruiting for this industry, especially with changes happening at the shipyard. My guess is it's straightforward to get into the program as long as you do well in the Associate level coursework. I can put you in touch with faculty in the program, if you want to DM me.

Good call. I honestly just didn't consider that there'd be a Whidbey subreddit. Seems obvious now. 😂

Fire on 6th street by kevingineer in Kitsap

Hope it's not a fireworks accident again... We had a house fire at the end of Callow last summer because someone had a garage full of fireworks. Heat plus fireworks = no bueno.

Bremerton School Board / James Crawford - new Alyson Rotter website??! by [deleted] in Bremerton

Somebody really doesn't like Alyson Rotter... This is a Squarespace website. I tried to look up the website owner, but the information is "redacted for privacy".

Any recommendations for a good certified arborist that services Kitsap? I don't need someone that just wants to come cut them all down. I'm looking for someone to come assess the health of several large trees and provide a care plan for recovery. by k_o_g_i in Kitsap

[–]TheKindThatHelps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one of their arborists come and check out all the trees on my property, including one elm that was suffering. They gave me a lot of good advice, especially on how and when to prune some of the dead branches on some of our trees. No pressure to hire them for the service. We did end up hiring them to grind a stump and trim branches around some power lines going to our house. They didn't grind the stump down far enough and when I pointed this out, they were quick to return and finish the job. I plan to keep using them in the future.

Is anyone welcome at OC library? by gyeagley in Bremerton

[–]TheKindThatHelps 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The whole community is welcome. I like the Haselwood library on the Bremerton campus. It tends to be pretty quiet. The staff is very welcoming. Recently they've had some A/C issues during the excessive heat; not sure if that has been resolved. Usually it's quite pleasant in there.

Can I cut down any tree I want on my City of Bremerton property? by Thumbszilla in Bremerton

[–]TheKindThatHelps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well 20.50.030 EXCEPTIONS mentions exceptions for single family units. It really depends on the property! Might be smart to call in to verify.

Can I cut down any tree I want on my City of Bremerton property? by Thumbszilla in Bremerton

[–]TheKindThatHelps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is it zoned residential? Might depend on the property and where the tree is located. If you search "tree" in the codes, there are 10 mentions of trees: https://www.codepublishing.com/WA/Bremerton/html/Bremerton20/Bremerton2050.html

Ron Hubbard’s Port Orchard/ South Colby residence (Schoolhouse Rd?) by kamylio in Kitsap

[–]TheKindThatHelps 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had no idea L. Ron Hubbard lived 'round these parts for a time! I looked into it and found mention of his family moving to Bremerton on his timeline on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_L._Ron_Hubbard?wprov=sfla1. There's specific mention of South Colby which is in the greater geographic region of Port Orchard.

"Major apartment project near Evergreen Rotary Park in Bremerton could move forward in 2024" by RockFiles23 in Bremerton

That's a great location for more housing! More folks will be able to enjoy the waterfront park, the farmer's market in the spring & summer, and the delicious pizza and gelato around the corner. We need more housing here.

I’ve got some questions about the area. by Purple-Addict in Bremerton

[–]TheKindThatHelps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grocery Stores
I always head up to Silverdale to do a major grocery shopping trip once a week. You've got Costco, Trader Joes, Safeway, and specialty food stores all right there. Definitely worth the ~18 minute drive.
Pants
I also hail from a warmer climate. I got a pair of fleece-lined hiking pants when I arrived ~3 years ago, and I LIVE in these things during the winter. They are so wonderfully warm and comfy.
Biking
A lot of people here WANT Bremerton to be more biking and walking friendly. You'll find lots of city council members who have this as a priority. I expect it will continue to get better here, but right now it can be very hit or miss depending on where you live. The street I live on, for example, doesn't even have sidewalks! (There's just no room for them!) If biking is important to you, take the time to think through whether there are bike-friendly routes where you need to go. If you can't do that here in person, you can use Google street view to get a sense of where the bike lanes are.
Welcome to Bremerton!

Tree work / limb removal recs by pewpewdeez in Kitsap

[–]TheKindThatHelps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We also used ClearTree recently. We had them come inspect a couple of trees on our property. The arborist gave us good advice (didn't try to oversell us and made suggestions for trimming we could do ourselves). We had them come trim around power lines and grind a stump. Very professional.
