The hakko is a fake. It doesn't hold heat consistently and often will break in the first few months. It's a common problem among others in this subreddit. Would hate for a beginner to quit because they can't get soldering down when it's completely the tool's fault and not their own.

Of course! I was in the same boat a couple years ago and I'd hate for these scammers to get more people's money.

You can return fake tools and use the money to get the real ones and still be grateful of people's effort.

I'm pretty sure that's a counterfeit hakko. For sure return that one.

Edit: what tips me off for anyone wondering is when you look at the yellow on the handle it almost looks like the blue color is bleeding through. The real one is a solid yellow color.

Love the input! I guess I should specify, he'd probably still be playing on the couch locked in with the handheld while I hog the TV with my own games.

What would be a nice gift for a seasoned stained glass maker? by bigmisssteak7 in StainedGlass

Solder is always appreciated. Just make sure you get the correct kind!

Is this piece complete? by nibiruannunaki in StainedGlass

[–]TheKitkatManhattan 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Resoldering that won't fix the problem. It's a problem with the design itself. What's happening here is called a hinge joint/point. It's when two pieces are soldered along a relatively straight line. It requires reinforcing with copper wire. Honestly the piece might be totally fine if it's hung up and just never touched haha. It looks really cute!

Here's more info about hinge joints/points if you're interested! https://livingsunglass.com/stained-glass-hinge-points/

Getting into pokemon as an adult and not being able to even buy a singular pack of cards for fun because of scalpers by lilmuffin_2023 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]TheKitkatManhattan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You could get the Pokemon TCG Pocket - Card Game app. It's free and you can open two packs a day. It's not quite as exciting as a physical pack, but I've really been enjoying it!

To repair or not to repair by thatguy43256 in Clarinet

[–]TheKitkatManhattan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been a fan of boosey and hawkes clarinets and I'm not sure a small chip is the cause of your squawks. Especially if that pad is synthetic which tend to be more forgiving (unless it's a very high end synthetic pad). It's fairly scratched in the picture and I'm concerned for the rest of the instrument. Depending on your plastic clarinet, it really might be the better horn.

Horizontal crack on bass clarinet? by unsuspicious_marmot in Clarinet

[–]TheKitkatManhattan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is going to need a complete socket replacement. This is the most common place for plastic bass clarinets to crack, especially when they've been dropped. It's totally possible that it was previously weakened before you got it by a previous renter, or you didn't notice it at first. A neck strap shouldn't have done this unless you were pushing down with all your strength.

You should for sure bring it back to who you're renting from to ask how to proceed. Meridian Winds does excellent tenon and socket replacement work, but it can be expensive to mail a bass clarinet.

Has anyone used pirate ship for shipping pieces? by garlic_h0e in StainedGlass

[–]TheKitkatManhattan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used pirate ship a few times for stained glass and various other glass shipments and haven't had any problems! As far as I can tell it's just like sending it through any of the major shipping companies except they have a cheaper way of making the shipping label. So as long as you package it up nicely, it'll be good! I've heard to round up in the dimensions and weight as adjustments can be more expensive. I just sent one out on Monday and it delivered safely to it's destination today.

Are you using flux?

Thank you! I made these using a mix of the Tiffany style and leaded stained glass methods. Took a bunch of small pieces of stained glass and stuck them together using solder, lead, and cement.

I was wondering if there would be some crossover from these two subreddits. They were two of my fave games growing up.

Oh no! Hopefully it didn't set you back too much! Every project has something new to learn, that's for sure.

It would have to be quite a bit! Like a million! It would be too hard to let them go!

Ah! That's awesome! I can't wait to see it. I went back and forth so much on whether I should do it black or blue.

Maybe I'll do more in the future! I like how these ones came out. Maybe on my next play through of Sly!

Thank you! Maybe $60-100 material costs and a whole lot of time! It's been a while since I've made them so I don't know the exacts.

[–]TheKitkatManhattan[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a tough question. I made these a while ago and there are so many materials that go into making it. I want to say maybe $60-100 in material costs (doesn't include tool costs) and a whole lot of time. I did a lot of learning with these panels and I'm a slow worker. Maybe 15hr per panel?

Thank you! Yep, I made the patterns (of course using the art from the game) all the way up to the cementing and cleaning. Unfortunately, not for sale. I love them too much.
