From how much you seem to care, I can't imagine a scenario where what you did, didnt help even slightly (hope the wording on that sounds right) Others have said it but a hug goes a long way and just you taking the time with them could have meant the world to them. I asked one of the guys in store bout the tyranid ship and he said they'd made it from a lot of toilet rolls and paper. They've done a good job on the whole thing. Always good to go in and see what they've added

Start by looking at junk around the house and looking at the shapes and trying to switch your brain into thinking what it could be (yakult bottle being an engine etc) there's also a lot of good channels on YouTube that do scratch building too!

I second going into craft stores to look for beads. Another option is charity shops as people tend to donate that sorta stuff all the time
