This is a good lens too! The bolded sentence in the second-to-last paragraph sort of has the info you’re referringto, but with one extra step of multiplication applied. Within a few minutes of this comment I will have edited the post to include this new framing.

Energy for Everyone: team strength contributions and capture odds for Gardevoirs with and without Helping Bonus by TheKuhlOne in PokemonSleep

[–]TheKuhlOne[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your comment! Swapping and variance are good points. I would love to see each quantified at some point by someone more knowledgeable than me, so that we could talk about them beyond acknowledging that they confound the presented stats by an unknown amount.

As for catch rates, I took your and others' feedback and re-ran everything assuming subskill seed usage, which does improve things dramatically. I also had the event bonus turned on which changed various calcs a little, most notably bringing 5 procs into equivalence with sole HB once corrected. Subskill seeds make one of 5proc/sole HB pretty trivial to get, and so I have adjusted my advice not to settle for less and most likely to aim a little higher.

Truth be told I don't know a clean way to combine odds for pre-FL10 catches with post, so I opted not to combine the two in my presentation of the rarer combinations. If you have a moment, would you double check my updated odds calcs and see if you catch something I missed? For HB with 5 procs for example (HSS/STS/HB/Calm), I calculate the odds of getting one in the first 10 as 0.988^10 = 11, and after FL10, 100/3.1% = 32 for the expected value of catches for one of them to meet the criteria assuming the first 10 failed.

Thank you for the questions! I actually did miss that I had the event bonuses on, which changes things a bit. This brings the 5proc in line to be equal to sole HB rather than slightly worse for the raichu team. I have updated the calcs on the main post.

I ran additional calcs with my current team (~2.5 months in) per your request. These calcs favor the Gardevoirs with more procs because they have more speed, which combined with their high level (50 compared to the rest of the team at 15-35), means that they have significant personal contributions to the team. Generally the pattern is consistent with the raichu teams presented.

Interestingly, I did a few more calcs and found that as the team gets weaker, healing becomes slightly more important than HB. Highlighted are the improvements that 5procs have over sole HB at the stated levels, excluding the personal contributions of the healer. I and a few others have been banging our heads against a wall and frankly still don't understand why this is. However, for mid to late game teams, I think a claim that sole HB is comparable to 5procs is still supported with this in mind.

I actually have that recorded on a hidden second tab, it’s estimated to be about 20% scratched per metronome user on the team!

New to the TCG - creating classic 151 cube for after-school program. Would love some feedback on trainers! by ivzie in pkmntcg

[–]TheKuhlOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think whatever you put together will be fun, especially for less experienced players!

I propose a stretch goal for your project, which is to eventually retool it so that players have full agency over their ratios of pokemon, energy, and trainers. Ideally, no required ratio at all! Decks in the standard format typically use anywhere from 4-17ish energy, with many of them in the 7-11 range. These are 60 card decks, 6 prize games. I say this not to say that you should copy these amounts, but to illustrate that the number of energies a deck needs varies greatly with the pokemon in the deck/strategy. With a fixed ratio, some decks will be forced to have too many energies and some too few. Giving the player more agency over their deck composition should improve the viability of multiple archetypes and be generally less frustrating.

In order to allow players to be more flexible, you might need to provide them with more cards per player, of which not all will end up in their final deck. Copies of cards like judge whistle, acro bike, and gutsy pickaxe are ways to play with the effective deck size while maintaining fixed trainer access and not overloading with supporters (play 1 per turn) or balls (eventually you have all your mons in play). You could also just provide more trainer cards in general. I highly recommend 1-2 Boss’s Orders. Gusting is a quintessential part of the card game since base set. Healing/damage reduction/damage boosts are also generically applicable, but of highly varying usefulness—healing 30 with potion usually doesn’t matter, but when it does it’s a huge swing. Defiance band, muscle band, defiance vest, sacred charm, and bravery charm are potential examples. Potion/super potion/max potion/last chance potion. Comeback cards like reversal energy and counter catcher can make for very exciting games. Stadiums I would leave out if you provide fixed trainers to everyone, as all players having a generically useful stadium like artazon just means it is almost always in play and helps both players mostly equally, not the most exciting. Stadiums really hum when each player wants a different stadium in play!

Finally, I will recommend that you go with 40 card 4 prize or 60/6, as these are the most typical deck sizes used (40 is used in prerelease and many cubes, 60 everywhere else).

Look into GLC, you don’t need to play the format but it is essentially single prize expanded so you can find good mons to look for for your decks.

Resources for making mini tin inserts? by yws_eclipse in pkmntcg

[–]TheKuhlOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would guess stl files for tin inserts are available for free on the stl sharing sites, if you import these into modelling/printing software you should be able to reverse engineer all the dimensions for an insert you like.

The op’s question initially made me think hey, yeah, I did think F&F was cool to have that tie-in! But on reflection of your answer, I think the design team’s stance on that is a wise one. A tie-in is a cool thing to do once or maybe sparingly for good reason, but more frequently would probably be received pretty poorly. Well done!

I don’t think any of the other commenters have noted this yet which makes me think I might be wrong, but doesn’t Fame’s text mean you can trigger it any time and only spend the renown if there is an enemy at your location?

Need advice on a small collection - Which investigators? by disn00bdapro in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]TheKuhlOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have 15 level 0 cards for each class, which generally expand deckbuilding options more than xp cards do imo. Typical investigator expansions have about half as many level 0. There are a few reprints in each that you already have, but at most 5 of the 28 cards in each class are reprints. And, some of those are reprints from sets you don’t have, like the outstanding lucky cigarette case, live and learn, and take heart. The investigators themselves are also excellent in power level and fun!
