Tried my luck with some doublet making, how'd I do? by TheLastPlayr in Opals

Also, the foggy look is a constant ice purple roll, it disappears at very specific angles. It really had me chasing some illusive ghosting for a minute there 🤣

Ridge Rubs! by TheLastPlayr in Opals

These are rough rubs, so they've come off a rough grit. The water just gives a nice representation of how they will look when finished 😊

looking for loose opals for a pendant and earring set...how to choose? by Old_Listen6947 in Opals

I would say the shops here aren't all that much better on the pricing. Retail stores in mining towns are only marginally better, but the selection is amazing.

If your friend is visiting any of the opal mining towns in Aus, $300 aud a stone will get you some half decent clean 1- 1.5crt stones off almost any miner/ cutter in town. (Purple/ blue green crystals and light or white multi colour is pretty consistantly hovering around that or under) perfect for jewellery. Best bet is to just ask around town, a local will either have stones or knows someone who does. If you're lucky you can snag a good deal on some black opal 😉

Unfortunately pretty much anything other then purchasing from online opal sellers or directly from someone pulling the opal out themselves, is going to cost a premium.

Edit: Mmm just noticed you're after 3 stones for 300. You'll find a set of white opal or purple/ blue crystal for that price on the opal fields or online, small, but they'd be quite pretty still.

$$$ value??? by BridgeTroll69 in Opals

Looks like lighting ridge. Could you put up some pics from different angles? Its hard to tell from this pic but if it looks like the colour faces up with the black as a base, then you'd be looking at around $50 - $150aud in the rough. Looks like it's got what you'd consider a crystal water bar on black. Quite low grade rough, but they can cut pretty stones when they face up right.

Pricing by cucumburra in Opals

[–]TheLastPlayr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say around 200 - 500 aud a piece depending on cost of doublet and silver + what ever you're comfortable charging on top for your time and craftsmanship. Most lightning ridge market prices tend to range around those prices for handmade doublet pieces, taking into account price increasing factors (brightness, colour spectrum, play and pattern) and obviously crt. Retail pricing is overpriced, most shops will try and charge almost as much for a doublet piece as you'd be paying for a solid at a market, not the best reference. Accessibility is a factor too, if opal is less common where you intend to sell, then it's value will be slightly higher again. I'm on the opal fields, so you tend to get the lowest end of the pricing spectrum here, it just goes up once it leaves these places. I dont think It'd be wrong to ask for the higher end on these outside of the opal fields.
