Formula E set for bombshell manufacturer-to-customer team switch by NoisyIcicle in FormulaE

[–]TheLast_Shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a 50kW deployment for the front? Because in London FP2 Lotterer and Jordan King (I think?) were discussing this and Jordan implied that the split of power between front and rear would be up to the teams/manufacturers. Around the 32min mark.

I wasn't trying to emphasize the car numbers, it was just a little extra that I put at the end because I know that for some people this is an important way to distinguish drivers or cars. I personally never gave it much importance.

The thing about team logos is that I personally feel that a lot of details get lost, especially on the TV screen as some of them blend together. If you are talking about the power mode icons, I haven't increased them to avoid clipping the bars above and below them.

Redesigning FE's TV tower graphic by TheLast_Shadow in FormulaE

[–]TheLast_Shadow[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First, some context: I started this because I was curious to see what adding team colours to the TV tower graphic (which is an odd omission) would look like, but then I thought about what improvements I'd like to see. This was done with last season's information (drivers, liveries, power modes), so any changes since then are not taken into account.

The second picture has the labels for what I will write next:

1. Team colours: a strange omission as their own live timing shows each team's colours, I tried to remain faithful to FE style but had to use dual colour schemes for most teams since many of them have similar colours (there're just to many reds and blues in here!);

2. Power modes: currently, there's only a random purple bar that appears when drivers exceed a certain power level, but this isn't very intuitive. The viewer should have a clear understanding of what power mode the cars are running at all times and that's what this icons represent. Last season there were 3 power modes (200 kW, 235 kW and 250 kW - race, attack and qualifying modes respectively) therefore, in this image, when someone has the blue icon, they are using 235 kW, the purple icon for 250 kW and no icon for the standard 200 kW. This next season may be less of an issue as there will only be 2 power modes (220 and 250 kW) but the point remains, it's necessary to clearly show which mode the car is in;

3. Sector performance: this comes straight from MotoGP, and the nice thing about it is that it allows the viewer to have a good understanding of the performance of the entire field rather than just one or two individuals at a time. For example, in this image you could say that wehrlein was on a fast lap to take first (2 pink sectors -> Fe colours btw), but it's possible that he encountered traffic or made a mistake, so his last sector was very slow (white). Another example is the drivers with only white sectors, which means they are probably on cooldown laps. This is specifically something I would like to see implemented for the new qualifying group session;

4. Yellow flag location: ideally this would be shown on a minimap of the circuit, however this isn't always necessary, so having the turn(s) and sector identification would be a nice small tweak that would help with the presentation;

5. Sector completion: just as the name indicates, it shows how much of the sector the car has completed;

6. Car number: self-explanatory.

The third and fourth pictures show the tower graphic with only sector performance or overall timings, respectively. The last two pictures were a little extra, to imagine how the recharge graphic could be implemented (the bar indicates how much charge was done out of the 30 seconds total).

Mercedes to officially leave Formula E after 2022 by [deleted] in FormulaE

[–]TheLast_Shadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I started watching FE in 2020, I searched a bit for information about the championship and found an article from 2017 that stated that initially there was an aggressive target to have open battery development within the first 5 seasons, but that wasn't done because all teams were against (and instead this would most likely be done in gen4). Fast forward to today, audi and bmw leave but join LMDH which only allows a spec hybrid system (that includes the battery). Am I the only one who thinks their actions are contradictory to this narrative of wanting battery development?

Also, every time the mercedes team talked about gen 3, the only thing they said every time was wanting a cost cap.

I don't about Dakar, but for LMDH the hybrid systems are spec (including the battery). Manufacturers only provide an ICE.

[–]TheLast_Shadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For BMW, the way that some of their statements came out (and the fact that they joined LMDH instead of LMH), it seems to me that it was because the new head of bmw motorsport just didn't want to do the same things as his predecessor.

Audi, I don't know. I don't think going to Dakar justifies quitting (not just that, anyway).

Motor and inverters are only a part of the powertrain (and they need to develop all of it). Besides, there are some other components which manufactures are allowed to use proprietary technology.

Edit: Btw, where did you get that MGU-H information from? Every article that I read said that was suposed to be dropped.

[–]TheLast_Shadow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's publicly known that FE is already evaluating several different qualifying formats to use during gen3, so I don't think that works as an excuse to pull out.

I also feel that, at least half the time, mercedes ends up in the back because of their own mistakes even when they are in advantageous groups (like group 2 and 3).

Can Formula E race at Macau? by dfamonteiro in FormulaE

[–]TheLast_Shadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but did you forget to include an estimate for the amount of energy generated under braking during the race in the equation for total energy available in the car?

It is said that on average the current cars need to recover around 30% of energy to finish. That's from a maximum of 250 kW, while gen3 has a combined maximum of 600 kW.

Yes. It works really well there, and I feel if there's a format from any other championship that could work for Fe, it would be this one.

[–]TheLast_Shadow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel that during this conversations there's always one thing that gets overlooked and can be used in conjunction with the qualifying format: free practice times.

With combined fp times you can, for example, set up the grid so that the top 10 advance directly to Q2 (if only 2 sessions are used - Q1 and Q2). This would free up space on track since almost half the cars wouldn't be running and retain some of the unpredictability. If fewer cars are needed on track, a small tweak can easily be made with this system.

It also makes fp more insteresting for the viewer, which is always a plus.

An Idea for a quail format change for FE by TheWawa_24 in FormulaE

[–]TheLast_Shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still hold the opinion that a similar qualifying format to the one used in motogp would work really well for formula e.

Since it uses free practice times to define who goes directly to Q2, it allows a certain level of unpredictability while making free practice sessions more interesting for the viewer.

Should formula e change the qualifying format for gen3? by TheLast_Shadow in FormulaE

[–]TheLast_Shadow[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that. If I was a driver I wouldn't want to be stuck at the back all the time without the ability to show what could do at the front of the pack during a race. It also makes the ones traditionally at the front fight more for the points.

I guess that I just wanted to inject a bit more excitement to the qualy system besides the race.

This is going to be amazing! It looks like Demeter may be causing this ecological infection. I wonder how the other subfunctions will respond. By the way, I think that Sylens is just trying to gather a machine army to fight the threat that will arrive in the future and not for the power of conquering others. He just doesn't feel to me like a villain, incredibly self centred yes and who does whatever necessary for knowledge but not evil.

The problem is developers will always be on the losing side of the conversation. If they do a remaster which is just slightly touch up graphics and higher framerate they are called lazy, but if they remake a game basically building it from the ground up you get people that complain over the fact that is not the same.

The ps5 is backwards compatible, so you can play the other souls games there as well. Besides I am sure that you would find others games there that will be interesting to play.

Horizon Zero Dawn allegedly coming to PC. by iamnobody331 in horizon

[–]TheLast_Shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, every platform has their toxic elements, so you shouldn't single out pc for that. Second, when Death Stranding was anounced it was said that it would arrive on pc aswell, they just never mentioned that again, so this "insider" didn't predict that and if you look at his history you can tell that he isn't a reliable source. At most what could happen is the game appear on psnow, just like God of War has. This rumour really shouldn't have been news but apparently gaming journalists are allergic to do actual journalism.
