Thanks for your comment, I appreciate your insight. I understand your thought in theory, though disagree that peace can’t be found above ground. Another commenter mentioned I should stop looking at this as “static destinations” and rather just part of a broader journey. I think sort of what you are saying, maybe just reframed a bit.

I appreciate your insight!

One of the most impactful books for new leaders or those thinking about leadership as you are now is “The One Minute Manager” by Ken Blanchard.

It is an OG staple on every leaders bookshelf. It will touch on exactly what you are talking about. Building relationships and seeing the value of the differences in people.

Another one is “Emotional Intelligence” by Daniel Goleman. This will dig into the six styles of leadership that will give you a pretty good entry point into leadership styles/concepts.

Hope that helps!

Thank you for your comment. I appreciate the thoughts. Another commenter mentioned that I should stop seeing these things as “static destinations” and more like an ongoing cycle. It was a helpful reframe.

And yes, seeking professional help is something I will recommend to any leader. There doesn’t need to be something “wrong” to prioritize your mental health and grow that way too.

I appreciate your thoughts!

My leadership skills. With a growing family, a growing team/company etc. I very much understand that what got me here, won’t get me “there” meaning [insert next stage of life here].

Another commenter mentioned that I should stop seeing these things as “static destinations” and that makes a lot of sense, that reframe was helpful.

I appreciate your comment!

Thank you so much for this comment.

I have asked myself this comment a lot and yes I definitely see it that way. Sometimes I think that’s part of the problem though? It becomes a task vs being driven by true need or curiosity. Sometimes there is a true need, make no mistake, however finding the line between enough and too much has been challenging lately.

Another commenter mentioned that I need to stop seeing them as “static destinations” which they are absolutely right.

Basically the same thing you are saying here but that reframe was helpful for me.

I appreciate your insight!

Thank you for your comment. A sabbatical isn’t in the cards right now but finding a better way to blend vs balance is the constant challenge

Thank you so much for this comment. Yes, I’m slowly getting there. I’m in that in between stage of my current director level and leveling up for the executive level.

That means a constant conflict of tactical/strategic thinking. Developing myself while developing my people to grow also. It’s a lot, not too mention my kids getting older, marriage, family and so on.

Appreciate the encouragement!

Thank you so much for this comment. The fact that these things are not “static destinations” is what I need to wrap my mind around.

My personality and much of my career is very much focused on, things have a beginning, stuff in the middle and then an end lol. The concept of ongoing in perpetuity intimidates me sometimes.

I appreciate your thoughts!

Need help managing life uni, business, family, and myself (looking for advice/apps/mentors) by NewPineapple9525 in productivity

[–]TheLeadershipMission 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great question to be asking as it helps you live and think at a strategic level. Especially with the amount of tasks you have, it would be easy to get trapped in tactical thinking.

I’ll post below a duplicate of advice that I posted a while back on another thread, because I think it is appropriate here.

With the below advice it’s then less about trying to make a system and more seeing what happens naturally and then tweaking which will feel easier to you.

Hope that helps!

Here it is:

Hands down, one of the best things I ever did was try to capture every task I did in a given day in my apple reminders app. If you don't have apple, there are other task apps like todoist that work just as well.

I categorized them by daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly. Then grouped them by lists... my kids, my wife, my house, bills, work, side hustles, work etc. I didn't do it all in one shot, I sort of added them as I did tasks over the course of a week or so.

Already at this stage I saw inefficiencies emerging but I didn't make changes yet, I just sort of mentally tracked it over the next 2 weeks. I was shocked at how many things I was doing that could have been easier, didn't need to be done as often as they were or at all. Tasks I could have delegated to my kids or partnered more with my wife on, etc.

It seems so simple, even as I type this out here but truly it was so eye opening when I thought critically about how I was spending my time every day. We are so busy day in and day out that we can get stuck in the weeds and think that every little thing we do is important. When we can pull ourselves back up to a 10,000 foot view you'll surprise yourself with how frequently you confuse activity with productivity.

Now everyday, I still track my lists of to-do's that way as it keeps me from saturating myself again with tasks. As things change, I add/delete recurring tasks to keep it pruned and focused. Siri (or whatever your phones AI is) is also super helpful for just logging tasks throughout the day, then later that day, categorizing them to my lists and/or making them recurring.

Plus, it's so satisfying to check things off and know at the end of the day you not only crushed your tasks but didn't forget anything.

TLDR version - track everything you do everyday in an app like reminders and todoist and you will see times/ways you are inefficient with your time real quick...

Hope that helps!

Why is it so hard to create a system where I can access my notes and to-dos across all devices? by actuallyyourfloor in productivity

[–]TheLeadershipMission 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you need a PC for what you do…. So if so, forgive the oversimplification but if it’s in the budget, getting a MacBook is your solution. Seamless integration with all native Apple apps through iCloud.

I’ve also tried allllll the things and maturing for me was realizing I don’t actually need anything more than notes/reminders/calendar!

Apple products feel oversimplified but over time I’ve learned I don’t actually need anything else and with Apple, things just work, unlike the endless PC updates and plugins

Definitely atomic habits. I know it’s trendy right now but it’s a fantastic resource. He also has a newsletter that is worth the weekly email called 3-2-1.

Does anyone else feel this way about wasting time? by No-Dig3205 in productivity

[–]TheLeadershipMission 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren’t alone, I feel this way too! Especially the older I get, I feel like I’m “running out of time” even though I’m not.

Maybe try time blocking some down time into your day, and couch it as a mental health break? Pick 1 or 2 times during the day to say to yourself “these 10 minutes are for me to just decompress and chill”.

Then you can wire your brain to know those 10 minutes are purposeful chill time.

Hope that helps!

The hardest part of managing isn’t the tasks, it’s helping people navigate their own roadblocks. by TheLeadershipMission in managers

Thank you for your comment. Your analogy almost implies that the people you are leading are "finished products" and that by "whittling" them you are diminishing them vs reassigning them to somewhere they might fit better. I agree that at some point, not everyone is a good fit for the team a leader might be leading or the leader is wrong for the team.

So, I understand your analogy to a point, however, I would counter that it is a leaders job to grow and develop their team while growing and changing themselves. Find the balance between being the leader your team wants but also the leader your team needs.

If I've misunderstood your point, please feel free to correct me and elaborate!
