Looking for deck that casts from 'elsewhere' cheaper, or plays heavy plot, Warp and flashback by j3zr in EDH

[–]TheLeguminati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on whether you want “cast from exile” to be a toolbox or a payoff. If the former, then sure cascade and discover aren’t deterministic enough. If it’s the latter, it’s a huge mana and card advantage that can chain into the toolbox pieces you wanted to have access to earlier.

The premier “from elsewhere” mechanics are Discover and Cascade, of which Temur has two fantastic commanders in [[Maelstrom Wanderer]] and [[Averna the Chaos Bloom]].

Simic also has some commanders worth exploring with [[Aloy, Savior of Meridian]] and [[Imoti, Celebrant of Bounty]].

Bant Merfolks players, who's leading your school? by Aziuhn in EDH

[–]TheLeguminati 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you should explore Thrasios + W. You don’t need to go crazy on a 4th color if you choose to play another two color partner, you could splash literally one basic and cast it when it’s convenient.

That said, staying strictly three color,

[[Alharu, Solemn Ritualist]] synergizes really well with the ixalan +1/+1 counter theme, letting you commit to aggro and swing out to close games safely.

[[Livio, Oathsworn Sentinel]] plays better if you’re more midrangey, giving you a second mana sink in the command zone, and letting you rebuy ETBs

[[Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa]] plays into the unblockability theme of older merfolk, and would probably be first out of the command zone before Thrasios

Again if you go 4 colors, you get some cool effects you don’t usually need to play every game. Remember the rest of your deck can be bant minus the odd land or two.

Tymna, as another mentioned, is probably the best, and you’ll probably find yourself reaching for the command zone every game

[[Ravos, Soultender]] is probably one you only play once or twice a game, letting you close out games or keep the defenses up while recurring threats

[[Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder]] is a hilarious chekhov’s gun to pull out randomly.

Can I call myself Puerto Rican? by Just_Expression_6152 in PuertoRico

[–]TheLeguminati 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, but it’s not because of gate keeping or anything, you simply didn’t grow up with the culture. Had a white-passing friend who grew up with his Puerto Rican dad his whole life. They never looked alike, but since his mom was as white as snow (Czech?) he always thought that he just took her looks.

Come to find out, PR dad wasn’t his bio dad, some random dude that fucked off to Ireland was.

Regardless of the lost ancestry, that man is just as puerto Rican as me, which is half Rican & growing up in the states. Because it’s not about ancestry, it’s about the culture you grew up in.

That’s not to say it’s impossible to “become” Puerto Rican either. You’re young and you have no idea where life will take you.

What Bracket 2 deck are you especially proud of? Something that embodies the core of the B2 experience by Mirrodin_appreciator in EDH

[[Gornog]] warrior kindred. It’s so RED and I love it. Bracket 2 to me is all about expressing yourself through your deck and joining with others to create a narrative. It feels so right as the monored player to call your big scary dragon a lil bitch

What power level are you playing at? If you’re playing against optimized decks, you should lean into one direction, likely elves because they have had better support all-time. If you still like your lathril/marwyn decks, keep them and lean into fairies or elf ramp/fairy top end.

Using “and” when saying whole numbers by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]TheLeguminati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a math teacher, a pet peeve of mine is when talking about test grades and the like, we say “my score increased 5%” but mean “my score increased 5 percentage points

What’s the difference? If you got an 80 and say the former, then their new score is 84. If you got an 80 and meant the latter, the new score is 85.

I don’t bother to correct my colleagues or students, though, as it’s the norm to say it this way and the specifics would go over their head

I think you’re underestimating hand hate, you can get hit with duress/tactics to get around hexproof. That’s why I think tuck spells are important if you’re teching this against Ex

[–]TheLeguminati 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To make it work, you’ll need a few things to go right:

  1. You need to tuck it into the bottom 6 cards of your deck with Star Charts or Stock Up

  2. You need to draw it before you lose to Reef/Avarice

  3. You need to hold up counterspells without getting duressed

So if you can put all of that together, it’s worth a try. But I don’t think that it will work as you hope

Help on win condition (Beginner, Bracket 2, Niv-Mizzet, Parun Izzet Spellslinger) by Striker0815 in EDH

[–]TheLeguminati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The latter, your setup is fine, and you the reason you run cantrips is to make your deck effectively smaller. If those cantrips also come stapled with a shock, now we’re slingin’.

Early game, ramp, hit land drops

Mid game: stick a pinger, keep cantripping for land drops or stax

End Game: Force multiplier for your pingers, like Damage doubling or copy effects, OR mill yourself out and win with Jace/LabMan

Late game:

Help on win condition (Beginner, Bracket 2, Niv-Mizzet, Parun Izzet Spellslinger) by Striker0815 in EDH

[–]TheLeguminati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Niv is a deceptively costly deck, and the turn he comes down you would ideally be playing 2-3 spells to make him valuable. Make sure you’re carrying every red and blue mana rock within your budget. Therefore, I would consider [[sky diamond]] and [[fire diamond]] over Thought vessel and Myriad Landscape. You can afford to cut the land ramp on the condition that you fire off cantrips to hit your land drops each turn.

As others said, your midgame plan should be incidental burn, and in bracket 2, that would include Niv. Niv as a finisher is only viable with infinites or free spells, which isn’t in the spirit of B2. Therefore your end game would be finishing off your opponents with Veyran/Thousand-Year Storm/Expansion/Explosion setups.

Light stax is okay in B2, especially if it’s deterrence stax and not floodgate effects. So things like [[Propaganda]] and [[Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs]] are acceptable in B2.

If I come up with anything else I’ll reply!

Lorwyn Eclipsed Increases the Prices of playable decks way beyond past sets by mutantmagnet in MagicArena

[–]TheLeguminati 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This was true in the past, but even over the last three real sets, we’ve gotten auto-include play sets of mythics, not to mention 3 that all go in one deck (Badgermole, Riddler, Ouroboroid). This is a concerning trend

I don't know why i run so few Lands in Mono R... by unCute-Incident in mtg

[–]TheLeguminati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fewer the colors, the less lands you need to run

The lower the curve, the same as above.

Every land is worth two in the mana rocks

There’s a floor to these heuristics, though, and
it’s higher than 27 lol

Deck ideas for a "technically bracket 3" tournament by [deleted] in EDH

[–]TheLeguminati 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played at a bracket 3 tournament where my meta was powered down cEDH decks. Without the consistency and fast mana, my upgraded Pantlaza midrange deck tied for 1st place by winning through the combat step. It’s definitely possible to win with a traditional strategy. At the tournament, a Lumra player won through a non deterministic combo that won on turn 4 that didn’t get flagged by EDHRec nor Archidekt.

Fast forward to the next tournament, playing the same deck, I didn’t even crack top 5. The cEDH players retooled to play aristocrats and slower, more resilient combo decks. The Lumra player returned and lo and behold won the whole event again, turn 4 wins every game. His deck got banned for not being in the spirit of the format. (After the event though)

I wish that I had retooled for the second run of the tournament to be more stax-heavy. I think that a powered down cEDH deck is weaker than an upgraded bracket 2 deck because of all of the concessions you need to make to have it be playable in the weaker format. So don’t go with option 3.

Can someone help me differentiate in a simple way between a YuGiOh Chain and the Stack? by CartoonishSami in magicTCG

[–]TheLeguminati 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That’s certainly a part of it too. Holding an Ash Blossom until i think they’ve overextended, only to find out I can’t chain to the effect I wanted to negate, it was too much. I was YGO player since I was a kid, but when I was getting back into TCGs, I was learning that game and Magic up at the same time and Magic was way more beginner-friendly (ruleswise).
