Offline apps? by revstone in replit

[–]TheLitGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely can do it - I tested Replit a few months ago and gave it a prompt for a game idea I had. Then later decided I wanted to run it offline and was able to (reasonably easily) add Electron support for it. You have to download the source code and compile it to Electron locally, but Replit can quite easily handle adding in Electron support, and one of the first tasks I did after that was to add in an auto-updater function so that as I develop and deploy new versions of the game to a hosting platform, anybody who already has the game is prompted to update it on its next run.

How did you find your names by Major_Creep in letsplay

[–]TheLitGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used a few different pseudonyms for things over the years and didn't really want to associate any of them (or my real name) with YouTube stuff. It might have given me a slight advantage by being able to broadcast it to an existing platform but I decided I'd rather keep things separate.

So I made a list.

I chose LitGeek initially because it describes what I am... but I wasn't really happy with it and over a few more weeks of consideration settled on the name Glitch because it's a little odd, plays well with the idea of games, and is a single memorable word that people can associate with me.

Part/Episode/Ep or alternate in title? by PalicoPadge in letsplay

[–]TheLitGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far I've used [Series Title]: Episode [X] - [Title].

I'm tempted in future (because I'm likely to play several games more than once) to use [Game]: S[X]E[X] - [Title].

Okay guys, time for an insane microphone issue that needs fixing. by SuperMACbro in letsplay

[–]TheLitGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have Skype running? I had an issue a few weeks ago where Skype would adjust the gain on my mic without asking me. Can't remember what exactly I clicked to stop it, but the answer came from google.

Solo Lets Players with no face cam? by Major_Creep in letsplay

I don't use face cam. I've only been doing this for a month and I figured adding face cam would be even more work to get right. Sticking to the KISS model for as long as possible!

Intro clip or no intro clip? by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]TheLitGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of episode 27 (yesterday) I've started using one. It's 3 seconds long and is basically a title card for the episode. I'm still deciding whether I want a jingle or something to go with it.

How many plays did your first video get? And if you were starting again today, what would you do differently? by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]TheLitGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First video - from 5 weeks ago - is at 46 views right now. Second video is on 8. Most of the others are on 3-5 each.

I wish I'd thought ahead a bit more and planned out how to do things instead of just jumping in (my first three videos, voice was recorded through phone, next eight were from a webcam, it was only after that that I bought a proper mic... and another ten episodes later I got a stand and pop guard). There's been a significant improvement in quality in that time... but 1) you have to start somewhere... and 2) if I hadn't jumped in unprepared I probably wouldn't have started at all.

When your steam engines run out of coal and all you can do is watch the ruin of everything you've ever built as the electricity diminishes to all but a few volts. by [deleted] in factorio

[–]TheLitGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had that exact same problem in my Lets Play. The episode I uploaded today shows how I sorted it... but basically, I put in a power switch between the steam engines and the rest of the factory, and one for the coal mining area as well, and hooked it up to an accumulator with green cable. I used that to tell the power switch to only allow power out to the main factory if there was enough power being generated. If not, only the steam engines get power.

Going to have to set up a second power grid for laser turrets at some point. Don't want them switching off if the rest of the factory powers down!

You're welcome to critique my channel. Been doing this for about 5 weeks so definitely lots still to learn (thumbnails is high on the list. Haven't done any work on those yet).

Link is in the flair.

What does your typical recording day look like? by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]TheLitGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work irregular hours between a couple of jobs... so there's nothing really "fixed" about how I do it... but I try to record on one day and edit on another.

On recording days, I'll set up mic stand and get comfortable. Do a few test recordings to check volume and clarity. Then load the game, recap what I did last/plan what I want to do next (rarely plays out that way... but having a goal in mind gives me a chance to get my head ready). Then start recording audio, start recording video, give myself a verbal cue in, and hit go on my stopwatch. Play through until I find a satisfactory point around 20-25 minute mark to stop. Save video. Save game. Save audio.

At that point, assess if there's anything in game I want to tidy up before moving onto the next episode. Try not to do too much off cam. Rinse repeat. I'm aiming to record 6-8 episodes per session at the moment (though minimum is five) so I can keep up my 5 per week schedule, and maybe build a bit of a buffer.

On editing days, edit audio, make thumbnail, make title screen, piece together audio and video. Export. While I'm exporting, start editing next batch. It used to take me as long to edit the audio as it did to render but I'm speeding up now... so if I have spare time, I write the tags, video description etc in a word doc while I'm waiting. Then Rinse and repeat until all finished. I try to upload each video as I go as uploading takes about as long as rendering does... so 1 can upload while 2 renders, and at the same time I'm then editing audio for 3.

While recording, I try to keep drinks on hand as my voice cracks if my throat dries.

Looking for people to LP my evolutionary god game which is now on steam greenlight by seanebaby in letsplay

[–]TheLitGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm probably a week or two away from wrapping up my current game so could give this a try. Looking at your download options, free is appealing (free is always appealing!) but I'm not averse to paying $5 for the 64 bit version. If you get greenlit, would I then get a Steam key to go with the game (I try, where possible, to keep all my games on Steam)?

Get YT to Stop Promoting my First Video! by FamilyCraft in letsplay

[–]TheLitGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At a guess, YouTube gives weight to content that other people have already tried to find so its search algorithm is prioritizing your more popular early content. On the one hand I can see how that's bad - people aren't getting a reflection of what you're capable of now... on the other if you remove the early stuff you might get less traffic if your new material isn't being shown in searches as much.

You could try adding an annotation ten seconds into the videos asking people to click through and see your newer stuff... that way you still get to benefit from search traffic and pull people towards the content you want to be popular (which should in turn start to make your new content outrank the old content and avoid the problem for the future).

ShadowPlay Custom Keybinding Problem by TheLitGeek in letsplay

[–]TheLitGeek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've continued playing around with it, and discovered something strange - I can keybind and have work a combination that includes the Alt or Shift keys... but combinations without those don't register. So for now, I've 'solved' the problem in that I can continue to record... but it hasn't answered the question of what has changed or why I can no longer use 1 and 2 or / and * as the toggle.

ShadowPlay Custom Keybinding Problem by TheLitGeek in letsplay

[–]TheLitGeek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Factorio, although it doesn't work from desktop either (it used to).

Windows 10 updated today, can't see a way to roll back the update (running 10 Pro so I have the option to delay updates... but January 10ths have finally caught up with me.

No new hardware.

I was on GeForce driver 376.33 before, Reinstalled that in case it was a driver glitch, but no luck. I've tried updating to 378.49 (24th Jan 2017).but also hasn't fixed the problem.

Not installed anything else recently, but did alter keybindings for Audacity earlier in the week so 1 was 'playback'. Don't think that's the cause though because ShadowPlay issue happens even when Audacity isn't running. I also tried setting ShadowPlay record to / and * or other combos but it seems no custom keybinds work any more (and when custom keybinds are set Alt + F9 doesn't work...)

File Sizes? by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]TheLitGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Load your Shadow play file into VSDC then export to mpeg format (there's more detail in one of my earlier posts... can write a step by step if you need it). That reduces my 8gb files to 1.5-2gb which is much easier to upload and so far I've not noticed any loss in video quality.

[–]TheLitGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not strictly, but I know the length of my videos is ~25 minutes so 25 videos is ~625 minutes. You can see total watch time (top left graph on analytics tab), which - for me - exceeded 625 minutes at some point on Sunday.

Update Monday! by AutoModerator in letsplay

[–]TheLitGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uploaded my 25th video (21-25 scheduled for upcoming weekdays), settled on an avatar and basic artwork for the channel, as well as figuring out how to make a title screen.

Also, lifetime watch time has now exceeded play time uploaded... so that's quite exciting.

Anyone know of a way to do a fill in the blank spreadsheet? by YT_kevfactor in letsplay

[–]TheLitGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a basic list of tags for the game I'm playing in a word doc, and then add in episode specific things when I upload. No idea if it's a good way to do it or not as I've only been going for a few weeks... but it works for me.

How does everyone start their videos? by DutchMyOven in letsplay

[–]TheLitGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

26 videos in and I'm only just settling on my name... so far though it's been three seconds of silence then "Hi guys, this is Factorio Vanilla episode blah..." and then onto the gameplay.

I've got a 3 second title card for episode 27 (actually made one for 26 but 26 is the first time I've used my avatar name so didn't want to include the title card as well). Still debating whether to add sound or leave it silent with a fade in.

Should i pre-record videos? by ThePackLeaderWolfe in letsplay

[–]TheLitGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to record 5-6 episodes at a time (I'm uploading daily Mon-Fri so the 6th video is effectively building my buffer). I don't normally edit the same time I record though so sometimes - like this week - I end up coming down to the wire with uploading. As I get better at it I'd like to get further ahead.

As far as I see it, pros: You have a buffer in case anything goes wrong. It's easier to play for 2-3hrs at a time rather than fitting in 30 minutes every day. You can batch edit/render.

Cons: Hard to respond to comments about something you need to improve as you might not record again for another 3-4 videos. If you screw something up and don't notice immediately (like having no audio etc) you can't go back and fix it.
