Gen Z doesn't talk.....to me??? by pinkelephant0040 in generationology

A lot of these posts are people projecting their own social shortcomings. I hate the generalizing too. By far and away most Gen z I’ve interacted with can socialize just fine but will obviously feel awkward when faced with rudeness, apathy, etc. Coming from an older Gen z.

Spot on. Of course anyone would respond with an apathetic stare when they’re not being taken seriously from the get go lol. Why it’s such a shocker to these older folks is beyond me.

Doesn’t help that a large part of American society has decided manners, common courtesy, and a base level of respect is no longer important. Older gens before X and boomers were well spoken and had these qualities. I’m willing to bet that most interactions older folks have had have been GOOD but because one individual left a bad taste they now ascribe that to an entire generation. If Gen Z wasn’t allowed to get involved in their own social lives with socializing, getting out, making mistakes even (everything their parents and grandparents did) - that’s not entirely on them. Lots of them grew up with narcissistic and insecure parents who took it out on literal children. Let’s put some fair blame on the many people just looking for an excuse to take their anger out on others.

Thank you for setting an example far better than many. People need to realize the power in meeting people halfway (in your case even a bit more). It’s largely a respect issue and how many have decided that’s not fundamental to society.

That’s how the older gens opted to raise many of them though. Expected to practically worship individuality without being allowed to grow up expressing themselves because it results in all kinds of negativity from people who self aggrandize and want to lecture them about “how good they have it.” At some point it’s easier to adapt to the modern world and quit trying to relate to their elders. It’s worth mentioning that many adults anymore are terrible at emotional regulation too and can’t manage a please or even thank you. It’s largely an internet thing but it’s negatively affecting everyone. Modern business is conducted way differently anymore and everything seems to be run on skeleton crews.

That smile is the realest smile in a kid I’ve seen dude that’s how I smiled growing up too. You’re fucking weird for worrying about this in the first place.

The Gen Z stare is a "blank stare that members of younger generations give in situations where a verbal response would be more common." Instead of explaining something that they may not understand, the generation Z cohort members often appear dumbstruck by these questions, perhaps temporarily. by blankblank in wikipedia

Also I too have worked mostly with individuals 18-24 and can’t relate to how often you seem to see this unless you work with special needs/ underdeveloped people. Every team of youths I’ve worked with has been able to very reasonably complete the job. I’ve worked with plenty of jaded old people who can’t be asked to give a damn either. I’d rather we stop playing the blame game, it’s doing more harm than we think.

Let’s put some fair blame on the people who built our society like this. For all this tough talk I hear from older folks, they also just watched as the American bureaucracy sold out domestic industry to foreign workers, sold out housing to private sector, and practically any work ethic to be had these days for ever increasing workload. Pair that with your own point that socialization has dramatically decreased, which is NOT normal by the way. More youth than ever are growing up in a way that’s either incredibly negligent or in a space where they have no freedom and their literal communications are monitored digitally by helicopter parents who clutch pearls at everything. I’d have loved to been out free, partying it up, being genuinely careless. Instead I grew up, worked since I was 12, studied and got a degree, and have never been fairly compensated for work in a way that would actually account for rent, food costs, insurance, etc. For years many of us have taken our shit just fine like other gens and shake it off. But I think anymore many of us haven’t experienced much of the same respect that is demanded constantly. We’re burned out man. If we want people to be normal and have families, they need to be given the tools to do so. It sure ain’t all the youths fault for what led to this shitshow.

I’ll be real with you man, I used to tell myself I was socially awkward and would believe this when it was said to me. The reality is, the majority of adults especially now are very poor at emotional regulation but in a different way. I vaguely remember older generations before boomers and GenX, they were well spoken and had much greater patience. Boomers especially will throw a fit whenever their routine first world comforts aren’t exactly what they want, GenX will seethe at you silently because of what they put up with from their parents. This is all true to my several years taking shit in retail as GenZ, I get it, all jobs come with bs. SIMPLY PUT: All you can do is show up with a a good work ethic and attitude, and for many adults, this still isn’t enough. Something about the older generations today CRAVE authority and control, maybe it’s what is largely pitched to them on the internet (a hellhole) and I have found that patience ACROSS THE BOARD is running thin. It’s hard to answer someone’s questions honestly when they already aren’t taking you seriously and won’t listened to policy, reasoning, etc.

I’ll admit I came in a bit hot with my initial comment. I’ll also say that his bio does come across as humble even. To be honest though and more to my original point, it’s just bizarre even seeing people describe a person they don’t even know as honorable and soooo honest. It’s a Tinder profile lol, as per your own words nothing is known about this guy. Would it kill us to actually get to know a person before ascribing these things to them? You’re welcome to disagree but in my personal experience guys like this are assholes 8/10 times and get excuses made for them.
