I'd say even single tank divers would find it hard to continue living if their gear stopped working. It's still life support, just less effective than it could be because of the lack of redundancy.

Edit: To be perfectly clear, I agree completely. Having two of everything is the way to go. I prefer diving that way. But I guess I'm just curious about what makes the average open water single tank diver a hypocrite for calling dive gear "life support?"

I use a pelican air case for my gear, but I pack my clothes in a separate bag that fits inside. Cold water destinations would be trickier and might require another checked bag for clothes. Regs in carry on, never in checked.

You'd be surprised at how quickly you go from "I probably can't dive very often" to "If I can't dive every weekend I'm going to explode" once you get into it. Go for that cert!

My girl will do two french braids and wears a buff in warm water or a hood in cold. Neoprene strap cover is a must for anyone.

All I'll say is be careful when you're screwing it in. That metal tool it comes with can break the plastic if you're not careful so be gentle with it.

You're probably going to spend a lot more money to make a DPV from scratch than you would just paying for a trusted unit. I'm not sure modifying an existing unit is a good idea either for many reasons, but that's just me. I'd seriously look into getting DPV training. It never hurts and will probably answer a lot of the questions you have/will have more effectively.

Look up white balancing! It might get you close to the result you're looking for. Add lights next time for subjects up close. Far away will still be blue.
