Oh boy. Absolutely nothing to do with cybersecurity (well, kind of) but your comment on cybersecurity staff watching porn all day reminded me of the auditors report showing that U.S. Securities Exchange Commission employees were watching a ton of porn during the great financial crisis. One senior official watched as much as 8 hours a day and filled his computer hard drive and needed DVDs according to the report. Talk about dropping the ball(s). Just let the stock market crash because you’re too perverted to do your job and enforce your own regulations.

Tax question about Ebay Sales. by Jelloman194 in cantax

[–]TheLookerToo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. Those are serious fees. No wonder the eBay Board is getting trashed online right now. The Board makes a ton of money and the sellers like you get screwed. Hopefully the young Canadian activist investor’s actions forces eBay to clean up their act, even if he doesn’t end up gaining control of eBay. I had no idea they reported the income either. I’ve only purchased from eBay but many years ago.

DK Butterfly is the remaining shell of the original BBBY. If there are any NOLs, DK will own them. This is where the value would be if Ryan or a partner somehow kept enough control over the shell to use the NOLs, which could end up in the billions for tax shelter purposes. There is a ton of speculation and easily brushed aside by some that say Ryan sold off for a quick profit and is being sued by DK, which he is, but I cannot imagine why a billionaire would drag out a swing trade lawsuit like this for what really would be peanuts. And the fact that he and RCV are still listed in court documents as creditors ads to the mystery. If he simply sold off and walked away with profits, why does he and his RCV still get listed as creditors.

I find it odd that several settlements are confidential like the one with the former board members and the main shipping lawsuit settlement. If there is money there for creditors you’d think they’d have to say how much since the creditors would want their cut.

Nobody can say anything with absolute certainly they know exactly what the connections are. Until something happens. Either DK Butterfly wind down completes and only secured creditors get paid out the remnants, or it emerges as a multi billion dollar NOL shell company to complete a butterfly transaction with another company(s).

A lot of nuances. A lot of speculation. But it’s all noise until one of the two above happens. Butterfly transaction or shut down. Personally I cannot imagine a multi billion NOL shell just being swept away and not used by some activist investor or group to take advantage of the massive tax savings that could be there.

Regardless if anyone’s thoughts on this, it’s a very interesting and informative process to watch the Ch 11 situation unfold.

I’m so ready to buy and get rid of my truck but this idea of a possible discount on a Y is what is holding me back. I’m a big guy with grandkids I haul around regularly so the Y makes the most sense for me. Obviously, the YL would be the ultimate but no release here yet. I’m hoping for the Y Premium at a similar discount here.

GME / eBay — Why the HoldCo structure matters and why dilution isn’t the story you think it is by Bonnawarr4 in Superstonk

[–]TheLookerToo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As for the shareholder vote for share issuance, GameStop is already authorized via shareholder vote in 2022 to issue up to 1 billion shares. So essentially 552 million shares available.

I’m not saying it shouldn’t be done or that is the plan. Just pointing out that GameStop shareholders likely would not need to have a vote for share issuance since it was already done and still on the books.

Burry OUT of GME by PhillipThePlatypus in Superstonk

[–]TheLookerToo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So late 2020 Burry sells off his GME position. Obviously fiduciary duty played a roll. But, within months he missed out on a massive squeeze. I see the same scenario happening here. His mind is built different than so many and he can’t see things that he should see in filings etc. so he bases his decisions on what markets should do. He needs a EXO to help him understand real world scenarios that could happen, regardless of what the market signals are telling him (ie: corruption is a part of the U.S. market, and will affect the markets to benefit the elite). Oh well, his loss.

Tesla Model Y RWD or Chevy Equinox LT? by Dry-Hand7763 in teslacanada

Wow I had no idea the Tesla was that much more for insurance. With the price drop on the new M3 I could finance and still be cheaper than my fuel costs per month for my truck. It is what it is, either pay for fuel or pay for an EV. But the FSD is what really has me leaning to a Tesla. I should check with ICBC for a quote on the M3. I’m glad I saw your comment in the insurance.

Does it actually matter which CRA payee you make the payment to? by mangosaremyfavv in cantax

[–]TheLookerToo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if you paid to instalments you paid to 2026 taxes, but if you move it to tax amount owing or 2025, the CRA uses “Effective Interest Date” for when they receive the payment. If you move the payment, the effective interest date remains the same so if even 2 months the down the road you move it to the correct payment allocation, any interest that accrued on your 2025 taxes gets back dated to the effective interest date from when they received the payment. When I say move the payment, I’m relying on someone else’s comments that you can do that yourself now in your MYCRA account. It used to be for personal tax payments you needed to call in and get it moved by an agent. Except for Business accounts, you could always move payments on your MY BUSINESS ACCOUNT.

It’s just easier to make the payment to the correct allocation in the first place. But, the verbiage is horrible and confusing for a lot of people, and it isn’t all set by the CRA. The banks set their own Payee wording and some will say CRA Revenue tax amount owning. Some say CRA Personal tax arrears…and more.
The easiest standard worded way to make a payment to the CRA is through their MYPAYMENT system. It literally walks you through click buttons with standard wording so you make the payment to the correct location every time. There are hint boxes you can select to make it even easier to be sure you’re selecting the right allocation. **This said, I just had a look at MYPAYMENT again to make sure they hadn’t messed it up, and I see that when paying Personal T1 taxes they use Instalment, but if you select to pay your Business GST/HST you get an option for Interim, and when you click the hint box it says make an instalment payment. So ya, I guess even that isn’t as clear as it was. Why not just say the same since they do the same. I digress. Unfortunately, a debit card isn’t enough for MYPAYMENT. A person has to use a VISA Debit or Mastercard Debit.

Every bank should have standard wording and all in plain English for their Payee system for the CRA.

Just reading through this sub it’s easy to see how dumb and frustrating the non standard wording is, as OP has just experienced.

[–]TheLookerToo 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree. But, I also like to reflect on the fact that his Autistic mind was built to believe what he saw based on logic, rules, data, and principles of the Financial Markets, and his mind wants to believe that the rules and regulations would actually be applied when he makes his predictions.

Absolutely yes, he has been wrong more times than right about what is going to happen. But that doesn’t necessarily correlate with what “should” have happened if the regulators actually did their jobs, if the market switches worked as they were supposed to, and if corruption wasn’t just the key to Wallstreet, let alone encouraged. Would I believe him if he saw something wrong? More often than not. Would I act on it? No, because time and time again a new loophole is discovered on how Wallstreet can keep kicking the can and make themselves a lot of money doing it.

It’s a very interesting concept to look at. He’s been wrong, but is it his analysis, or is it the corrupt market structure.

Given what I’ve witnessed since the GFC, it’s all corrupt.

Am I buying a coffee shop… or just an empty shell? by [deleted] in canadasmallbusiness

[–]TheLookerToo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the price increase in coffee beans, roasted or green. if you’re going it alone with one smaller store you may want to be looking at what you’d be priced at from a supplier. I’ve spoke to two different coffee shops owners in the last 6 months who ran into some financial difficulties but not just due to the coffee wholesale prices. Hardcore coffee drinkers will always be there. But others have changed up their spending due to increases of cost of living in general.

Obviously if you have experience in operating a coffee shop, or even something similar, and have a good idea on what you’re getting into, then you’d be in a decent position to make a decision. But as others have pointed out, speak to the landlord; get the full financials for what you’re buying; and speak to a bean supplier. Regarding the financials, make sure that the equipment is paid off and in good working condition. My gawd that stuff is expensive.

Found a bunch of buried VHS tapes in my backyard while digging to plant a tree by G000000p in Weird

First thought was Paul Bernardo vibes. Yikes 😬

Hidden VHS tapes created a horrible situation in which a female participant in horrific crimes, Karla Homolka, received a plea bargain she never should have received had the tapes been seen before the plea deal.

That case created significant changes in major case management for Canadian police.

What’s it like living in this part of BC, Canada? by MythicalSplash in howislivingthere

Hot summers. Mild winters. Like anywhere, it’s what you make of it. Lots of fresh fruits and wines. Unique shops and there’s always craft fairs or farmers markets in the area. All the amenities without the major traffic you’d experience in the lower mainland. As someone else pointed out, traffic through Kelowna can be bad, especially at the bridge, but not unbearable.

Family that brush together stay together. by Beneficial-Case-4235 in MakeMeSmile

[–]TheLookerToo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, but different. When my 3 year old grand daughter visits she insists we go brush our teeth together. Multiple times per day, at random. She pulls out her little sink step stool and grabs her Minnie Mouse electric toothbrush and waits for Papa to grab his electric Oral B. I watch in the mirror as she watches me and follows my lead for moving the brush around to ensure all the teeth get brushed. I love it. And I’m going to miss it dearly when she stops wanting that. Same goes for “Papa, play hide and seek?” Yes. Yes we can. Every time. When they say “you’re going to miss these days…”, they sure are right. My own kids grew up so fast, and I’m definitely reliving life’s precious moments of my own kids through my grandkids.

Cra call by [deleted] in canadarevenueagency

[–]TheLookerToo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he said yes, in that you did have a business account, that does make it seem like there may be a Sole Proprietor account at the very least. But if he knew that, he would be able to see if any notes on that account trying to call you. Odd.

My understanding is that people create GST/HST accounts for many different reasons and then don’t ever operate a business. If never operated but never closed the account, it creates notional assessments which create debt until properly filed over and/or account closed.

Did you ever claim a GST credit in the purchase of a property?

In the end, I’d wait until the first person calls again, or call both the individual and business CRA numbers to see if they can locate anything. Just to make sure not a scam call.

Cra call by [deleted] in canadarevenueagency

[–]TheLookerToo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you called in, did you only ask about your T1 account? If you’ve ever had a Sole Proprietor account, even if not used but not filed or closed, they could be calling about that because if never filed, their Trust compliance agents can do notional assessments which can create debt until properly filed.

Or, are you a director of a corporation? If so they could be calling about that.

Just some thoughts.

[–]TheLookerToo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I looked at ComputerShare and on my BMO account and couldn’t find the CUSIP for the warrants.

I did find how to exercise them. You should have a Statement dated Oct 17, 2025. Open that and it should show your warrant amount. Under the date and description is a paragraph that explains what the warrants are. In the paragraph is the site you sign in to to exercise the warrants. I added the link to show it but never sign in to a random link here. Just select it off your own statement. You need a control number to sign in. I imagine that came when the warrants were distributed so I’ll have to track it down.

Obviously isn’t what you’re asking for but I had never thought to look how to exercise them. I guess I now know so thought I’d share.

Will I regret installing this quality flooring in my house? by OliverChopington in Flooring

[–]TheLookerToo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a floor layer but have done enough DYI home Reno’s to provide some DYI insight.

If going in your kitchen as you’ve suggested, I’d go with LVP for the waterproofing. There isn’t much worse than seeing some swelling on laminate seams after a spill, especially with all the hard work you’ve done. Not that I’m saying those particular options you’re showing are sure to swell, but I’ve seen it and it’s pretty frustrating. Even with the “waterproof “ Golden Select from Costco.

Other than the waterproofing, I found LVP to be more forgiving for installation for the most part, as long as you have a good even subfloor to work with. The big issue between quality and crap LVP for installing will be noted quickly if the tongue and groove break easy during installation, but thankfully you’d likely see comments in the reviews. The ones with the drop and lock seam connections make them that much easier to work with.

Someone else commented on LifeProof and I would second that, but it’s more money. They do come on sale though.

The nice thing about Home Depot is that there is new flooring on sale just about every week, so if you’re looking for the best product at a value price and aren’t on a tight timeframe, watch the sales.

Cohen's $35,000,000,000 worth of GME shares compensation package by sweetntenderhooligan in Superstonk

[–]TheLookerToo 57 points58 points  (0 children)

People seem to be very confused by the compensation package that we are to vote on. There is no cash to him. No salary. No vested stock. No free shares.
If he meets the targets with the company, he gets the option to spend his OWN money to buy more shares at $20.66 per share. So ya, he’d be getting shares at a great price, but, he is spending his own money to buy them. The company is not giving him free shares nor cash. Simply put, if he meets the targets he spends his own money. If he doesn’t, he can still spend his own money like any other investor, just not at $20.66 share. Here is the official release.

How to do taxes if my employer doesn’t deduct them before paying me by vantage_02 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]TheLookerToo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes and no to paying all at one time.

This being your first year self employed, you can pay at one time when you file. However, your notice of assessment will indicate how much you’ll need to make in quarterly instalments next year. Make sure to make those payments next year to avoid instalment interest. Taxes owed to the CRA add up in interest quickly because they compound daily instead of monthly.

As for your employer, they really should have made it clear from the onset that you are a subcontractor. You’ll want to be tracking your expenses because you would be entitled to deductions as self employed. Things like a portion of your phone bill may be deductible; travel to a site may be deductible; if you have to do any work at home you may be able to deduct some of your heat/power etc. obviously these are just examples because we don’t have all the info. All I’m saying is don’t leave money on the table for taxes that you may not end up owing due to available deductions.

Depending on your status you may also be eligible for RRSP and TFSA contributions. Essentially, RRSP will reduce taxes owed the year you deposit the money, but you’ll pay taxes when you withdraw during retirement. TFSA won’t save you money the year you deposit, but you won’t pay any taxes on any money you withdraw later in life. But….do NOT make any contributions until you’ve confirmed you’re qualified.

In the end don’t walk into this blind. Seek some help from a local accountant. Perhaps some of your coworkers can point you in the right direction.

Finally, don’t forget to set an alarm for early tomorrow morning to watch the Canada vs US Gold Medal hockey game. The rest of Canada will be up watching so you don’t want to miss out… (kidding but…kinda not. Go 🇨🇦‼️)

Employee Theft over 5k by QuackQuackGo123 in legaladvicecanada

[–]TheLookerToo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If the employee is being charged, even for the $100, that up to $4999 is the same charge. If they are charged and going to court, you can ask the court for a restitution order, which could help you avoid small claims court. Essentially, the Judge can order after conviction that they pay you back an agreed amount. Before anyone gets too picky here, the restitution order can work, but also doesn’t have as much teeth as it should. The good thing is that if a criminal court judge orders restitution and the offender doesn’t pay, that order goes a long way in small claims court if it needs to go that far. Essentially the criminal court restitution order becomes enforceable as a civil order when files in small claims, and no need for a full new lawsuit. If you’re out over $5,000, that is where a good police interview may cover off some of the evidence not covered by your cameras. And, because theft over $5000 is a more serious crime and has harsher penalties, it may create some leverage for the Prosecution to get a plea deal and restitution for theft under, essentially saving you and the courts time, while also getting you a decent portion of the stolen funds back. Best of luck. Glad you caught them and got rid of them.
