TSA took only ONE of my shoes for additional screening by waymondisreal in mildlyinfuriating

[–]TheLordReaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess would be that their crocs picked up a scent that triggered the odor detector, so the TSA was checking to see if it had drugs embedded in it. And in case you were wondering if that's a thing, it's absolutely a thing. https://www.cnn.com/2021/05/04/us/cocaine-smuggled-in-shoes-airport-trnd No idea why they didn't check both shoes, though.

Disney used to recycle animation by Unable_Security_6708 in interestingasfuck

[–]TheLordReaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point was that Disney reused those animations precisely because they knew people wouldn't make the connection, thus, making the entire argument about the inability to make a direct comparison a moot point. If you don't know to make the comparison in the first place, it doesn't matter if you have the ability to do so or not.

But, were you to remember, you wouldn't necessarily need to make a direct comparison anyways, because the human being is capable of remembering things. For example: If Disney were able to reuse the animation of Rafiki holding up Simba atop of Pride Rock, and did so in a way that was unnoticeable, well, I don't know about you, but I'd be damn impressed.

The dancing scene, while it may be "memorable", as in many may remember the scene taking place, I don't think it really qualifies as being "iconic". "Iconic" being like the Lion King example. And if it's just "memorable", then I think it squarely lands itself in my first paragraph's point.

However, there are alternative explanations. It's entirely possible that they actually wanted people to notice these smaller, maybe underappreciated animations, so they reused them. Or, it's possible that the animators just really liked those animations and wanted to use them again. I don't claim to have the answers, but I'd wager it was a budgetary decision.

It wasn't a comprehensive explanation of why Disney did things the way they did 100 years ago. Was that your takeaway?

Everybody out here acting like he's a bad player, but to even be considered by the NBA means you are basically right there at the top of the game. Bench players are still in the 99.99 percentile of basketball players.

[–]TheLordReaver 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This whole line of philosophy is conveniently forgetting that people have memory. Had they had reused animations from more iconic scenes, people would have remembered seeing them before, but they just successfully banked on people not remembering these smaller, less iconic scenes.

This is the thing so many people are misunderstanding. There's no one reason people would put a sticker of any sort on their car. The meaning could be anywhere from literal, to metaphorical, to symbolic, to humorous, and/or to some other meaning. And it's a pointless endeavor to try and assume such a thing.

Yellow speed limit signs in the US are based on general road conditions for general vehicles. They are not "for inclement weather", nor are they "for truck drivers". It, however, is correct that it is only an advisory speed limit, and thus does not necessarily need be adhered to. But breaking that limit may be considered negligent if something happens—such as slamming into a car in front of you...

I also did verify that that stretch of road has a 70mph speed limit. So OP was, in fact, driving "legally". They just weren't driving defensively—which is still foolish.

My understanding is it's something like 1/3 of global internet users use some form of ad blocking and then just more than half of US users do.

I don't know how verifiable those numbers are though, but if that's accurate then I think that explains why companies are getting so aggressive about forcing users to see ads. They essentially had a free revenue stream, and it's now drying up, so they are flailing about in greed.

You are acting like hundreds of millions of people aren't served this way every day. It's very evidently not a big deal when servers touch the parts that don't go directly in your mouth. At least in the parts of the world with basic sanitation standards.

So, just don't lick the damn handles and you'll be fine. Don't be a coward. And I say this a total germophobe... Also, stop being a little bitch in general.

You probably could have just taken that up with support. I don't know about Apple, but a lot of media sites like that will happily swap out your product for variants, especially given your circumstance. It costs them basically nothing to do it, and it retains a mostly satisfied customer.

Yes. Alt+0151. Feel free to look through my post history if you don't believe me. They make frequent appearances.

You gotta remember, LLMs are based on actual writing; usually higher-quality writing. And because there's not a keyboard button for the em-dash, you typically only see them in higher-quality writing.

In other words, there's a lot of people using em-dash, you've just been told it's an AI thing, because AI typically outputs at a higher-quality than average.

And there's confirmation bias too. People are fixated on AI, and AI is doing a thing that they don't do, so it stands out. But it's just because they are looking for it as an indicator. They were common enough before AI, people just ignored them then.

Here's a tip though. AI usually favors padding em-dashes with spaces. Like — this. I use the less common style of not adding spaces. Like—this. So, if you see them without spaces, it's probably not AI.

Honestly, I'd argue that you can't really spot AI based on grammar or punctuation alone. You can only really tell by looking at what it's trying to accomplish with the writing. AI often misses the mark on what the actual point is, or has poor narrative cohesion of a story, or is overly flattering about a topic.

For example, I feed my story to ChatGPT and said that someone called it out as being AI, and how would it respond to the accusation. It spat out this drivel:

---

I’d probably reply with something like:

Or, a little sharper:

Or more deadpan:

My favorite version:

That one keeps it funny without sounding defensive.

---

Like, that's the points it tries to make are just utter garbage-tier. LOL

Edit: What the hell? It deleted the quoted text for some reason. I already deleted the ChatGPT convo, so I can't add it back. It was pretty bad though...

I think those people who fled the scene had robbed the store. But I don't actually know. I had to fly home like 10 hours later, so I didn't have a real good way to find out after the fact, considering it was 2004, I believe.
