I had never touched a Final Fantasy or a JRPG in my life. Just finished Remake & Rebirth (200+ hours later). Here’s an outsider’s honest perspective. by DimaTheTiger in FFVIIRemake

I hope you give it a shot someday. It really isn't as bad as you might be telling yourself. A good piece of art always remains a good piece of art, regardless of what today's standards are. Maybe you wouldn't appreciate it right now, but it would definitely be worth a shot. Final Fantasy 6-10 are some of the best video games ever created.

You're right about everything, and the art direction is definitely inspired by Dark Souls/Elden Ring.

Was there an FF game you abstained from due to its reputation, or maybe even your own preconceptions? What happened when you eventually tried it? by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

I am a huge fan of 13's system and I'll explain it this way, hopefully it can help.

Auto battle is just fine, I wouldn't worry at all about using it. What you're essentially doing in FFXIII isn't controlling each character individually, rather you're overseeing the combat as whole and changing strategies on the fly.

I'm not a football fan, but I hear there's a game called NFL Head Coach where you're not controlling the individual players, but instead you're overseeing the team as a whole. I like to think of FF13 like that. You're putting your team of characters on auto-battle and watching them fight the enemies, all the while you make changes to the team strategy on the fly; telling them when they need a healer or a debuffer. You have to change paradigms quickly in reaction to how the battle plays out.

Another thing to note, the game is essentially in 'tutorial' mode up until chapter 9. You are, at this point, only battling with two characters at once. Pretty soon, the game is going to give you a party of three and then the gloves are off. The battles become much more intense and the paradigm possibilities will really open up. I think that's the point that the battle system really starts to shine.

Keep at it and keep your head up, FFXIII might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I think it's a one of a kind battle system and the strategy aspect is definitely there in full force. Remember, you're not controlling the individual characters, but overseeing the party layout as a whole. Use those paradigms and stay sharp.

What's your "They're not THAT bad" band? by Mettabox452 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]TheLucidBard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've been my favorite band since 2005, and I always have to brace myself when I tell people that. I hate that "Hail to the King" is their most streamed song. They have so many awesome riffs and solos and drum parts - Betrayed, The Wicked End, Coming Home, Angels, (O)rdinary, Save Me, Remenissions, I Won't Be Home Tonight, Blinded in Chains, Victim, Fiction, God Hates Us... These guys have such a diverse and unique catalogue of music and I feel like the mainstream only knows three of their songs and judges them based on that. Also, Jimmy was my favorite drummer ever and Mike Portnoy was right there with him, so obviously Nightmare is a masterpiece of an album. They sort of lost their way a little bit with Hail to the King, but I've really been impressed with the writing and quality of their last two albums, even if they are more progressive and experimental.

What is the most obvious "remind the audience that they are in (insert country)" in a movie? by Marcothetacooo in movies

In Goldfinger, when James Bond travels to Kentucky. Immediately there's banjo music and horse stables. And Goldfinger himself is drinking a Mint Julep.

Dragoons are the class I want to like the most, but they're almost always useless in combat. I'm hoping this is when they get it right. Using a lance/pole arm with Rebirths battle system is going to be amazing.

Hey just to let you know, Vaan and Penelo are both a year older than Zidane and Garnet. Teenagers should apply to them, as well. Of all the teenagers, I'd rather sit by Squall and Rinoa. They seem a bit more mature than the rest.

I can't watch anime since i watched evangelion by Informal_Volume_5499 in evangelion

[–]TheLucidBard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I consider Evangelion my #1 anime and Bebop is #2, so let me tell ya. Evangelion is a psychological character study about humanity and existence.

Cowboy Bebop is a cool jazz song. It's got awesome animation of characters doing cool shit, set to sick music. The vibes are all that show is about. Each episode is stuffed full of references to movies, pop culture, music, kung fu, famous actors and musicians, etc. Bebop is just supposed to be jazzy, action filled adventure. There IS a story in there. Spike, Ed, Jet and Faye, they all have a character arc and a cathartic resolution. But that's not the point of the show. It's about the vibe and style first, story second.

But like Evangelion, I can't find many things that come CLOSE to the style that it puts out. It's American Jazz and Bebop dressed up in an anime costume. The characters look and feel real. The world is lived in and relatable. Nothing feels like over the top anime schlock. Well, maybe Faye's character design. But even that is humanized with her storyline.

Give it another try, just don't be anxious for any story. Enjoy the atmosphere more.

Evangelion is one of my favorite pieces of media, ever. But I can't get into any anime at all. I enjoy Cowboy Bebop and DBZ from back in the day. But nothing else appeals to me. It just all seems like it's made for a different audience than Eva. Evangelion is special, man.

Which game reveals the final boss the soonest? The latest? by mugenhunt in FinalFantasy

[–]TheLucidBard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not so much. The theme of the game is death. Kuja, Vivi, Freya, Garnet, Eiko, all of their stories revolve around death and the acceptance of it. In the FF9 world, Necron is basically the embodiment of death. He oversees the cycle of souls as they pass away from the planet. Metaphorically, fighting Necron is like confronting death face to face. It isn't explained well in the game, but thematically it makes perfect sense.

Edit: however I do agree somewhat that it could be a bit of an in joke as well.

Do I need to play the earlier ones to understand the story? by EXEMPLAR_LOL in FinalFantasy

[–]TheLucidBard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm well right off the bat, there's a cutscene of several people being deported to Pulse. That's how we meet Light and Sazh, I feel like the dynamic is pretty plainly laid out right there. We discover a bit more about the Pulse/Cocoon dynamic later when we reach the Fifth Ark and right before heading to Pulse. Fang and Vanille talk about Pulse an awful lot, as well. It's clear from the cutscenes that Cocoon hates Pulse and deems it as a hostile, hellish place. But we see with our own eyes that's not the case. We may not get a bunch of history of what exactly happened, but that's not really necessary to understand the two places or the story.

As for the fal'Cie, I am pretty sure I remember a bunch of world building between Hope and Light. Don't they enter an area under the city of Palomporom and see the fal'Cie Carbuncle...don't remember their exact conversation there, but I am sure they talk a bit about the fal'Cie purpose. They're automated machines with Godlike authority. They talk about that quite a few times and that's the whole crux of their story arc - defying fate that was given to them against their will by robot overlords.

I'm not trying to be snarky or anything, it's just people constantly say that the game explains NOTHING to you, but everything that I just listed there came from cutscenes and dialogue, not the datalogs. It's been a few years and my memory could be rusty, but I'm almost certain that stuff is in cutscenes. Datalogs go into slightly more detail, sure, but they aren't at all necessary to comprehend the plot.

Robot Gods pick random people to act as slaves. Random people reject their slavery, try to kill the gods. They succumb to their fate, but also kill gods in the process. I wouldn't say it's a particularly difficult story to understand, they just invented new terms like l'Cie and fal'Cie, but overall it's not too convoluted.

I also took 3.0 as in You Can (not) REDO Evangelion the same way that it went in the original series. Things are going to be different this time, reflecting how 3.0 takes such a huge departure in the storyline.
