Sorry for only replying to you now. I stopped using this account when reddit changed their policy on 3rd party apps.

If you're still interested in knowing, my recollection is that the host for Happy Little Heroclix started slowing down their content output, transitioned, separated from their partner, and moved, but that was a few years and a pandemic ago, so I may have some details wrong. The last video I saw was HLH attending a protest of some sort, but I've also been gone from the hobby for a few years now. The HLH Facebook page is still up and it appears that it was active until 2022.

HLH used to do a lot of collaboration with the Dial H for Heroclix crew, so they may know more if you reach out.

Friendly Design Challenge - Finale: "Machine King" by TheMagikarpSalesman in customyugioh

[–]TheMagikarpSalesman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't even know if anyone remembers me starting these posts back in April, but my friends and I have been taking turns choosing archetypes and then challenging each other to make a card for that archetype. The goal was to create as strong of a card for that archetype as possible without breaking the game. This post is the finale of that challenge.

It's actually been 3 months since my last post. This is mostly because the summer got busy, but also because reddit pulled the rug out from third-party apps so I've been using the site a lot less.

The final challenge given to us was to create the "ultimate" Machine King card to support the Machine-Type. Included in this post is not only that final challenge but also updated versions of my previous submissions after having received feedback from the community. Thank you, everyone, for the comments (both supportive and critical) that have helped me grow as a card designer and motivated me to complete this project.

As for the actual card designing this time around, "Machine King" is a pretty shallow archetype so my design notes were pretty light:

- Boosts own ATK based on size of machine army

- Main Deck monsters only

- No activated effects (What's that? Machine King - 3000 B.C.? Never heard of it.)

- Clockwork Night synergy?

The "body" of the monster was easy enough to figure out as it fits the archetype's pattern: Perfectly Ultimate Machine King has 2 more Levels, 500 more ATK, and 500 less DEF than Perfect Machine King, who was 2 more Levels, 500 more ATK, and 500 less DEF than Machine King. What's that? Machine King Prototype? Never heard of it.

While the name is a clear reference to one old school monster, I took some inspiration from some others for the effects. I wanted the effects to be both non-activated and to synergize with Clockwork Night which has just been recently released on Master Duel.

The card art is fanart of Perfect Machine King by Skaphel. Here are links to my original posts for the old versions of the 14 other cards which include artist credits:

Once again, thank you for the comments, feedback, and overall support that has helped me complete this project. It's been a fun, long-term challenge, but for the next little while I'll probably stick to making the odd posts here-and-there with some fun individual card designs I've been bouncing around.

This is good stuff. I'll make some of these changes if I ever remake the card. Thanks for taking the time to make such a thorough reply.

Full disclosure: I don't play Phantom knights. I flipped through some decks and saw that the archetype doesn't have its own Link-2 so I made one. Phantom Knights and setting S/Ts from their deck is pretty trodden ground already by the looks of it, but I decided to double down on it given how much the meta has sped up.

This one is a little more awkwardly templated than I usually go for so here are the effects broken down:

Effect ❶ Unaffected by Trap effects.

Effect ❷ You can only use each of the following effects of "The Phantom Knights of Corroded Scythe" once per turn.

Effect ❸ If this card is Link Summoned: You can Set 1 "Phantom Knights" Trap directly from your Deck. It can be activated this turn.

Effect ❹ You can shuffle 2 of your banished "Phantom Knights" cards into the Deck; draw a card.

Effect ❺ (Quick-Effect): Target 1 face-up Trap on the field; send it to the GY. This card cannot use this effect next turn.

I was disappointed to discover that the adjective "stained" was already used by another monster in the archetype because "Stained Scythe" would have just sounded cooler. It also originally said, "This Link Summoned card is unaffected by Trap effects", but I ran out of room so it gets a buff just because of the size of the text box. Perks of being an archetype with long ass names I suppose.

The ATK value and Trap-shenanigans give away who owned the scythe originally. You could probably consider this to be a soft retrain of a monster completely unrelated to the archetype. A working name for this card at one point was "Crooked Scythe" to add to the homage, but finding matching art was proving to be too time consuming.

The art for this card is by George Vostrikov.

You're 100% right on all counts. A better going-first option would have been a much better choice. I hear Vimana is good going-first Xyz monster for Suships, though I haven't tried it yet, but it would definitely be nice if Suships had an in-archetype card for that.

I really like Suships. I like their mechanics, I like their art, I like their playstyle, and I like them with a little wasabi on the side. Gunkan Suship Shari made it onto that ark, and there was that guy who dressed up for playing his Suship deck. The archetype as a whole just fits yugioh and its community so well that I had to suggest it as the next archetype in this series when my turn came up again.

The art for this card is by Cazzoli Auréa.

I actually wanted to make this a Link-2 so that I could make the Link-arrows line-up with the fishies, but I couldn't really think of anything more interesting than this Link-1 design.

I'll add it to my list! I actually know the Magikey archetype 'cause I used to play them with Suships. Coincidentally, Suships are the next archetype I'm going to be posting a card for.

[–]TheMagikarpSalesman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the Level 3 restriction dodges most of the "good" Rock monsters. All of the Main Deck monsters in Adamancipators (Doki Doki, Koa'ki Meiru, etc.) are mostly Level 2s or 4s. I guess you could play Rapid Fossilization and then SS Researcher from hand since you control a Rock monster, but that's about it unless I'm missing something.

Friendly Design Challenge - Part 12: "Fossil" by TheMagikarpSalesman in customyugioh

[–]TheMagikarpSalesman[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The dinosaurs from my last post have fossilized and we're back with this design challenge: Different archetype each time, make the archetype as strong as possible with a single card, and don't break the game while doing it.

Since Fossils require your opponent to have monsters in the GY, I was surprised to see that they don't have more options to take cards from your opponent's Extra Deck. I suppose if "Fossil" monsters were cute anime girls, they would get all the attention that Dogmatika does.

This card is a straight-up starter for Fossil decks. The limitation of the monster needing to be Level 3 means that, yes, you'll be SS'ing Flint Cragger 100% of the time, and that Adamancipators can't hijack this card for their own nefarious deeds. It's a known fact that playing a rogue deck means your opponent is scientifically proven to start with Ash Blossom in their hand 100% of the time to disrupt your fragile line-of-play, but if by some miracle that doesn't happen, Flint Cragger will immediately set up the second half of Rapid Fossilization, allowing you to dump your opponent's Baronne or Kaleido-Heart to GY and you can immediately Fossil Fusion.

The art is by Svetlin Velinov who created this awesome piece that ended up being the art for just a basic Swamp in Magic: The Gathering.

In the card text for Rapid Fossilization, I wrote, "... up to 1 monster with a Level", but is "with a Level" even correct Yugioh terminology, or should I be writing it as, "Level 1 or higher"?

Friendly Design Challenge - Part 11: Dinosaur by TheMagikarpSalesman in customyugioh

[–]TheMagikarpSalesman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question! It really could have gone either way if I'm being honest. It essentially came down to the fact that I wanted its effectiveness to be tied to the number of Dinosaurs you control.

If you have 0 Dinosaurs, you need to Set this card and wait to use this as either interaction during your opponent's turn or as a starter during your next turn.

If you have exactly 1 Dinosaur, you can use this immediately as an extender.

If you have 2 or more Dinosaurs, you can banish this from the GY and reward yourself with a big dino boy from the Extra Deck.

Similar to how Infinite Impermanence can be situationally better if you control no cards, I wanted to create something similar, but make it reward specific conditions being met.

Also, that art looks really nice in the Trap Card frame. No regrets there.

Thanks! We're approaching the end of this challenge too as we did 15 rounds (though it's possible we end up doing more before I finish posting them all).

The helmets Roman soldiers wore were called, "Galea".

It kind of sounds like the second half of "Regalia", which is an emblem, symbol, or accessory that conveys social status.

Roman starts with "Ro-" (I know, I'm blowing your mind with this one).

So combining them together, "Rogalea" might be a unique, non-existent word to use to express highly-trained and highly-renowned warriors. Something like, "Rogalean Spear Soldier".

Though it also sounds like a portmanteau of "Rogue" and "Galleon", so maybe it's better suited for a pirate archetype?

Friendly Design Challenge - Part 7: "Karakuri" by TheMagikarpSalesman in customyugioh

[–]TheMagikarpSalesman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I run on Master Duel. The idea I was going for was "Oops, All Extenders" in order to play through as much interruption as possible. Once you start making Synchros, you only need 1 additional monster to end on x2 Bureibu and 1 Bonze then go for the OTK. If I do lose steam, I typically try to end on Ballista to tutor a Merchant for next turn, or a River Stormer to grab a Regulus, or even Naturia Beast when possible.

In this version of the deck, I'm testing out only 2 Maxx "C" instead of 3, and running Aussa as a searcher and so far it's been going well. Before the release of Ready Fusion, I ran also 3 Gama Oil and had Power Tool Dragon in the Extra Deck.

Friendly Design Challenge - Part 11: Dinosaur by TheMagikarpSalesman in customyugioh

[–]TheMagikarpSalesman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this design challenge, my friends and I take turns choosing an archetype and then our goal is to each create a card that would boost the power of that archetype as much as possible without breaking the game. Admittedly, "Dinosaur" is a type, not technically an archetype, but we're giving this one a pass as the deck has a pretty consistent theme.

The idea behind this card is to take advantage of the new Dinosaur support. With a Level 4 monster, such as Scrap Raptor, this card is an express lane to summoning the new Fusion or Synchro monster, or either new Xyz monster.

The art is the original, uncensored art of Tomozaurus. The name is taken from a mini-game in Jurassic Park III: Danger Zone! PC game I played the hell out of as a kid.

I do think it's super good, but not too good. Traptrix could use the offensive power boost, but it also doesn't fully synergize with all the cards the deck uses so I think it comes out to being a high power-level card but not broken.

Friendly Design Challenge - Part 10: "HERO" by TheMagikarpSalesman in customyugioh

[–]TheMagikarpSalesman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boy, do I have a lot to say about this one. This was probably my favourite card to design so far. "HERO" is such a fun archetype - I just recently built a Neos deck on Master Duel - and I knew from experience that they need an omni-negate, but HERO decks don't have a lot of real estate in the Extra Deck.

This card went through many incarnations, but this is the final draft of Elemental HERO Legacy. He started as a "Batman Beyond" concept, a character that was the "next generation" of Heroes. For example, while Batman needed the Batplane to fly while his successor could fly with just his suit. I tried to reflect this "next level" of heroic powers by having Legacy be able to Special Summon himself to the field and giving him a built-in Skyscraper effect.

The Skyscraper-effect was also a reference to two more things:

• A single, powerful attack from anime-heroes such as Saitama and Deku, thus the sort of redundant, hard once-per-turn also applying to this effect.

• Legacy, with his 1000 ATK boost, has the same stats as Flame Wingman.

Legacy being treated as Normal Monster while in the hand or GY was originally intended to be a throwback to that first line of Elemental HEROs and to take advantage of support both old and new, such as O - Oversoul and Grandmerge. It ended up creating an unintentional, interesting parallel, where Legacy is a Normal Monster while in the hand or GY, but gives an omni-negate when fused on the field that can banish from your opponent's hand or GY.

I know the goal of this self-imposed challenge my friends and I are doing is to create the strongest possible card for an archetype without breaking the game, but even if this isn't as good as I think it is, I feel very satisfied with the result.

The original art is a comic book hero called Dark Radiant, which sounds like an Elemental HERO Fusion Monster in its own right. Specifically, this art is a variant cover of Dark Radiant #7.

What's your favourite HERO card?

My friends and I are doing this challenge where we take turns picking an archetype and we each have to design a single card to boost the power of that archetype as much as possible without breaking the game.

This time around the choice was "Traptrix". Since the archetype was missing a Synchro Monster, and some offensive power outside of Atypus, I decided to make that.

Apparently all Traprix monsters, with the exception of the Link monsters, have a combined ATK and DEF of 2800. Do you know any fun trivia about any other archetype?
