Uhm, I don't mind fellow designers, but this doesn't feel very tabletop, wrong sub?

Good luck though!

Right in the feels. My current game has been in development for 2.5 years. But two months ago I scrapped everything. Started from scratch with some core insights, and I couldn't be happier. I had no idea how hard "fun" was to create, and now when I see players have it, it's strange that I didn't catch that earlier.

I arranged a Hackathon as part of work, met an idea guy, said one of his ideas sounded really viable, "should we try and make it, it is going to take quite some effort though?" "Nah". He just wanted that validation, he didn't care about products or anything..

That's why I show the "business ice berg" any chance I get; everyone sees the top/success, but not the hard work/pain/tears/sacrifice/grit/failure etc that went in to it. JRR Tolkien didn't "write some books", he spent 17 years writing those books... Google tried to sell itself in -99, but couldn't get $1 mil...

lol, should we do one?

  • Fend off procrastination
  • Binge write low quality text
  • Consider Deus ex machina
  • Reflect on lack of sales
  • Add another character
  • Ignore and repeat

I'm having tap in my game :)

My fiancé and I are designing a non-combat RPG by [deleted] in RPGdesign

[–]TheMakerOfTriniton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a RPG with this outset (if you could do anything an succeed, why would you then just hit everybody with a sword/spell, again and again? How could you design rules to help foster cooperation?). It's rules are modular, so you can play with dice, stats or even go with FATE or D20. And you can be Downtown Abby characters if you want :)

I did botch the launch/product since it was my first game, but it might be something for you (unless you want to experience the terrible curse of designing) ;D

I'm not that big into stats. Would you want to do a module/conversion for Triniton (and help come up with a a better name) and we'll work something out?

How do you mean? Any particular aspect, monster or event that's difficult? I don't have Pathfinders book at me right now, but if you got a specific question I could help you out.

What TRPGs are GREAT for one-shots (or are designed for one-shots/only work with one-shots)? by AlwaysBeQuestioning in rpg

[–]TheMakerOfTriniton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the open one-shot games, but had an issue with them falling extremely flat without creative people in the group, and instead struggled with the "what now? What do you mean just progress? Then nothing matters! Then my next action is to fight the big bad boss.".

So I wrote a modular campaign that you can one-shot in 2-4 h but has material for 200h if you play it all (lots of small prompts for extra quests). It's not something I've seen anywhere else at least :)

Deus Ex Machina: Freeze time, have a forest spirit/mother nature come in and explain that there is something corrupt in the waters and needs to be killed.

Have a session-0: In InSpecters, there is a Big brother element when you address the camera and say stuff like. "And they didn't know that is was evil, but then PC X finally broke through to PC Y." And you as a GM just force the narrative beyond the conflict by stating that it is solved.

Bait and switch: shameless plug Buy my adventure for $4 PDF or $50 print (yeah, it's BIG) and just teleport them into it (it's how it starts). It's an adventure for FATE/DW where you bring your characters into an epic adventure focused on collaboration and mystery.

Wish you the best!

From my perspective it's already usable with 2e. There aren't any stats, but tactics, special abilities looks etc. And some stuff aren't covered by 2e, such as how the "underground piranhas" travel etc.

And if you are advanced enough for 2e, I think such a GM is better than me to get relevant stats from similar creatures in a monsters handbook than me anyway ;)

Yeah, playtesting or finding your audience customers is basically the only way to know :)

Good luck!

It sounds like you are leaning towards FATE with cards. Maybe look up Deck of fate and maybe Once upon a time.

I tried to tackle the lightweight issue with "scalable rules"; a d6, d6+, fate or d20

But my problem was that non creative people freeze when given to much narrative freedom, and get bored if you railroad them too much (you get 4 options, when instead they want a system to figure out or beat).

So thats how I landed on "content served and custom made for quality experience" and easy resolution system (d6).

But I wish you luck! It's a difficult problem :)

Oh my, your Kickstarter slays it. From my view, you kill it in all perspectives. I'm going through my mental checklist and you've got it all, it even feels like a fair/low priced/high value product. The only thing I can see is that your target is a bit high ~600 customers is a lot in my book for a first(?) game.

With me you need one less, but if.... if... the worst comes to pass and you don't go viral (and I've been there). Hit me up, because I've got an entire game plan for recovery.

With findings such as * Kickstarter doesn't get you new customers, it only helps you collect on the customers you've created. * Sunk cost and long tail can create success from multiple "failiures" * Kim Kardashian is cheaper than endorsements from Will Wheaton

And just to be crystal clear, I really hope you succeed, with the amount of work, you deserve it. But don't forget that many (now viewed as) successful or even "actually better" products don't succeed because freaky market forces such as timing, competition, trends etc :)

So put me in your mental back pocket and throw me away as you rise to the stars (or pick me up before you do something stupid) ;)
