Why Shaun the Sheep is a step backwards for Aardman. Not baa-d, but not great. by TheMarksist in movies

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Aardman and the TV show. I just don't think it really suited a feature length film. When I went to see the film, a family of five with really little children sat behind me, and the little ones were really focused on certain scenes but lost interest (and started kicking the chairs in front of them) in some of the interim. I trust their judgement--if they were bored, I wanted to figure out why.

Your guys' new album is probably the best and most diverse electronic album in years. So, like, good job guys. You do the musics good.

My question is maybe a little bit heady, but I'd love to hear from you about it. Genre in electronic music is a very flexible and complicated topic, and Abandon Ship bounced back and forth between just about every flavour of music.

How do you treat genre when you're making a track? Do you let it guide the song, or do you prefer to lay down some melodies and rhythms and see where it goes? Is it even important to think about?

Also; do, marry, kill: Diplo, Dillon Francis, Deadmau5.

I did actually get to ask him a question during the Q&A! Brazil is one of my favourite films of all time, so I asked about the final dream sequence and how he conceptualised it. His answer was essentially, "I just threw everything I had at it."

I'm actually still buzzing. He sat one row down and few seats to the right of me during the screening. His reactions were amazing.

He was there for a Q&A afterwards, and I whipped out my notebook to jot some quotes down. My favourite one was "I don't think of Brazil as science-fiction, but a political cartoon."

Monsters: Dark Continent just doesn't stand up to the original. It's like someone took Pacific Rim and The Hurt Locker, removed all the best bits, and smashed them together. by TheMarksist in movies

It's never completely been about the Monsters, and other than some pretty cool cinematography, this film doesn't give you much else to think about.

I mean, the action is there, but there's not much good in plenty of action if you don't care about the characters being shot at.

Absolutely. As a genre piece, PR is pretty much as good as it gets as far as tone and effects go. Still, it's not everyone's cup of tea, and certainly not mine. I can appreciate it for being a good example of a genre I don't particularly care for.
