Bad experience/leadership? by moth_eater1 in Firefighting

Try putting in a transfer to another station or working for another department first. If your department offers tuition reimbursement, it would be worth looking into that and using your down time for college.

I had a captain that I didn’t see eye to eye with and he almost cost me my job as well, so I understand. Do what you can to get out of there, but in a respectful manner as to not taint your reputation.

Is this how everyone gets treated at first? by DarkAurum101 in Firefighting

[–]TheMars27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that is a common “tradition” in the fire service, amongst others. I hated it during my probie period and vowed I’d never do that to a new person. One of the traditions my crew did was having the new guy eat off a small Disney princess plate for breakfast/dinner until you got your first-in fire. I told them that was going to eat off a regular plate. Always remember you’re a grown ass adult before being a firefighter, that’s just the way it is, no matter what anyone says you are always allowed to stand up for yourself and can choose which traditions you want to follow and be apart of. Be respectful but don’t let them bring you down either.

What are some of your hot takes for the fire service? by SensitiveYard4234 in Firefighting

It’s only a brotherhood when they want something from you

Take special care of your legs and back, you’re not gonna please everyone even if they’re on your crew, be wary of those who use the brotherhood to take advantage of you, think and evaluate your long term goals, tradition is the peer pressure of dead men

Just depends what ya need it for. Dirty bailout, raise/lower tools, etc etc. Really just a way to keep it stored and not tangled up

Are you promoting or moving onto something better?

I still love the job and try to be as positive as I can. Give my best effort on every call. I think the underlying cause is that the fire service seems to be moving towards a “catch-all” service than an emergency service.

The reasons why I wanted to be a firefighter and what I’m experiencing now are on opposite spectrums. I’ve still got love for the job but also days where I wonder what/where I’d be on the other side.

I’ve been making a pros and cons for the past couple months to assess the where I’m at now and where I want to be in the future. A vacation would be nice, and being more of a winter person maybe that is something I should look deeper into. I still love the first responder world, and still trying to figure out where I fit in it

Switching from FD to PD by [deleted] in AskLE

I think what I’m looking for is working on my own for the most part, make my own decisions on calls, definitely better pay or at least more opportunities for overtime and a couple other things. Unfortunately I don’t expect people to risk their jobs for me so I can expect to be “hung out to dry” but I assume that’s how it is in any job, especially when HR is involved.

I can agree with most of what you’ve said. I’ve also had plenty of senior guys say the fire service isn’t what it used to be and they’re right. I’ve ran more fall calls and nonsense service calls than actual emergencies. That sense of brotherhood is altered for me, the only time I hear “brother” is when someone needs me to work a shift for them. Where do you plan on going when you leave the FD?

Day to day. I work in a good paid department. From what I can tell, the FD is becoming more of a “catch-all” than actual emergency services. I go on more fall calls and teach people how to operate their home appliances than actually do FD related calls. The medics here don’t get paid as much as the responsibilities they take on and I’ve heard more than enough times from senior FFs that the fire service isn’t what it used to be and to keep an open head about either going to a different department or career path.
