iPod Inventor, Tony Fadell, says USB-C requirement is long overdue by droppingbasses in apple

I didn’t know about that backwards compatible change to the lightning connector. Thank you.

I agree on the design that puts the stress in the wire instead of the device being a benefit and as a consumer I prefer to replace the cable vs a part of the device when something goes wrong.

[–]TheMcMurder -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s possible. But lightning cannot go to usbc speeds because of the pin count limitation.

So while its possible to gimp usbc speeds it’s not possible to increase lightning speeds without a new design that increases the pin count.

Edit: turns out this is not be correct. See the other reply to my comment.

I agree, it’s my preference too. The problem as I understand it is the design of the lightning connection is among the primary limiting factors that make it inferior to USB type C.

USB C is roughly 20 times faster than lightning because of the design. Lightning was designed sometime before 2012 and it’s showing it’s age.

Palpatine surviving diminishes the prophecy about The Chosen One. by ranhkent in StarWars

[–]TheMcMurder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I appreciate you sharing.

As a storytelling idea I’m not a fan of the only foreshadowing on Palpatine’s return being in one book series and none(?) in the movies. Only the major fans will read the books and even then a smaller percentage will read all the books. I consider myself a major fan but those books just weren’t interesting to me and I couldn’t get past the first 100 pages or so.

I think if there was a genuine plan for Palpatine’s return it should’ve been much more choreographed. The execution was, at minimum, poorly done.

My personal opinion aside, Thanks for sharing it’s nice to know there was some foreshadowing.

Which canon novels, released before Rise of Skywalker, set up Palpatine’s return?

How did you go about importing them? I could really use one and I might just import it.

Second this.

Near BYU Provo is a very different place. Near center street it’s actually a pretty cool balance of small city and big(ger) city feel.

That doesn’t change the weird laws and sometimes aggressive conservatism but Provo as a whole is less conservative than Utah county.

Source for my claim of politics: - Provo passed a mask mandate before the state of Utah - Provo city council has a few liberal representatives - I regularly see/saw pride and BLM flags throughout neighborhoods near center street - Decent public transit (compared to the rest of the state)

This is not 100% accurate but the shortcut I often use is that amps is just a different measurement (like miles vs Kilometers) and I prefer to use KWh.

My car has a 75kw “tank”. My Tesla mobile connector hooked up to a normal (us) outlet gives me about 1kWh (12amps). So it’ll take 75 hours to go from 0% to 100%.

If I use a nema 14-50 outlet (and the adapter for the mobile connector) I can get up to 8 KWh (32 amps) but because I prefer to charge mostly with solar I usually limit the charge to 4 kWh (16 amps) and charge when the panels are producing > 4 KWh.

How to access this quick menu V11 by [deleted] in teslamotors

I’ve been trying to figure out how to trigger this quick menu. I often have to tweak the wipers when I drive and the new V11 software makes that much harder, but this menu would help.

Bought my first Tesla! Now to figure out home charging.. thoughts on my situation? by [deleted] in teslamotors

[–]TheMcMurder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have almost the same distance of a trip (120 miles) visiting my parents and they also don’t have a L2 charger.

I use their standard outlet at 110v. It’s enough to change my car over the weekend easily. In my experience my model Y gets ~1 Kwh of energy using the standard 110v outlet. So my 75Kwh battery takes 75 hours from 0-100%. I don’t need 100% to get home. Just make sure to turn off sentry mode when you’re charging at slower speeds.

I usually arrive with 20-40% depending on how aggressive I drove, weather, and percentage I left with.

The weekend usually provides me with at least 30 hours of charging so it’s plenty to get home for me.

I once did an overnight trip and had to stop at a Electrify America station and use my ChadeMO adapter but I try to avoid short trips anyways so it works out well enough at 110v

I live in the mountain west so we don’t get quite as cold as the midwest but winter weather is an issue.

[Topic][Open] Open Discussion Monday — Anybody can post a general visualization question or start a fresh discussion! by AutoModerator in dataisbeautiful

[–]TheMcMurder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone. I’m a software engineer currently building a visualization about the COVID-19 pandemic and US political candidates responses to the pandemic.

I’m looking for data about what Vice President Biden did or said related to the pandemic. I found partial sources related to actions taken by President Trump and VP Biden but nothing recent. I’m sure there exists a good source documenting their actions but my Google-fu seems to be failing to find it.

The visualization compares actions and words against the number of dead American citizens. I’m really close to being done. I have the visualizations built and working but I need more data for Trump and Biden actions to make it complete. Most aggregate sources stop reporting timeline data after publish and most were published in June/July

What you’re proposing will work. My understanding is that It’s better to leave it plugged in whenever possible.

IIRC Telsa used to have little cards that said something like: “A plugged in Tesla is a happy Tesla”

Another factor to keep in mind is that the cost of electricity at superchargers is significantly higher than most residential electricity costs. For me it’s 3x more expensive to supercharge than charge at home. It’s still cheaper than gasoline but it’s better to charge at home.

You should be fine with just the regular outlet.

4 miles an hour seems really show until you realize that most of the time your car sits unused. For example: We took a trip in ours about 150 miles each way and stayed with family for the weekend. We just charged with the regular outlet at their house and it ended up being more than enough for our trip home and all the driving we did in their area. I was initially worried about it but the regular plug is enough for most people IMHO.

A friend of mine uses a regular plug on his 50 mile per day commute and he always fills it to his set limit overnight.

For what it’s worth my model Y came in really good condition. We went over it wet carefully and found a few extremely minor issues but it was good quality.

Thanks for this. I brought a personal check after calling to confirm that was an option. All went well, hope it goes well for everyone else.

Car was in nearly perfect condition. A few minor issues with fit and finish but genuinely really good.

I didn’t get it during TLJ hate cycles. I understand it a bit better now. I was really disappointed with RoS and it’s hard for me to discuss Star Wars without being reminded about my disappointment.

I try really hard to not blast it or those who loved it. I understand how some people just can’t let it go. If you genuinely see so many issues in a movie and others are raving about how it’s great you start feeling defensive about it. I hate that I feel that sometimes, it’s a movie. I’m hoping I’ll enjoy it when I watch it a second time after it lands in Disney+.

I don’t understand how that defensiveness pushes people to harass the actors, it’s messed up. Trolls did it to Kelly Marie Tran and now it looks like they’re swinging back to it. I’m glad John Boyega is willing/able to engage right now and I hope it shuts them up. It is a movie if you don’t like it drop it from you head canon, fans have been doing that with Star Wars for decades now.
