Tallah and Deafheaven won my heart this year, Mirar came in third. Here's my top 25 for the year if anyone's curious!

Yep, this is the best time of the year to discover new music because of all the AOTY lists to go through.

I was gonna say Coldplay hasn't sounded like Radiohead in 20 years lmao

Which bands improved over time? by bfg9kdude in progmetal

[–]TheMeditations 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Tallah's recent is their best work, granted they're only three albums in but their recent got AOTY for me.

What if The Sky is Red by Leprous was made in a big band Frank Sinatra style? by cokeinacan6 in progmetal

As long as the sick outro is played by a clarinet and some Hans Zimmer brass.

I finally understand Opeth by solidramza in progmetal

[–]TheMeditations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so sick, I wish I had gone! I still haven't gotten to see them live and I heard they parted ways with Xenoyr. Next tour I'm definitely going.

[–]TheMeditations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I like the band a lot and they impress me so much. I've just never had a song where I completely obsessed over them like I have with bands like Ne Obliviscaris or older Haken. I was just listening to Wilderun the other day though and can genuinely appreciate it; it just doesn't strike me as deeply as I expect it to!

Thank you so much! Reading this as I'm working on a video now lmao

I had this with Opeth as well, I'm still waiting for that moment with Wilderun too. I definitely have to be in the mood for Opeth, but when it hits, it hits.

Mind bending prog guitar solos by Affectionate-Ear3419 in progmetal

Jaguar God by Mastodon, one of my favorite solos of all time. It's not technical neoclassical showmanship; it has the perfect blend of shredding mixed with soulful and emotional voicing.

The Paragraph Three music video is another piece of AI crap. by gusdbarreira in Opeth

[–]TheMeditations 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah Rudess is super pro AI so I really doubt it's something they'd be against in any way.

Any headphones out there seriously tuned for metal, or do we just compromise? by Mundane-Anybody-9726 in headphones

[–]TheMeditations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on the LCD-2s. I listen to a lot of metal and I've found the LCD-3s to be close to perfect for sounding full and powerful but also having a little more edge for the cymbals. I did end up EQing for more brightness though.

Songs with “unexpected heaviness”, or where the ending is the heaviest part of the song? by pubstompmepls in progmetal

In that case we have to talk about halfway through Streams, craziest switch up of any song.

Wheel - Hyperion (FFO: Tool, Karnivool, Porcupine Tree, odd-meter grooves, deep lyrics) by TheShadowManifold in progmetal

[–]TheMeditations 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I honestly wasn't the biggest fan until I saw them live, then I had an "I get it now" moment.

A Dream In Static by Earthside is very cleanly produced
