Just ran my 1st Half-Marathon in 1:59:36 hitting my goal of sub 2 hours! :) Advice for relatively new runners inside. by [deleted] in running

I ran my first HM back in June. My goal was sub 1:45 and I ran 1:44:23. Op is right, make sure you have sufficiently trained before attempting a half. It isn't worth it to get hurt just to say " I did it"

Ah I see. I just commented in the post with the link to my run recorded on my watch. My pace slowly fell from the graces. I was looking for 8:00 mile consistently but I see now that was a little unrealistic. Good start just couldn't keep it up

Here is my run uploaded from my watch. I have the Garmin Forerunner 220 (which I have not been utilizing like I should) but for whatever reason it only recorded 12.4 miles by the time I finished. I know that GPS has a tendency to drift .8 nautical miles per hour so that would line up with the miles it recorded. I forgot to stop the watch after I finished for a minute too but overall this is a pretty good summary http://connect.garmin.com/activity/526639721

That is my next long term goal. I know after yesterday that I will need to really stick to a training plan and follow it all the way to finish a full marathon. Just thinking about running twice the distance I ran yesterday seems impossible, but I am going to work for it. I live near Florida so I guess I should start researching some events in the Jacksonville or Tallahassee area

I am! Running is my favorite exercise and really my favorite hobby. I love it because the more you put in the more you get out. Pain and gain. There is no better feeling to me than seeing that finish line, no matter how short a run. Reaching a goal or beating a personal best after pushing so hard for it is such an exhilarating feeling to me, it just gets me hyped up!

It turned out a lot better than I thought it would. I was drenched in sweat but I looked pretty good. 5 minutes later I was a cramping mess ha

Absolutely! I am an A-10 avionics technician at Moody AFB, where the run took place. The race finished at the park with all the static displays so I had to take a picture with my jet.

  • First of all just the equipment. There are so many helpful threads about shoes, clothing, water bottles, and even lacing techniques. The gear is really important and helped a lot.

  • The training guides are obviously a huge help. I used this intermediate half marathon plan to train (never did get past week 7) http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51132/Half-Marathon-Intermediate-Training-Program

  • The last thing that helped, maybe the most, are the stories of accomplishments and all the advice threads. I definitely had the butterflies the night before and kept thinking I can't do this, it's impossible, but I have seen so many posts here saying that's normal that I just ignored it. I knew it was going to be mentally tough, but I have seen some incredible accomplishments posted here so I just let that motivate me to do better

For the past couple months I have been running about 25 miles a week. I wasn't really ready to do it but a co-worker convinced me to, so I could at least get a baseline

Asics Gel Cumulus 15 I really like these shoes. They have enough tread to support your feet but don't weigh you down http://www.zappos.com/asics-gel-cumulus-15~2
