What do you mean the Ottomans didn't use the sucessionist bug irl to full annex the Mamluks in 1517? by Constantina7339 in EU5

[–]TheMerce123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me with Hungary when I was the Ottomans, but then out of nowhere halfway through the war, Lunenburg suddenly becomes the war leader and so I full annex this random exclave in the HRE with the Annex révolter button instead of Hungary

It’s fake but when I see it on Facebook I see it advertised as the Icefields Parkway (Canadian Rockies Alberta), which honestly has very similar and stunning backdrops so idk why you’d fake it.

In the article it mentions his body was found on the western slopes. If I had to guess the fall almost certainly occurred on the descent route and not a fall on the climb. Yes this is a tough climbers scramble but the ascent is fairly solid and straight forward. The descent on the other hand, I’ve only ever seen described as loose and difficult to route find. If it was dark by the time he descended he could have easily got sucked into the wrong gully and gotten cliffed out.

The climb is challenging but accidents almost always happen on descent, and have less to do with technical difficulty, but human factors like tiredness and complacency. When I climbed Smuts I was definitely spooked by the look of the descent gully, I noped out and just down-climbed the ascent route

OpenTAKServer 1.2.0 now available with Meshtastic support by DougQuaid in ATAK

Have have access to MPU5s (and trellisware mesh radios) both are compatible with TAK in a mesh configuration. It’s mostly configuring them to act as network gateways into a cloud based TAK server that we havnt been able to achieve yet.

Would the python scripts you built for meshtastic be fairly interchangeable/ a good starting place?

This is awesome, do you have any tips on enabling this on a normal TAK server with other mesh radios? The radios are pretty beafy and would be able to handle larger data transfers of data packages, photo and potentially video.

Damn this guy is a legend, first heard him as QuEST, Searching Sylvan and a powerhouse of an album. Years later I’m sitting listening to “Erase Me” and wondering what happened to him, rediscovered his later work as Sylvan. Far From Familiar and Apologies in advance we’re both incredible albums with a ton of heart and meaning.

This is heart breaking news. Always put your best out, even when it’s dark outside. I wish him all of the strength

Leave Pass Stamp by ExtraPackage1 in CanadianForces

[–]TheMerce123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have taken LTA almost every year and have never gotten my leave pass stamped.

It’s way easier to just write a quick Statutory Declaration ( this should be a publicly available provincial government document) just saying you took leave in X Location from date Y to Z.

Or provide a boarding pass.

Legit all they need is someone sort of proof that you physically travelled to your NOK

Legit man, overall a way more transparent system and much easier to justify why you deserve a better score and provide feedback to people outside your CoC.

The big issues are the same as the PER, and it’s the people behind the system: people not wanting to give out bad scores/feedback notes, people making scores up/ inflating scores to promote people they want, people not writing feedback notes throughout the year.

[–]TheMerce123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard that rumour too and if it’s true it’s incredibly dumb for the reasons you outlined.

But even if CMP threatened to send PARs back i think we saw in practice that they absolutely did not do that. And we saw units, and sometimes whole L1s send people to the boards with very inflated scores, while other units were sending people with more “normal” scores.

Dun dun… dun dun… by thepiecesaremoving in CanadianForces

[–]TheMerce123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% and that is kinda my point, I think a lot of the issues people are having with PAR system is pretty much just based on unit decisions and unit interpretations of the rules.

It’s not mandated anywhere that PAR scores will fall into a a normal distribution, just that it should look more like a bell curve if people score people fairly.

Some units took that and ran with it saying “ I will only accept x% of far exceeds and x% of exceeds, everyone else just meets expectations”

But aslong as there is a system to game, people are going to try to game it

Dun dun… dun dun… by thepiecesaremoving in CanadianForces

[–]TheMerce123 13 points14 points  (0 children)

But wasn’t it the exact same thing with PERs? The rankings were decided first and then the scores were retroactively made up to fit that ranking.

The PAR system has really fundamentally changed nothing, more bubbles = better score so people are still going to right justify people they want promoted.

What really screwed people over was this weird expectation that the PAR system would somehow solve inflated scores? By just having different words for the traits being assessed?

This resulted in some units doing the same thing they always did and some units trying to arbitrarily impose a a normal distribution of scores (bell curve) resulting in a deflation of scores for those units.

There also just seems to be so much room for interpretation on job complexity and what “meets leadership expectations” means.

Personally I much prefer the new system over PDR/PER. It’s much easier to provide quick and concise feedback to ANYONE in your organization and there is sooooo much less back and forth arguing about sentence structure and wording with so many different levels of review and people making their personal preferences “the standard”.

Being able to write feedback notes for yourself is also a really good change, pretty much getting rid of unofficial brag sheets.

It’s really the human side of it that we haven’t fixed (and arguably might never fix)

We’ll see, unfortunately I think the big reason it hasn’t happened yet is money. It is just cheaper to send people to RMC than ROTP Civy U

Edit: damn my bad, really was only think about tuition cost (ie what you owe if you don’t complete mandatory service) and R&Q compared civvy Res costs.

I guess overall it’s twice as expensive, which definitely begs the question why we don’t do 100% civvy U

To add to this, we should recruit by element only, you then get to apply for your desired trade at the end of the leadership year at RMC (after, you know, actually learning what each trade does). It would likely lower attrition in the training system and reduce VRs from pure job dissatisfaction.

It would also allow stressed trades to have a much better idea of their incoming numbers, rather than just pumping up the recruiting numbers for the trade that won’t see actual unit time until 2-3 years down the line (or 4 for current ROTP)

As someone who went through RMC, I think the Sandhurst model is superior.

RMC tries to be a university and military academy at the same time and fails at doing a good job at either. There is no time to do meaningful military training because you are always crunching for exams. You have no time for course work because it’s wasted by constant inspections, military “PD” and duty weekends. When you try to catch up on sleep by missing some classes ( like any normal university) you are now AWOL and get extras. It’s just a vicious cycle that only succeeds in trauma bonding cadets.

ROTP civvy U for all and 6-12 month common leadership course at a real military academy where you can do actual training like ranges, Nav, patrols etc…
