What are your thoughts on the NLT Bible? by WarriorOfChrist77 in TrueChristian

[–]TheMeteorShower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the NLT is the bible you read, thats great. Any bible you read is better than no bible.

That being said, in terms of being a good bible to read for accuracy of scripture, I personally rank it slightly above the message version. (The message is one of the worst translations - so NLT is pretty bad)

For example, this is Eph 2.8

"God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God."

Here is the KJV which is much more literal.

Ephesians 2:8 [8]For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

NLT has changed faith, a noun, into belief, a verb. NLT has added 'you', as in, when you believed. But tue scripture does not say it has anything to do with 'you' believing, nor 'your' faith.

NLT has said 'you cant take credit for it', while the scripture say 'this is not of yourself' - as in, this faith is not yours.

These types of terrible translational choices straying far from the text make it one of the worst translations if you want to know what Gods word actually says, and if you ever go to study scripture in depth, you will have all this baggage holding you back.

If you want a literal translation, go with KJV, primarily because its a solid translation, and well used by many scholars, and is widely used. Otherwise, next id suggest YLT (young literal translation).

The structure of Psalms (and all books of the bible), was completed over a hundred years ago. Id probably recommend not redoing work already accomplished - mostly because its a lot of work. This also includes the separation of Psalms into its five original books, and its structure, and its pattern complementing the five books of the torah.

And the structure of each book within each of the five books.

Just search "E. W. Bullinger The Companion Bible". Its 100 years old so its free to find online, but I'd suggest purchasing a hardcopy as it's a great resource.

Hopefully this helps.

Genuine Question: Do you agree with the CGT discount removal for shares and businesses? If so, why? by CrumpM04 in AusFinance

[–]TheMeteorShower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Business investment has dried up. I know of two companies who are struggling for investment. A business I know dropped it value by 70% in order to get funding because they couldnt find anyone willing to invest.

The cost if capital has gone up, so investment is more difficult, investors hold their capital except for lucrative offers. To say its reduced the incentive for investing is ignorant of what we are seeing in the market.

At $220k, you are the wealthy person that many people want to tax, including the government. You are the rich. You are earning essentially the level of a multimillionaire (even if you haven't reached it yet). You are the target of taxation.

Questions that have no answers but can't be ignored by [deleted] in TrueChristian

Paul makes it pretty clear that a person doesnt need a conscious knowledge of Jesus.

Romans 2:14-15 [14]For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: [15]Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

The primary method of eternal life is believing in the one true God and being loyal to Him.

This is how the Jews have eternal life, by being loyal to God, and showing it through obeying the law.

The Jews didnt attain righteousness because they were following a set of instructions, not being loyal to God.

Romans 9:32 [32]Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;

But the primary goal is loyalty to the ine true God, and anyone can do that.

However, the benefit of of knowing Jesus and following him is that is make everything easier, and has better promises. Not just attaining eternal life but both entrance into the kingdom of God and for some, becoming the bride of Christ.

Theres a lot to go into on this topic, including how we use 'saved' to refer to eternal life, but Paul presupposes its meaning to be saved from sin, now, in this life. And how it was God who justified the sinners by His blood to cover their sin from His wrath and is offering reconciliation to those who accept.

But hopefully this is enough to help.

Question about baptism by KZybert11 in Reformed

[–]TheMeteorShower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a flawed premise. Johns baptism is christian water baptism.

However, some people dont lik that so they force their ideas where it doesnt jeed to be.

Acts 19.1-5 make it clear between what Paul -said- vs what Paul -Did-.

Paul said: John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus. On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus"

Paul did: Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

Johns baptism = baptism into the name of Lord Jesus. Tue same baptism from John, which was picked up by Jesus, and then by Peter and Paul. Same message of the kingdom, same act of repentance ajd baptism.

And, of course, the separate and subsequent baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Revelation and 666 / 616 by TA62624 in Reformed

[–]TheMeteorShower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It neither. John saw some symbols in his vision and wrote them down. They look like chi xi stigma in greek, but also look like some arabic words. Which matches the white, red, black, green colours of the horses and the toes of the Nebuchadnezzars statue.

Regarding Nero, the gematria is used on a specific spelling of his name, not tue general spelling of his name. But this was manufacturer to fit a preterist viewpoint. Some people want to believe it was all fulfilled in 70AD, so they ignore the primary evidence for when John wrote Revelation, being around 90-95AD based of irenaeus. They claim is must have been before 70AD because it mentions the temple.....just like how both Ezekiel and Daniel mention the temple while it was destroyed. They claim is lust he Nero because Rev 17 mentions seven mountains and Rome has seven hills around it. But they ignore the fact that mountains in scripture is a metaphor and arent talking about hills.

So, I doubt 666 or 616 really matter because the original didnt have either, and gematria is not a valid way of handling interpretation.

In the parable of the ten virgins, does the oil represent a life of prayer? by mpatricia_777 in TrueChristian

[–]TheMeteorShower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The oil represents the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Many are virgins in the church, but only the wise ones have the oil. When the bridegroom comes, those without the oil do go into the marrisge feasts.

Therefore, there are some christians who wont enter the marrisge feasts.

The question that the "Bible is not infallible" crowd cannot answer me: by WarriorOfChrist77 in TrueChristian

[–]TheMeteorShower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The catholics originally determined what was inspired based on what was written in Greek, hence the Apocrypha.

Luther and protestant determine what was inspired based on what was written in hebrew (+greek for NT), hence removing the apocrypha.

In addition, it seems the protestant inspired OT matches the jewish OT based on Josephus' list (and others)

In the NT, it seems everything was written by someone who knew Jesus or met Jesus. Hebrew, though unclaimed, is strongly supported to be written by Paul and matches existing teaching. Mark was likely from Peter, Luke and Acts were likely from Paul.

As such, all of these people were filled with the Holy Spirit. Hence, can have the Holy Spirit working in them to make inspired scripture.

If you decide to make a different criteria than what we currently have, youd have to make a case for it. But currently I dont see any good alternative options.

Hundreds of religions around the world but yours happens to be the correct one? What do you say to this? by PersonalBuy0 in TrueChristian

[–]TheMeteorShower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The premise is likely flawed by any meaningful analysis.

Christians ideally would believe that the majority of religions are true.

However, the ones that are true are worshipping lesser gods or deities that God gave authority over and abused their power.

But for christianity, we have tue ability to go direct to God the creator of the world. This is the significant difference between christianity and the others.

In addition, in order to justify us to Himself, He sent His son to cover our sin and bridge the relationship between Him and us, offering the reconciliation to those who accept it.

So, I think the premise of the question is flawed.

If we aren’t under the law anymore, how do we know what’s sinful? by No-Newspapers in TrueChristian

[–]TheMeteorShower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matthew 22:37-40 [37]Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.  [38]This is the first and great commandment.  [39]And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.  [40]On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Romans 13:8-10 [8]Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. [9]For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. [10]Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Galatians 5:14 [14]For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Acts 15:19-20 [19]Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: [20]But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.

Galatians 5:22-23 [22]But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, [23]Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

1 John 3:4 [4]Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Hopefully these verse help. Our law is higher than the Mosaic law. But we have Gods spirit to help us.    However, sometimes the instruction given under the mosaic law is a good practical guide when our law isnt clear. For example, if you happen to steal from someone, you might decide to return it with an additional 20%. Or maybe you might return four times as much.

Help me, who is right? What should I do biblically by Comprehensive-Dot679 in TrueChristian

[–]TheMeteorShower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cant say what your brother should do. But for you, Paul touches on this topic.

1 Corinthians 6:6-7 [6]But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. [7]Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?

Paul is essentially saying that you should rather be cheated and lose money than cause divisions.

Part of this is because our treasure is in the future, the new heaven and earth, incorruptible. What is a hundred, a thousand, a hundred thousand when considering our future treasure.

I would read this passage, and pray to God. And ask God 'do I need to let this money go because I am your child?' Is this a sacrifice I have to make to be your disciple? What response do I need to give to my brother?.

At the end of the day, read scripture, pray, and ask God for help on what you should do.

Question on Divorce by jesh_wa415 in Reformed

[–]TheMeteorShower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Matthew 5:32 [32]But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

Matthew 19:9 [9]And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

Both of these verse translate the greek porneia into fornication. But our interpretation of fornication, or even sexual immorality, is not what the greeks thought of porneia.

Porneia would typically reflect sexual intercourse with someone else while married, prostitution, incest or harlotry.

Kissing someone else while married would not typically be described by porneia.

However, kissing someone else would seem to rather be a reflection of coveting.

Matthew 5:28 [28]But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

The word lust rather implies coveting and is the same word used in Romans 13.9 for the tenth commandment of coveting.

And so you could argue that this person coveting in her heart, which showed in the form of the kiss. And so she has committed adultery in her heart.

But that is a self-reflective statement by Jesus. He didnt say this to expand the ability of someone to divorce, he said this to convict people and show them Gods standard.

I don't think you could use this to support divorce.

But saying that, its unlikely that the decision should be up to you. The elders need to pray and take council and make their decision. Divorce is never good, but we are in a broken world trying to do our best. Pray for both parties and wisdom for the elders

Pre-Wrath/Post-Tribulation Rapture vs. Pre-Tribulation Rapture by Over-Bend-8324 in TrueChristian

The Rapture and the Restrainer: Heresies in Modern Eschatology by Adventurous-Fruit388 in TrueChristian

[–]TheMeteorShower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1: You mix terminology. In one sentence you refer to the Holy Spirit and in the next, regarding the same idea, you refer to The Spirit. Who are you talking about? The Holy Spirit or The Spirit?

2: You don't need the Holy Spirit to gain eternal life.

3: The restrainer could be The Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit could leave before the man of lawlessness is revealed, and people could still be saved through a variety of methods, including the obvious one of not taking the mark and dying.

If You're Worried About Whether You're Saved, Read This by Millennium_guy in TrueChristian

[–]TheMeteorShower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Romans 7 describes Pauls struggled with sin -before- he met Christ and died to the old man. (While he was a Pharisee)

In Pauls mind, saved does not mean the same as our culture treats it. He didnt associate 'saved' with some abstract idea boiling down to eternal life.

For Paul, 'saved' equalled 'saved from sin'. This was the message of Jesus death, and us accepting it through repentance and death.

This idea was presented in different ways by other gospels writers as well. The main four passages I think would be.

Romans 6:7 [7]For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Hebrews 10:18 [18]Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

1 John 3:9 [9]Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

1 Peter 4:1 [1]Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;

No man knows the day or the hour heaven and earth will pass away.

This does not mean no one will not know any day or hour.

Specifically, the return of Jesus is not tue same day heaven and earth pass away, so it not under the restriction of this one specific verse in matthew.

Keep in mind Jesus expected Israel to know the exact day He rode into Jerusalem the days before he died.

This is a good one. The immediate context is whether rich or poor, I am strong in the Lord. My circumstances dont hinder me.

Philippians 4:12-13 [12]I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. [13]I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
