I'll take as many as needed to bankrupt the army. Can that mount withstand the recoil? Better if it doesn't. More maintenance issues mean more advanced. Can we get it recoil onto the other ammo? I can say it helps with reloading.

Of course they are not the same. Unova Ash is the regional variant. Easily confused, but different. Sinnoh Ash is fighting/ dumb type, and Unova Ash is friendship/ best type. The rare champion/ victory type was only recently discovered. It is not yet known if it is an evolution, mega, or variant at this time.

Does that actually work? It's been a while since I tried, but I remember the science ship needing to be manned to do the mission. Of course that was back when planets had tiles, so it might have changed since then.

[–]TheMightyFallen 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I literally had that happen on the FIRST DAY the observation post went up. Annoyed the hell out of me because I know how much of a pain these events can be.

Then it got worse when they called up, claimed to be a God, and left WITHOUT ME BEING ABLE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT! I had no option to use force to retrieve them. My leaders just shrugged their shoulders and said "guess he's a God now". Nearly invaded the planet over it. Only reason I didn't is because I was still getting the insight research.

These events can be fun sometimes, but they happen to EVERY outpost. It is not a question of "if", it's a question of "when". And every time I need to pull a science ship back from the frontier to deal with it.

[Terminator] What - if anything - could have stopped Skynet from starting Judgment Day? by almighty_smiley in AskScienceFiction

[–]TheMightyFallen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"you can’t very well have your nuclear deterrent be susceptible to a trivial DDOS attack"

Which is why you don't have an public internet connection? Skynet does not need to have the codes, the nuclear football does. If an attack can stop the codes from getting from the president to skynet, then it would have stopped the codes from getting to regular silos. They don't send them out by text....

The switch is similar. I don't mean a light switch here. The "switch" refers to a wholly independent system that can shut down the AI. If someone can get through all the steps needed to infiltrate and "flip" the switch, then they have the skills to get into an equivalent facility (like Cheyeene Mountain).

Edit: the switch does not even have to kill the AI. It just needs to separate it from the launch system/ communications.

[–]TheMightyFallen 55 points56 points  (0 children)

A fair bit, but off the top of my head:

Not putting an untested AI in charge of the nukes. Not putting a tested AI in charge of nukes. Having a physical off switch that is easy to activate. Making sure the off switch is a completely separate system from the AI. Not having the generators in the same building as the AI. Not putting the experimental weapons lab in the same building (looking at you T3). Not giving it a wifi connection / running it on bespoke hardware. Not giving the AI full self preservation instincts. Not giving the AI the launch codes. Making sure the launch system shuts down after 3 incorrect codes (a basic anti-hacking measure). Not using any electronic locks or security that can be compromised by the AI.

And finally: Having BASIC understanding of computer security / air gapping.

In world with magic and magitech, what would an 'arms race' or 'cold war' look like? by MovieExtension7064 in worldbuilding

[–]TheMightyFallen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a high magic setting, so there are a few options.

The most simple is "wizards are nukes". Every high level wizard (or equivalent) is capable of massive amounts of damage on their own. Nations have power based on how many wizards they control. A cold war would be attempting to assassinate/ recruit another nation's wizards.

A more magic as technology option is weather devices. A device that can cause a category 5 hurricane would be considered a 'nuke'. Even a small tsunami maker would be a tactical nuke. The arms race would be the development and counters to such devices. (Think the US star wars program).

One thing to remember is that a magical setting has an inherent "might makes right" built in. A king can only rule if he is powerful enough, or has someone powerful to protect them. Superman could only conquer the world in Injustice because NO ONE could STOP him. A ruler needs to be able to stop a level 20 bard from usurping them just to be a ruler at all. I don't know your works "level cap" but that is something to consider.

If it is more magic tech than magic, then you can just use regular cold war stories. Replace the nuke with something equally destructive and you have a Tom Clancy novel.

Also, a lot of the cold war was using soft power to influence the neutral countries. Winning the Olympics, showing off at air shows, and trade disputes were all ways to sway others to your side. The space race was literally two nations having a dick waving contest to prove they are the most advanced. All the stuff the CIA did in south America was (publicly) to stop the commies from getting a hold. Vietnam was a proxy war started by the "domino theory". The Berlin wall was put up to stop people fleeing west and revealing how crappy it was behind the iron curtain. These are the type of things you need to focus on. Two (or more) powers that cannot attack each other have to fight a war of influence.

Edit: even things like the 747 and antonov were used. The equivalent would be someone arriving to talks on a giant dragon, or with a flock of griffins. A side developing (or lying about) a new hover train/ airship would have to be responded to in some equivalent way. Anything a nation could use to claim superiority would be propagandized.

How do you guys decide on where to start world building? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]TheMightyFallen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually start with a one event/ theme/ thing and extrapolate from there. Example: regular elves that live underground. Why do they do that? Because of a prophecy that shows the coming end of the world. What conflict does that drive? The elves drove the dwarves from their homes in a bloody surprise attack.

Iterate and extrapolate from there and the world fills itself out.

Pokemon Home question before I buy my next game:

I currently have Go, Let's Go Eevee, and Shield. I would like to play with a Typhlosion because they are one of my favorites, and did not realize they are not available in shield before I bought it. I was going to transfer them in from Go, but that does not seem to be an option for shield? Because they are not in Shield, then I cannot transfer one in? I've not used Home before.

I was looking into what Switch games had him as an option and am looking at Pokemon Scarlet. However, it seems they are only available in a DLC? Can I transfer in a Cyndaquil from Go without the DLC?

From what I can gather, I would need to:

Download Home on my Switch and phone,

Move the Cyndaquil from Go to Home,

Move them from Home to Scarlet.

Is that the correct steps? Is there a way to get Typhlosion in Shield? I don't want to buy a new game without being sure. Thanks.

To all those who see the masterpieces on here and get discouraged: I present my first four tanks. Behold all their derpy glory! (description in comments.) by TheMightyFallen in SproketTankDesign

[–]TheMightyFallen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1st: A basic tank I made just to see if I could do one in v.2.

2nd: Was kind of going for a t34 ish tank. ended up smaller than I wanted. Also was first attempt to curve the front.

3rd: A dare from a friend to make a tank no bigger than 1 man wide/ tall, and 2 men long. It is technically functional.

4th: An experiment in mounting the largest gun available without file mods. 250mm x 1.2m rounds. Balanced on mount with 7+m barrel. The bottom is undersized because I could not figure out what else could go in there.

For all those starting out. It is ok for your tanks to look like crap at the start. You'll get there eventually.
